hello dear friends welcome back to my YouTube channel Mukesh English this is Mukesh Soni in this video I have brought you a famous story famous novel of arcan RN titled the financial expert and we are going to have a discussion of the summary of the financial expert before that let's know about RK Narayan Arcane RN's full name is rasipuram Krishna Sami Ayer Narayan Swami born in 1906 in passive in 2001 he's famous for his simple and subtle narration in his literary Works along with Raja Rao and mulkraj Anand he was one of the most prominent and well-known well-known writers of aim of early Indian writing in English most of his stories were set in the fictional town of malgudi his first novel Swami and friends was published in 1935. he has written more than 40 novels short stories travelocs condensed version of Indian epics in English his best received works are the Indian the English teacher waiting for the Mahatma the guide the man eater of malgudi the vendor of sweets a tiger of malgudi and he also won many prizes many awards like scyth Academy Award AC Bendel uh AC Benson medal by Royal Society of literature he was also normally by the rajya Sabha in 1989 now as for the introduction is concerned the novel the financial expert is a novel published in 1952 it takes place in the fictitious town of malgudi the main character of this novel is here the Main Financial expert that is margaya margaya who offers advice to his fellow Town people under his position at the Banyan Tree he's a man of many aspirations and this novel delves into some level of psychological analysis the novel Financial expert tells the story of the rise and fall of margaya the main famous character as for the theme is concerned the main theme of the novel is here lust for money but margea is no monster of greed and wickedness in his depiction of margaa RK Narayan humanizes him and shows that despite his lust his lust for money he is still a human being to begin with let's begin the main character margaya is an intermediary among the members of the town's famous Bank Central Cooperative land Mortgage Bank and he he helps the people to get the he helps the people to get the loan from the bank and many banks of this kind who are established under around India in the early Decades of 20th century to encourage savings and to make loans available at reasonable rates to its uh member depositors then how we used to do Marga used to sit under a banyan tree across the street outside the bank and the bank's depositors they used to approach him for the loans and what he used to do it he used to make a wealth alone more than the capacity I mean to say more than their capacity like for example the maximum amount one can borrow depends on the size of one's account and size of one and the ones track record of the repayment of the previous loans installments so those days people used to apply for the loan for the expenditures or for any kind of Dory payment for the marriages of the daughters so what Mara used to do Mara used to make the loans Avail at higher rate of interest by charging some commission for his Services because he knows all the intricacies of the banks rules so he can easily maximize the total of his clients borrowing capacity that was the talent of margaya that was a talent of the main character margaya here then margaya gives loan at a higher interest and he keeps a record of his transactions in an account book so he used to keep his record very neatly in a one of the transaction Books Okay so that he can ensure the payment from the borrowers he also keeps a hand on he also keeps on hand a supply of the bank loan application forms also used to keep the application forms and he used to fill them for his usually illiterate clients so that and for that also used to charge for his services so that was uh marga's main work in this novel but the family house is partitioned between margaya and his his old his elder brother the two families are on throat cutting terms the brother is doing financially better same time receives another humiliation the secretary of the bank and arul Das and the peon the seize from his box the all all the loan application forms which he used to manage to get from the bank through its shareholders and they treat him with contempt and threatened to proceed against him and this kind of incident sets the path to improve his position and that humiliation he suffers from the employees of the bank and which makes him understand the limits of his frustration and anger finally he comes to the conclusion that if only he has a lot of more money more money he will get respect from the likes of the bank officer and not have to shirk from Tradesmen to whom he owes money so he would buy good material things for his wife and good education for his son so he determines that now he has to be financially more strong he has to do something and something very different so in the course of story we also find here margaya has only one child only one son Balu and he's an utterly spoiled boy is busy with his account book at home Balu interface and annoys him too much and what happens in resulting frasses Balu grabs the account book and he throws into a gutter outside the house running with dirty water and the account book gets disappeared down the drain this is a disaster for Marga because without written evidence of loans he had provided yes he and now it's it's quite very difficult for him to recover and to get the old uh to resume his old practice and to know the status of the repayment of the loan because he does not have any backup of his account book he does not have any backup so what you will learn here from this financial expert that we should have some sort of backup copies of our financial documents so now it's very difficult for margaya due to his son so Marga what is it does he wants to do something good something new and before that what does he do he goes to a local temple of Lakshmi the goddess of wealth and he has his horoscope gets examined by the priest the pujari he sees his horoscope and the pujari tells him that his Misfortune is caused by bad influence of Saturn so he should go to another Temple will with the planetary deities to propitiate Saturn with an offering of honey to it to its priest so this kind of uh kind of task is given to him and moreover he also has to perform the Puja the ritual prayers to Lakshmi for how many days for 40 days so the material needed for that include a red Red Lotus Flower and obtainable only from a remote sport remote spot outside so he has to collect all this material for his Puja so what happens in between when he wants to collect all the