Understanding Self-Concept

[Music] understanding the self chapter one introduction in many religions and uh in in many cultures across the world man has been the subject of many topics and issues in the christian perspective we read in psalm 8 verse 4 what is man that thou art mindful it's basically the psalmist asking god uh why why the attention right why the intricate detail of creation was created solely for the purpose not solely for the purpose but the whole process of creation was was in parallel with the notion that man will be living there and he will live in it and he will prosper in in the in the creation that god has created so we have the question of why man because the idea of man the idea here is man is so is not man is not the perfect creature given that he has so many flaws and yet in the biblical perspective we have we have man as the measure of all things rather god is the measure of all things and man was created no almost in the center of that of that whole process of creation almost and then uh in here's a greek philosopher there are many strange and wonderful things but nothing more strangely wonderful than man as dark as it may seem man is also the center or the center of the subject on on one of the most amazing amazing beings amazing created beings even our brain right if you look into the the study of the brain you can see that uh yes we could say that we are we could say no we could i'm not saying it's true but we could say we are animals but then again it's more than that we are more than animals with the idea of the free will with the idea of rationality uh with the idea of integrated processing anyway so that's that's the introduction so let's jump into the into the point so understanding yourself would be a subject which leads to the topic of sub-concept now so in this subject we will be talking about understanding the self understanding one's self but take note that take note that you cannot understand you cannot put it you cannot put it in a container or in a contained time and space the process of understanding one's self it could take a lifetime it could take what it could take you years and years before you understand yourself because you're you're you're constantly you're constantly [Music] changing from one form to another that's why you're you're you're called a human being the word being there implies that there's always the idea of continuity of the idea of folding and unfolding you know within ourselves so that no but to settle to the point now we'll be talking about the self-concept it differs to the composite ideas feelings and attitudes people have about themselves now this would be your self-concept this would be the idea that you have about you kinsaka who are you in terms of the personal and who are you in terms of the interpersonal that self-concept is also defined as the sum of a complex organized and dynamic system of learned beliefs attitudes and opinions that each person holds to be true about his or her personal existence so mid-june during a part wherein it's the sum of the complex organized dynamic system of learned beliefs attitudes and opinions no so in the first definition we have the composite ideas feelings so it's most likely the internal processes while in the second definition we have the sum of complex organized and dynamic system of learned beliefs so it's most likely behavior yes and it's and it's both true we're in uh the the internal and the interpersonal the intrapersonal concept and will will echo itself outward so inanna so for example the composite ideas and feelings that you have will eventually find its way outside in the form of behavior like an example would be if a person has a negative self concept if the way you treat yourself rather the way you [Music] the way you see yourself is that it's leaning towards the negative light most likely the the behavior that you express outward would also be would also be negative so most likely that no we couldn't regard self-concept as our attempt to explain ourselves to ourselves no because in this sense no we have to we have to explain ourselves to ourselves we can't just have it unexplained because the idea is we are so complex that we have to explain it to ourselves so that [Music] it would enlighten us more so that enlightenment comes because if we don't explain ourselves towards ourselves what happens is that we'll just be we would just act like animals well at the idea we won't have any idea on why we do the things that we do why we think that way or why do we feel the way we do and so on and so forth right so uh to be the scheme mattered by in in prij's term now to be the scheme that organizes our impressions feelings and attitudes and about ourselves so that's the idea we we explain ourselves to ourselves so that we could build a scheme we could build a what a a blueprint we could build a plan to organize all of these complex emotions all of these complex [Music] cognitions and behaviors you know manifest satura by ourselves so that so that we could the idea here is we could be better that's the whole thing right we have to understand ourselves and we have to explain it to ourselves so that we could become better and that's the bottom line because if you want to understand yourself and for the sake long enough for the sake just for the sake of nothing no voila no nothing good will come out of it but again we have to understand ourselves so that we could we could generate meaning out of this why do i feel this way and in the moment that you that you arrived to the answer we have the next stage how do i become better [Music] okay and so if we arrive to the answers to those questions then and only then we can take the next big step of what of becoming better we just don't say in aniko deal with it no we can't have that why because it hurts being like you okay nobody likes themselves especially if you if you look deep inside you look down objectively deep inside just like your previous activity looking objectively