Lecture 6: Shingling a Shed with GAF Timberline Shingles

Introduction

  • Part 6 of building a shed SL Playhouse.
  • Focus: Installing GAF Timberline architectural roofing shingles.

Materials Used

  • Starter Strip

    • Black line connects to shingles, prevents lifting.
    • Starter strips must be cut in half and placed with tar portion on the bottom.
  • Shingles

    • Shiny black strips become adhesive when exposed to sunlight.
    • Four tab shingles used for ridge cap.

Measuring and Preparing

  • Shingles' Width

    • Measure shingles: 13 1/4 inches wide.
    • Starter strip: 6 5/8 inches wide with a 1/4 inch overhang.
  • Chalk Line Setup

    • Measure from drip edge to 6 3/8 inches, mark with chalk line.
    • Use nails to hold the chalk line for precise marking.

Installation Process

  • Nailing the Starter Strip

    • Align with chalk line and nail corner to corner, then the middle.
  • Shingling

    • Start on one side, move to the opposite side.
    • Cut shingles for offset (6 inches cut for each layer).
    • Line bottom of shingle with white line on previous shingle.

Nailing Guidelines

  • Nail Placement

    • Nail above tar line to secure shingles.
    • Use shorter nails if ceiling is visible inside.
  • Tools

    • Hammer and nails recommended for small projects.
    • Nail guns available for larger jobs.

Safety and Efficiency Tips

  • Cutting and Tools

    • Use a good quality utility knife.
    • Keep extra blades handy.
  • Safety

    • Use knee pads to avoid discomfort from shingle grains.
    • Avoid working in wet or windy conditions for safety.

Completing the Roof

  • Ridge Cap Installation

    • Use four tab shingles for ridge cap; make angle cuts to prevent exposure.
    • Use chalk line for straight ridgeline installation.
    • Ensure ridge caps are securely nailed.
  • Final Steps

    • Align shingles with starter strips; ensure they’re flush for a straight finish.

Considerations for Larger Structures

  • Same principles apply as with shed for homes.
  • Be mindful of valleys in larger structures.

Alternative Roofing Materials

  • Felt Roofing
    • Alternative to shingles, used in older shed.
    • Requires adhesive application.

Conclusion

  • Importance of starter strips and proper alignment.
  • Ensure all components are secure and safe against weather conditions.
  • Video emphasizes DIY satisfaction and careful, precise work.
