hey healing journeys family my name is dr kevin chapman and i'm so thrilled and honored to be here again i've been the guest for the month of august and i'm so grateful for julianne she's been a blessing not only to all of you and the body of christ as a whole but also to me and my family personally i'm just so thankful and i counted as an honor and a privilege to be able to speak in to people who tune in to healing journeys today it's been a blessing to me this is a bi-directional relationship amen it's been encouraging to me you guys have been terrific many of you contacted me and asked questions and and just to say you've been praying for me and just to speak a word of encouragement but i'm just so grateful and you can always reach out to me if you have other questions and whatnot so thank you for that um it's just been an honor because so many people have struggled and i've watched it firsthand so many people of the body of christ have struggled so much with knowing what the word of god says knowing what it says in the word declaring the right things confessing the right things but there's always just a little tinge in the soulless ram that's like i'm missing something like there's something that's not clicking and in many ways i know there's a lot of things that could account for that but i'm grateful that i'm just trying to help people in the body to have a better understanding of things in the souls realm so they can navigate the things and activate that spirit man that they know that is inside of them that is ready to be released amen so this is just exciting for me to talk about a topic that we've discussed so many times not only just in churches but also bible studies and whatnot and other places what we know is a spirit of fear and we know what it says in second timothy 1 7 about that so what we're going to do today is i'm excited because i've been praying about it looking forward to this but part 3 and part 4 are all about action right so um what we've been if you're just now joining us what we've been talking about just to recap quickly uh week one in august we talked about just simply understanding a spirit of fear and we talked about how in genesis 3 essentially this trait known as neuroticism right this idea that because of the fall of man essentially what happened is that taking a bite of the fruit from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil unleashed a lot of things but one thing that it unleashed a lot of us um haven't really talked about is things like high trait neuroticism like this tendency to have negative emotions these predispositions right to have big feelings if you will so we talked a lot about understanding a spirit of fear and saying that there's many manifestations of a spirit of fear but we've talked a lot about what that looks like particularly in my world as a as a clinical psychologist i oftentimes see a lot of people struggle with the manifestation of a spirit of fear being manifested through anxiety right and related disorders we're going to talk about that so that's what we talked about in week one is understanding that concept this idea of the word phobos comes from that the word we get the word phobias from that when we talk about fear and kind of separating what fear and anxiety are so chronic fearfulness is how we've been defining the spirit of fear so in week two we talked about what we call understanding a spirit of fear but the essence of a spirit of fear so we talked last time last friday about well how does this manifest how do we what does it look like to see right in our natural lives what a spirit of fear is and we talked a lot about two things number one chronic anxiety just how anxiety manifests this what-ifing right this idea that i have thoughts about uncontrollability and unpredictability of future events we emphasize that anxiety is never about the present moment right but kevin i'm gonna present in a few minutes but it's still not a few minutes right it's right now right now i'm not presenting but in a few minutes i will so that's still the future despite how you tease that out the bottom line is a chronic anxiety not experiencing anxiety to prepare us sometimes for important things that could have negative consequences like failing a test but we're talking about like chronic anxiety and the word of god tells us very clearly to be anxious for nothing in other words not adopting a mindset that's dominated by chronic anxiety and then we also talked about another essence of the spirit of fear being recurrent panic attacks we emphasize that fear and panic are the exact same manifestation right so when we talk about fear we're talking about present danger when we're talking about panic we're talking about present danger but the problem with panic is that panic is what we call a false alarm fear is a true alarm so in other words when people have recurring panic attacks or a fear response we're talking about what we call a false alarm because the thing about panic that's a lie is that there's nothing that we're supposed to be afraid of in that context but we've taught our brain and our body to react right in a fearful fashion when in fact there's nothing dangerous so we talked about the essence of a spirit of fear being not only chronic anxiety but also recurring panic attacks which is basically the fear response when there is in fact no danger so now we're going to talk about we're going to use the word of god throughout this process i have a lot to share this week so this is gonna i'm so excited about it so if you take notes strap up because we're gonna use the word of god to break down some things so what we're gonna talk about today is understanding a spirit of fear part three but the title of understanding the spirit of fear part 3 is activating the new man so activating the new man because we often talk about activating the new man but we're going to talk about some practical strategies that i often extrapolate from the word of god and help people with on a regular basis let's