towards yourself you won't like what you see [Music] we can explain that later so that self concept is here's another definition that self concept now is learned organized and also dynamic sub concept is learned in a sense that we are not born with it which is uh the definition itself that is partly true it's just partly true because we have this this innate characteristics now so mubarak naputan is a discussion on nature versus nurture for the sake of arguments you define uh you're not born with it self-concept is gradually shaped and reshaped by people who influence us so that by this definition we have the self as learned no essentially a person's picture is learned no it depends on the description provided by the parents family peers and teachers so basically this agency you know these agencies help provide the whole picture the whole the whole blueprint for how you for how you see yourself how you picture yourself to be you know because let's take it at some point in our lives during saturn childhood we are we're very malleable right so that and so the the the picture that we have to ourselves the learned self is actually uh dependent on the on these social agencies especially the family okay later nano peers and teachers however it may not necessarily be a correct one that's one thing because as you grow up you also learn some parts of yourself right and so that and so how the person experienced the the whole environment and how he or she processes this environment so it when you become mature it all boils down to you to learn how to be yourself and and you learn this by what by constantly shedding and unshedding parts of you also you learn first is that you learn so it's a it's a very it's a very hazing uh draft you know what once you're a child and this the family the peers the teachers they help you form your your initial perception of yourself what happens is that this initial uh picture of what you have with yourself is basically uh flawed it's imperfect or at some point it's incorrect and so when you become an adult you learn how to be yourself in the most with them the most proper juan or in the most comfortable version of you so inanna so it's all about the versions no anyway so that so it's all about how you process this these things uh the events that happened to your life you know it's not that it has a full controller of you or it it dictates your definition of yourself it's how you process these things you know so it might happen that you have a very hard or very difficult childhood the idea is it does not define you if you had a dramatic incident for example the whole experience does not define who you are but it has it has a detail but in how you process these things inside of your head and then the idea here is you process this experience and then it brings forth another version or it brings forth a different version of yourself a better one to go to hopefully no the next is self as organized subconcept is generally characterized by orderliness and harmony so the self must be consistent you know so that it can create a it can generate a crystallized personality okay you can't have a subconcept nah chaotic why because you cannot you can't maintain people you cannot maintain relationships with orderliness and harmony okay the idea behind this view is that if it were not organized and changed readily we would not have individuality we would lack consistency and we would lack a dependable personality what do you mean by this people you maintain relationships at some to some degree by your personality by your individuality people are drawn to you because of your of because of your individuality now take that individuality and uh change it every day for example so haron in anikanga type of person and then the next line up what you would have a you would have a very chaotic order of personality wherein or individuality were in you can't you can't maintain proper relationships with other people and that would hurt the self the self as dynamic now in the in the healthy personality there is a constant assimilation of new ideas and expulsion of all the ideas throughout life which makes it dynamic so it's a constant shedding and unshedding just like the just like the mythological creature in a phoenix right so once any phoenix if no it's [Music] harry potter and many other movies no the phoenix is a bird no it's a mythical bird so [Music] no and then if my burn out comes from the ashes a new egg and then here comes another life from the ashes so in this concept as the self as dynamic we have the idea that we are like a phoenix we are constantly shedding and unshedding parts of us so that we could become better now in the in this idea we are like the phoenix because we have to we have to burn a part of us so that we could be reborn again in a newer version better now you must be willing to burn a part of yourself a part of you a part of you that's dragging you down a part of you that's bhutanta that's being toxic no it's a part of you that has become a poison it ha you have to voluntarily know burn it so that at the end of the day when the phoenix burns out a new life comes out of it it's a new life already okay if you know what i mean if tapulanka is a high school in yao yawankasa high school and negative imong perspective when you were in when you were in your senior year then here comes the the point wherein you enter college and you have to be what you have to achieve your dreams because there's no other alternative no that's the idea put no why do you do why do you go to college because there is no other alternative you have an obligation to yourself an obligation to what to achieve your dreams and so how do you become the person that you want to be actually in cliche [Music] activity during high school right uh five ten years from now what do i want to be but here's the thing you cannot be the person that you want to be not unless you're willing to cut off that part of you that's dragging you down with the whole process that's