material for Puja on there he meets he meets Dr Paul Dr Paul who is a journalist who also claims to be a psychologist and sociologist and Dr Paul is the author of a manuscript title bad life or the another title the science of marital happiness signs of marital happiness so what happens here uh Dr pal he expects to sell one lakh copies uh year after one after one year at rupees one each so totally one lakh rupees may be collected and this one lakh Rupees is staggering for margaya who made only about 200 rupees a month in his uh we can say the the kind of business he's doing he could earn only 200 rupees so this one lakh rupees was a big dream for Marga and this is how Dr Paul convinces or influences him to sell or to come into the business of this publishing business and to do this business so that both of them can earn about 1 lakh rupees if because they have the one or they would like to sell one lakh copies one rupee for each and finally Dr Paul gives the manuscript to margaya to print and sell for only 25 rupees for only he he he tells him to print himself for only 25 rupees so this is what uh Marga is going to begin a new business with Dr pal so here next we find here Margaret goes to the printed printing shop and there he meets the Printery on a mother-in-law Mr mother Lal and madanlal reads mother-in-law reads it with Fascination he reads his book and but he he worries that he says that if it comes under the obscenity law they may put they may put us both in prison Maria repeats the assurance that Dr Paul had given him what is Assurance it's not obscene it's a work of Sociology so finally Dr pal agrees Dr sorry Madan Lal agrees to publish it with the title which imadanlal would like to change the title he says that this book's title should be domestic Harmony and he says that here the profit share will be 50 with the 50 percent of the profit share so this is how Marge has new business in the Publishing House moves on uh we can say by the blessing blessings of Lakshmi because he has done a Puja then the the book has a great commercial success and this success has brought a success in the life of Marga Marga has become a rich person and a well-regarded man in malgudi with a confident Swagger and I think we can say that here the Saturn has helped him to balance his life and Lakshmi has given all the prayers so so there is even some sort of settlement with his brother also he does some sort of settlement with his brother as well so he has started his life very happily a new life then in between what happens here Balu who is marga's son Marcus and Balu he does not do well in school he shows a very poor performance the same time What Happens Marga with his wealth he has become wealth and influence he has become the secretary of the school managing committee he has become one of the school Committee Member One of the members of the school management this has helped him armed him with more power over the Headmaster and the school staff so what he has done he has done having seen his son's balu's poor performance he has hired a private tutor for his son and he instructed him to thrash the boy whenever necessary so this is how he uh he started to show his wealth influence and he started to bring a lot of comfort zone for his child as well so now now what happens uh the business was going on but after few years Margaret gets fed up with this printing business and a little kind of ashamed of being known as a publisher of domestic Harmony he feels ashamed that he I am a publisher of this book titled domestic Harmony he also develops his theory of money and interest he starts thinking and after two days of complicated negotiations with Madan Lal where each party pretends to be doing the other a favor and secretly secretly believes himself to be getting a great bargain so what is it he thinks uh finally margaya agrees to sell his share in the book for a lump sum amount and he comes out with this he just share he just said he sells his share amount and he gets some lump sum amount from his publishing house and he comes out from this publishing business and he starts thinking some other business so what new business here now margaya uses his uh he starts his lending business right as a money lender he starts lending business he starts learning business or a kind of we can see kind of Finance he starts his own Finance Company he starts lending money at high interest rates against some dodgy Securities that no bank would touch and what does he do he seizes the assets when the borrowers cannot keep up the interest and the repayment so this kind of he has become a like we can say just like the other private finance company does he lend some money with higher interest if somebody does not it does not repay the loan amount or the full amount to the interest amount what is does he just seizes the assets which has been mortgaged so this is the new business as a money lender he has started now he again reconnects with Dr Paul he connects up again with Dr pal Dr Paul who helps him to find an office and is eventually hired to develop to help in a new line of expansion of margaya's business okay so here Dr Paul is there to to help him to attract deposits from the people who have become rich in the wartime economy by promising High interest rates so now he's he's with the help of Dr pal he thinks to expand his business he thinks to enlarge his business and to take the money from home from those rich people and to give them high interest rate so now now Mar Gaya lives a life of affluence and even develops a punch and although he remains in his old small partition house and has his life to do cleaning and cooking he's still living in his old house okay but he's his life is now settled so now here if you look at his son's performance so one day what happened his family life hits a big bump Balu flunks his high school graduation examination he fails in the 10th standard examination and here margaya's dreams of sending Balu to college and then to further studies in Europe America gets shattered he could not clear his sslc examination and he though though Margaret tries to convince him to take the Examination for the second time and the result is what Balu seizes the school living certificate book and he tears it and he tells he takes this certificate into quarters and throws those certificates copies into the gutter in the same guitar which closes its dark water or margaya's red account book and getting away the school living certificate book so he has thrown the pieces of this certificate into the same guitar where he had thrown once Margaret's account book so here Margaret has run away from