talk about it all right so proverbs 23 7. we're going to start there and just park there for a second because what we're going to talk about as we begin with that scripture and many of you all know this scripture really well is that let's let's set the stage for a second right so when we think about activating the new man and we think about understanding a spirit of fear it is essential that we understand that all emotions not some emotions but all emotions and we said this last time have three parts this is important thoughts so what i say to myself feelings which are physical sensations in my body and behavior meaning what i do anger has three parts anxiety has three parts right fear has three parts shame guilt sadness excitement all of those emotional experiences that we have on a regular basis all have the same three parts so let's let that be our foundation as we move forward just like we're a three-part being spiritual and body interestingly enough our emotions have three parts too thoughts physical sensations or feelings and behavior so park in proverbs 23 7 because what we're going to get into is we're going to use some some scripture to talk about what that looks like and how the word of god supports that as we talk about activating the new man alright so let's get into it so chronic anxiety and the thing about it is when i have emotions like anxiety which has three parts chronic anxiety is all about using avoidant coping strategies negative coping strategies in other words i have thoughts physical feelings and behaviors and it always results in some form of negative coping right whether that be avoidance whether that be worry which we'll talk about in a minute whether that be not making eye contact see all those are subtle forms of avoidance right and we don't have a spirit of fear we know that we have power love and a sound mind in our spirit but many of us have this barrier if you will that oftentimes blocks us from manifesting what we know to be true and that causes a lot of frustration in the body of believers i know you all know what i'm talking about but we're going to break down some things today and i think some folks are going to get set free i'm so excited about it so again chronic anxiety right is always comprised of negative coping so when somebody deals with a spirit of fear there's always some avoidance of the emotion itself which ironically backfires and makes me feel worse all right so remember that so the other thing i want us to remember as we move forward as we get into the scripture is a spirit of fear is a mindset of present and future danger a mindset of present and future danger so if you understand that all emotions have three parts thoughts physical sensations and behaviors we know that chronic anxiety is a manifestation of a spirit of fear worry and whatnot and we'll talk about worry and how that's different than anxiety in a second but we also know that it involves a chronic mindset meaning my mindset is fixated on the potential of not only present threat and danger but future threat in danger alright so we're just setting the table right now because we're going to about to get into the word of god in a second and start breaking down how these are all connected so that we can talk about how do we learn how to activate the new man amen all right praise god so again chronic hangs i want to say that again chronic anxiety is comprised of negative coping right and it also involves a mindset of present and future danger so again a spirit of fear or chronic anxiety always always always contains a mindset involving present and future danger like the other shoe is going to drop at some point right so that's kind of the problem that we're talking about so let's break it down let's go to proverbs 23 7. proverbs 23 7. and as you know what it says in the word let's read it proverbs 23 7. very simple but very powerful it says as a man thinketh in his heart so is he okay as a man thinketh in his heart so is he and why that's so important is for many reasons but what for the purposes of what we're sharing in this message today is because it's so incredibly important when you think about a spirit of fear we got to establish that the things we say to ourselves right always lead especially if we declare it to a resulting behavioral response right so again if i say that i'm afraid to enter say a shopping center or to be assertive or to take up for myself or to give a speech you name it i'm just being real there's these are normal common situations that even believers struggle with amen so the key here is that if i have thoughts about but what if i screw this up that typically is going to lead to a behavioral response consistent with that right so this can be good and bad right as a man thinketh in his heart so is he i'm a winner i'm an overcomer you're gonna manifest winning and overcoming actions you with me on that so i say that to say that we have to establish that that supports what i've been saying that all emotions have three parts thoughts right physical feelings in my body what my heart's doing what my breathing is doing what my stomach is doing what my body temperature is doing right what the bible often sometimes we'll talk about in a minute about don't be terrified part of that is the physiological part which we'll talk about in luke 21 9 in a minute but then there's the behavioral piece as well right so proverbs 23 7 says as a man thinks in his heart so is he meaning he's going to be that thing because he's naturally going to engage in behaviors consistent with his thought life okay so that so again thoughts feelings behavior so important connect those two let's go to luke 21 9. so luke 21-9 just to kind of massage this a bit because we're going to get into some fun stuff today amen all right luke 21-9 here's what it says new king james but when you hear of wars and commotions do not be terrified for these things must come to pass first but the end will not come immediately again but when you hear of wars and commotions