slowing you down so it congratula and if you want to be a nurse or if you want to be a successful in a hotel year if you want to be a successful rat tech or or an education student or whatever you want to be no so the idea here is that you must be willing to to burn that part of yourself that you don't need that in this part no in this in this journey towards that person but then again cutting classes imagine that no so you have to be willing to cut that part of you helical computers you fine but you have to willing to burn that part to move forward the idea of the self is undergoing constant changes there's always changes whether you like it or not no there will always be these changes you will you will always be compelled to move even if you say de la como ero i won't grow up i will stay here i will not grow i want things this way but life will always give you that that push whether you like it or not it will compel you to jump off the cliff because there's no other option no more for this is the idea that the self is dynamic why is it dynamic because you have to move to a step backward means death okay so there's no other way but to move forward and so you have to embrace these changes and you have to assimilate new ideas you have to open yourself to the experiences of new ideas or rather to new experiences good experiences that will help you propel towards your goal no you can't just have it no you have to undergo these changes and mind you these changes in many cases will cause pains m1 it will cause you pain it will hurt yes no because that's how it is that's the process of change the process of change will always hurt you but then again i think there's a song about this what doesn't kill you makes you stronger and so with the idea of the change within yourself is that it will actually hurt no changing yourself pushing yourself towards the change will actually hurt but then again what doesn't kill you makes you stronger no it won't kill you the the process of change no won't kill you it will cause pain sakit shah no and at some point the madawa tank changes but that's the thing you don't have any choice but to move forward to embrace the change and become better that's that's it you have no other alternative so human being the concept of being means the idea of continuum of narrative we must have a continuum of narrative we can't just have it no dilemma it's not a healthy way of being it's very pathological imagine there's no continuum of your narrative there's no continuity of narrative imagine that always starting all over again and all over again until at some point you've walked too far and you have achieved nothing in the end so that so importance of the course during college there will be drastic changes in one social circle academic load and even changes in terms of responsibilities insight into knowing oneself could help the students maneuver his way through college with more good decisions and choices so khanna the more you know yourself the more you know the more you know the ideas and the information about who you are the more you understand yourself the more ka magnisha 100 full proof but there's a bigger chance that you would be doing a better job in decision making and making making choices same kind of college the roles that we play as adults are different with that of a teenager that's true the roles that you're playing now would be more broad and it would be more complex understanding oneself can help students and adjust and cope to the roles that they play during college so we will be playing roles during college delay role playing activity roles your role as a what as a as a son as a daughter as a student as a friend and so on and so forth so you will be juggling all of these roles during college and having a having a better understanding of yourself can help you adjust and cope to the roles with the shipping roles shifting roles are the challenges in responsibilities this course can help students to become responsible individuals by granting them the knowledge and skills to handle handle their responsibilities and duties as adults so there would be changing there would be more complex roles and therefore there would be there would be more complication in terms of responsibilities so in responsibilities as an adult would be would encompass more complex tasks and it will demand more maturity say more emotionally psychologically and behaviorally of course so you have to you have to know these responsibilities and you have to know how to handle them as an adult as a child if as a child if you were given a task where in dili nimokaya you could cry in the corner of the room right and nobody will nobody will push you towards doing it because but as an adult you can't just have it you have so many responsibilities and you'll just cry at the corner or in the corner of the room no you have to face these responsibilities and do this as a mature and growing adult understanding oneself is also important for the individual for them to be able to know and discover their meaning and purpose beyond the whole of their professions self-explanatory in understanding oneself is essential for one to attain harmony with the community with others and most importantly with yourself and lastly uh let's take the coat of uh frederick nietzsche he who has a why to leave can bear almost anyhow actually it's it's connected to the first point no uh you would be the thing is when you understand when you have a full grasp or full comprehension or an almost full comprehension about yourself you know you could discover in turn the meaning and purpose of your life and in doing so mubala the meaning and purpose this would be your why you know he who has a why to live can bear almost any how and so you could bear almost any problem or any obstacle if you have a what a why if you have a meaning and a purpose you can bear almost any problem that life throws at you so though that is the first chapter of uh this subject understanding the self see you later
