Diagnostic Evaluation of Articulation and Phonology
Overview
- Two separate record forms for Articulation and Phonology.
- Color-coded system:
- Articulation: Pinkish-orangish
- Phonology: Purple
Articulation Assessment
- Age Range: 3-0 to 8-11 years
- Manual Reference: Starts on page 25
- Procedure:
- Using the stimulus book, present pictures to the child.
- Record the child's responses and note any error patterns using IPA.
- Focus on vowel errors, which are often overlooked.
- Mark errors using a legend (e.g., check for correct, R for no response, D for dialectical variation).
Scoring
- Error Counting:
- Count errors per category and column, e.g., total consonant and vowel errors.
- Articulation Error Score:
- Calculated by summing errors.
- Transcribe raw scores to scaled scores using Appendix C (page 129).
- Check for phoneme stimulability for sounds not produced correctly.
Scaled Scores and Confidence Intervals
- Appendixes available for scaling raw scores and calculating confidence intervals.
- Consider gender and age to avoid common errors.
- Example: Raw score of 14 errors for a 3-3 year old boy yields a scaled score of 9.
Additional Calculations
- Percentile ranks, age equivalents, and severity ratings can be found in the appendices.
- Articulation Severity Rating:
- Calculate the percentage of consonants, vowels, and phonemes correct.
- Useful for report writing and goal setting.
Phonology Assessment
- Skip first 14 items if articulation test was administered.
- Manual sections and scoring are similar to articulation assessment.
- Procedure:
- Follow purple-coded protocols.
- Record errors and identify phonological processes.
Scoring
- Manual Reference: Begins on page 141
- Use similar scoring process as articulation assessment:
- Raw score to scaled score conversion.
- Percentile rank and age equivalent calculations.
Final Notes
- Ensure full assessment by administering both tests together.
- Always refer to the manual for unique cases or uncertainties.
- This overview does not cover every detail of the test procedure.