think about that that doesn't imply that there's a war or commotion right now does it it's saying when you hear meaning the potential meaning don't be anxious right philippians chapter 4 again so when you hear of rumors of wars or commotions right anything that kind of disrupts your present focused awareness your peace in that moment anything that tries to steal that from us right it's saying don't be terrified now terrified coming from terror coming from fear coming from dread also speaks to this idea that thoughts again lead to both feelings shaking distress nail-biting the things like that that i do as a result of the arousal of my body and behaviors y'all see that so again emotions having three parts thoughts right when you hear so when you're thinking about those commotions and rumors of war right and then it says don't be terrified meaning those physiological arousal don't allow like that to increase heart rate don't allow that to make your stomach distress don't allow and then that leads to behaviors of being terrified right hiding out avoiding these are all things that many of us deal with so the word of god is supporting us so again thoughts feelings behavior all right let's go to another scripture matthew chapter six one of my favorite there's a lot of meat in there matthew chapter six we're going to go down to verse 25 is what i often tell people when i'm working with them as individuals you know the worry chapter so to speak or the not worry chapter eight man so it says do not worry i love the subheadings in the word of god it says basically don't worry right so we'll talk about that so matthew chapter six we're gonna skip around a bit just because i'm trying to emphasize a very important point here so matthew chapter 6 verse 25 says therefore red letters y'all know it's jesus right therefore i say to you do not worry about your life right what you will eat or what you will drink nor about your body what you will put on is not life more than food and the body more than clothing basically what's jesus saying he's saying don't worry about the carriers of the world the things that are about sustenance what i need to put on my body what i'm going to eat where the next meal is coming from and i think in today's society you know it transcends that it transcends a whole lot of things right how we're going to pay this bill how am i going to like talk to this person what's going to happen with my son they're going to make it to school on time college is starting oh my goodness what if they don't have the data you know how it goes right we spiral so jesus is saying do not worry we're going to talk about worry in a second because people have been asking me a lot about worry verse 28 so why do you worry about clothing right and then he says consider the lilies of the field how they grow they neither toil nor spin and yet right and it goes on to talk about more other things about how beautiful they are and yet they grow and prosper and whatnot so the point is here though it's saying don't why do you worry about clothing again cares of the world thoughts related to future threatened concerns right worry right and then verse 31 same thing it says therefore do not worry saying what shall we eat or what shall we drink or what shall we wear you know andrew woman talks a little bit about this and i love what he says and i think barry bennett talks about it as well but this idea of worry being something or a thought not being owned unless you declare it think about it like you can have thoughts all day long many of us if we're honest have intrusive thoughts that go throughout our head on a day-to-day basis but we don't respond to them right but in many times though this is saying do not worry saying now this is powerful because part of the issue here is when we think about anxiety worry which again i'm going to define it a promise thoughts physical sensations or feelings same thing and behavior this is saying do not worry saying so when you speak out the things that are concerning into the atmosphere when you say the things like oh no like what if we don't make it on time that by default because our body is designed to respond to what we say to it proverbs 23 7 again so our heart rate naturally increases right our digestion naturally slows down which by the way is what a lot of people say my stomach hurts that's the same symptom as when i get excited and i have butterflies literally the same thing it's all about interpretation that's for somebody hey man your body's designed to shift your attention away from food to the threat that you just told it to pay attention to that's powerful i'm telling you listen so thoughts right that i speak out are naturally going to lead to increased arousal in my body and jaws music if you will and then behavioral responses of worry right so verse 34 and then we're going to talk about worry real quick then jesus ends by saying therefore do not worry he said i told you all this do not worry about tomorrow why for tomorrow we'll worry about its own things again being present remember we talked about that psalm 16 11 tomorrow will worry about its own things sufficient for the day is its own trouble jesus is saying look y'all i need y'all to be present but more importantly i need you to seek me first and then we won't have to worry about these things so what am i saying and let me break this down real quick because we're going to get into activating the new man in a second but people have been asking me about well isn't anxiety and worry the same i get them confused anxiety and worry are two different concepts and they're two different emotional experiences so let me explain real quick so anxiety is the precursor to worry right so anxiety is all about again the word of god talks all about it proverbs 12 25 which we you know is something we can talk about again in a minute but proverbs 12 25 talks about it right being anxious for nothing in philippians chapter four but anxiety is a future-oriented emotion right about thoughts of