home because of this incident he's run away from home and after few days there was a letter from Madras telling Marga that his son was dead rushes there but luckily on the train Marga meets a police officer who investigates and finds that the letter about balu's supposed death was sent by a rich but a very crazy man who had employed him and who sends many such letters as well as the letters to Roosevelt Stalin and Churchill and others so finally the policeman locates Balu and margaya he promises Balu that he will be given total freedom if you return to home so Marga and his wife Marge and his wife spoil um so what happens here here what happens here because Balu has got the complete Freedom Balo has got complete freedom from his from his father so Balu takes the advantage of his new found power and he devotes himself to the heart of cultivating Leisure so he starts getting indulge in some wrong activities because of the freedom given by his father margaya so now now margaya decides to arrange a marriage for Balu his wealth enables him to conceal his low-caste ancestry and attract proposals from many Rich families including the honor of her tea estate whose daughter has a necessary qualities like good looks Prospect of a large Dowry so finally what happened the TS States we can say here TS States daughter brinda and balu's horoscope was sent to match but there was a mismatch in the horoscope of both brinda and Balu but here what Margaret does here Margaret with his influence of money he he does a he rearranges the stars of Balu to meet the horoscope and finally finally Balu and um get married and Balu has been given a house and the house is here lolly lolly extension he has been he has been given a separate house and that house he Margaret had had acquired for how for losing on a mortgage as a proof of the town as a good part of the town so this is how uh balu's marriage is done and balu's life is settled now Balu is married Balu has got a new house gifted by Marga the Lolly extension so now let's see what happens in the rest of the story now now what happens here is believed to a wizard wizard means a very skilled person so marga's deposit taking business flourishes he offers 29 percent interest rate claiming that his other business earns him 25 everyone in malgudi wonders how he does it banks are puzzled they are losing deposits to him he is believed to a wizard but the fact was there he seemed to need new clients each day so what Marga calculated he says if I get 20 000 rupees deposits each day and pay 15 000 rupees in interest even though he keeps 5000 rupees left in his hand every day so the wizard The Wizardry was just a classic Ponzi scheme at the end of the each day he takes money at home and at home and he locks he keeps the money in the safe and he presumes that the money will grow so this is how he obsesses over the business so much that soon after his health gets affected now Balu Balu who is under the influence of Dr pal so then one day Balu comes to margaya's office and demands half of all that wealth as his share claiming that it grew out of his out of the ancestral property therefore he is entitled to it on attending his age of majority perhaps he was very much influenced by Dr Paul who has become a close friend of Balu and Dr Paul has introduced Balu to the world of wine women song margae was very much worried about balu's demand all evenings he used to come to home very late night okay so this is how due to the influence of Dr pal Balu gets indulged in gambling drinking cow voting with girls so this has become his frequent appearances even balu's wife Brenda she was also very much worried about it so we can say here this is all has happened due to the influence or due to the uh we can see interference of Dr pal so finally we find here margayas downfall has started now how then one day one day Maria sees Balu arriving home in a car driven by Dr Paul with two girls Marga pulls Dr Paul out of the car and beats him beats him up Beats him up very severely so what Dr Paul does Dr Paul goes to the office he lodges a complaint for assault against Marga and Dr Paul also tells talks to his friend about the incident and he asserts that he tells to everybody in the town that Marga has gone crazy so when the news gets around margas in investors start to demand the deposits back and this Ponzi scheme quickly collapses he doesn't have money to return to all the investors immediately so Marga has to declare as a bankrupt he has to declare bankruptcy the house in which he and his brother Live cannot be attached but all other assets are seized Balu and his family are thrown out of the house and Balu and his family have come back to margas old house small half house where Marga used to stay or Varga has been living so this is how marga's downfall has happened now further obviously margaya still has not lost the Hope Marge offers Balu what remains of his inheritance from ancestral property what remains this is a box in which he kept his ink pen paper to take every day to his place under the Banyan tree in front of the cooperative bank and he tells he tells Balu go there that is all I can say anything may happen thereafter but but Balu says what will people think so he he advises Balu to take his place under the Banyan tree with his old box the box which contains all the stationary to do all the accountancy work but Balu denies he thinks about the people and Marga himself goes back to his old workplace under the Banyan tree and the world has come full circle for margaya again at the new story and the new life of margaya begins here so let's analyze the story here that's analyze the novel here draws Marga as a complex character a mixture of sweetness navity intelligence and stupidity pride and humility self-confidence and timidity his depiction of the Galaxy of malgudi characters like malgudi's wife and son the bank's officer and his peon the priest the printer and a ball Dr Paul who is very much different and who is also a brilliant person then rk9 also sketches and evokes the whole atmosphere of a small City in the South India in the mid 20th century okay then we can also find here the negotiation between Marga and Dr Paul Marga and Madan Lal Morgan various borrower borrowers and depositors they are very quite amusing in the strategies and the language used by the parties and all this is set in the context of Economic and Business activities of malgudis residents making the story this book very interesting to us to all of us we are also Economist so overall we can say this story or this book should be read should be read enjoyed reread and always be remembered now
