Chemistry Fundamentals and Experimental Design

Part 1 Chemistry: what products are created in chemical reactions? Chemical reactions create products such as molecules and atoms. Describe how atoms rearrange in a chemical reaction Atoms begin forming and breaking bonds with other atoms and eventually become new substances. Vocabulary: Amplify Definition atoms The tiny pieces that all matter is made up of chemical reaction A process in which atoms rearrange to form new substances model Something that helps us understand something by making it easier to see product An ending substance that is made during a chemical reaction property (chemical, physical) Something that can be observed about a substance, such as its color, smell, or boiling point. reactant A starting substance that is part of a chemical reaction rearrange To change the order or position of something. scale Th relative size of things substance Something that is made of all the same atoms or groups of atoms. Chemistry boiling Liquid into gas chemical change A new substance is formed during a chemical reaction chemical equation A representation of a chemical reaction and the atoms in a substance compound 2 or more types of atoms and it has a chemical formula dissolving Mixing a substance with a liquid to create a solution element 1 type of atom and its on the periodic table of elements freezing Liquid to solid heterogeneous mixture A type of mixture in which the individual substances arent evenly mixed and you can see the different parts homogeneous mixture A type of mixture in which the individual substances are evenly mixed and you cant see the different parts. mass A measure of amount of matter in an object matter Something that has mass and takes up space, it makes up all objects. melting Solid to liquid phase change The changing of matter physical change When matter changes form but no chemical reaction takes place and no new substances are formed thermal energy Heat Part 2: Experimental Design 4Q Strategy: What materials are readily available for conducting the experiment? How does this thing act? How can you change the set of things materials to affect the action? How can you measure or describe the response of it to the change? * Identify parts of the 4Q * Create a 4Q * Create an EDD Vocabulary: Vocabulary Term Definition constants Variables that we keep the same in order to run a valid experiment dependent variable (DV) The measured effect of the independent variable experiment A scientific test testing a hypothesis to see if the IV affected the DV independent variable (IV) Something that is hanged or manipulated in an experiment hypothesis The idea that is tested in an experiment, usually written as “If (IV) the (DV)” observation Using your senses to gather data (texture, smell, color…) repeated trials Exact same experiment done over again to insure accurancy valid How accurately an experiment measured what it intended to measure; we do experiments with only 1 IV to increase validity variable Factors that can vary or chage in an experiment