uncontrollability and unpredictability of future events right now what happens when people struggle with the spirit of fear is that they use whatever strategy they can to have what i call an illusion of control something that's going to make me feel better in the short term which actually backfires and makes me feel worse in a long time worry is actually in response to anxiety hence what jesus is saying here meaning when there is a concern don't use the strategy known as worry which means repetitive negative thoughts about the future that's worry repetitive negative thoughts about the future basically you do that in response to anxiety which gives some people a sense of calm when reality is making you more tense that's why sleep disruption is such a problem with so many believers that i know is because often times worries the strategy so your body's tired but your brain's still going at night and therefore you wake up and the next day you're anxious about going to sleep so you don't sleep again this is making sense so this is for somebody like we're going to talk about some strategies and whatnot but i just want to clarify worry is in response to anxiety it's a strategy that's cognitive it's in your head typically that is in response to anxiety that people do as they try to problem solve future events that are already taken care of y'all see that that's why matthew 6 is so powerful and jesus says therefore do not worry right seek you first and that therefore that activity won't happen here okay all right we'll get into that so one last scripture we're going to get into some meat and potatoes again here so proverbs 12 25 proverbs 12 25 proverbs 12 25 is one of my favorite scriptures it is it says one of my favorite scriptures and in the new king james this is so so so interesting when you see how all this is connected brothers and sisters look at this it says anxiety in the heart of man causes what depression but a good word makes it glad oh my goodness like it's so it's so incredibly interesting that that's in the word of god i mean it says that verbatim in the new king james right anxiety in the heart of man causes depression but a good word makes it glad so it tells you what what is it that causes depression right and it's interesting because in the natural even anxiety and depression co-occur at such a high rate you will rarely meet someone who's depressed who's also not anxious they're always there's always a correspondence there meaning over 65 percent of people who have depression or have been diagnosed also have an anxiety diagnosis and look at that the word of god even it specifies that it says anxiety in the heart of man causes depression if i'm anxious and what ifing and having this idea that i can't control or predict things that are going to happen then that's going to lead me to feeling bad it makes sense right and bi-directionally meaning if i'm depressed that's going to lead to more anxiety right so if i'm anxious it's going to lead to me feeling worse right so they co-occur but look at what it says it gives us the solution it says but a good word makes it glad what's a good word right the word of god is a good word it contains all the things we need to eliminate the symptomology that many of us struggle with amen it contains all the things we need to walk in freedom and victory it contains all the things that we need to reprogram ourselves and i'm just grateful that we're going to talk a bit about a good word today amen so again proverbs 12 25 so to wrap all that up i say all that to say that emotions have three parts right thoughts physical sensations or feelings pick which word you want but remember it means what's happening in your body right luke 21 9 talks about not being terrified which is again again a lot of arousal dread and whatnot right and then the behavioral response thoughts feelings and behaviors and we talked about anxiety being contained with negative coping is something that we do um we we use these coping strategies to try to feel better the backfire make us feel worse right it's like well if target makes me uncomfortable i won't go and then i wipe my brow and i'm like oh i dodged a bullet but what happens the next time you try to go there or kroger or walmart or another store right your brain reminds you and so does the enemy that you can't do it so now all of a sudden you can't go anywhere all right okay so we're gonna jump in but there's freedom from that and then we talked about chronic anxiety we talked about a spirit of fear and define that as we get into the new man in a second being a mindset a spirit of fear being a mindset focused on present and future danger now i should use another word in their present potential danger right present and potential danger present and potential future dangers does that make sense so in other words it's not that there's actual danger it's this idea that there's the potential of the other shoe dropping and therefore my focus is almost exclusively on on that all right so let's shift gears now we're going to get into some good stuff because i want to give some practical strategies and stuff as it relates to the new man it's all contained in the word of god and i'm just grateful i have it in one place here to extrapolate so people can actually practice some of these things so let's talk about it all right a spirit of fear now let's talk about that as we get into it a spirit of fear involves two types of thoughts all right this is this is important a spirit of fear involves two types of thoughts one is what we call fortune telling all right fortune telling well what do you mean brother kevin well fortune telling is basically saying that i'm jumping to conclusions it's also known as making a negative prediction about the future right if it involves people and what you're concerned they think about you it involves mind reading it's this idea that i have some ability right to predict negative outcome and calamity you see what i'm saying what's an example well an example of fortune telling would be you know when i walk in church they're gonna all look at me funny right or i'm going to bomb this exam right or i can tell this is going to be a bad day now i want you to understand why those thoughts are so powerful right proverbs 23 7 is a man thinketh in his heart so is he but why that's so important as we navigate our world is that fortune telling is treating our thoughts like facts rather than hypotheses so if i say that i can predict the future and it's negative my body is designed naturally to prepare me to deal with that right so oh tonight i'm not going to be able to sleep well your body is saying oh you're going to be in a fire later so basically what happens is your arousal in your body like we said in luke 21 now you're going to be terrified and therefore though your body may be exhausted your brain is still working you see what i'm saying so i say that to say that fortune telling is a super problematic thought and it's what we call a thinking trap right so there's these two thinking traps fortune telling is one of the thinking traps that we often find with a spirit of fear so we gotta identify that and call that out one thought one thinking trap attached to a spirit of fear is what we call fortune telling the second thinking trap that often we find when people struggle with a spirit of fear is what we call catastrophizing like a catastrophe aka thinking the worst aka blowing it out of proportion aka magnifying the problem right like jesus is not seated at the right hand right so it's this idea that things are horrible right words that contain all like sentences that contain always and never can clue you into catastrophizing sometimes in other words if i say something to myself like this always happens to me that's catastrophizing nothing always happens to you right i never get a break right they never speak to me that is also catastrophizing so it's not only that i'm blowing things out of proportion it's saying i can't cope with that outcome now i want you to think about that spiritually like if i'm saying not only is this so bad i'm saying not only that but i can't deal with it but it also implies that god can't deal with it now that's for somebody to hear because i think that's part of the block here is that god is saying i've given you right the same power that raised jesus from the dead i've given you my spirit right you have power love and a sound mind you have the characteristics of jesus on the inside you have that fruit of the spirit and it's an issue of activating it but if i'm implying with my thoughts and declaring it and saying that i can't handle it that implies that god didn't do what he already did through jesus at the cross y'all see what i'm saying so we got to get past that belief y'all and really get into it and recognize that it's not god right often we got to draw that line in the sand and say all right i'm ready to strap up i'm ready to go let's do this and let's come up with another way of thinking right we know about renewing our mind but we're going to talk about some practical ways to do that from the word in a second so get excited so catastrophizing so those two thinking traps will always always always always and always is catastrophizing but always lead to distress remember i said let me say that again fortune telling and catastrophizing since they're thinking traps they will always lead to distress because they fuel the fire to making negative predictions about the future it's assuming that i can't cope with this situation and it implies if you're honest with yourself that god ain't helping me through this you see what i'm saying and that's the problem is that if we conclude that then that's definitely misleading and it's more importantly not true okay all right so we're going to get into it now all right so those are the two thinking traps so now we're going to get into some some some meat for some people all right so let's talk about some practical strategies now as we talk about activating the new man all right so there's two questions as we talk about understanding a spirit of fear and countering a spirit of fear and activating the new man which is what essentially supersedes right a spirit of fear completely you got to do two things there's two questions you have to ask yourself number one what situations in my life trigger a spirit of fear what situations in my life trigger a spirit of fear to be clear trigger i mean situations right what are things that come before me feeling that way right so anytime we say trigger we really mean precursor or situation or thing and those vary right they can be thoughts they can be situations it could be smells and sense it could be memories it could be people it could be sounds a trigger's a trigger and they can be internal i just want to be clear about that so first of all you have to ask yourself and i would suggest always taking inventory what situation so there's no stone unturned what situations trigger a spirit of fear in my life so that's number one the second question that you have to ask yourself before really tackling this thing is what negative thoughts have i learned about this situation what negative thoughts have i learned about the situation so in other words identifying the situations and the triggers but the second most important piece is saying what are my thoughts associated with it see see now the enemy's gonna hate this all right because when you start saying all right devil like i'm popping my knuckles rolling up my my sleeves what's gonna happen now is you're gonna say now i'm taking authority right it's not just declaring it's about taking action at this point amen it's about taking action it's not just about speaking because again proverbs 23 7 as a man thinketh in his heart so is he and that's a powerful revelation because sometimes we convince ourselves that we really believe what the word says but if our actions aren't corresponding to it do we man so again proverbs 23 7 speaks to that so again we got to make a list of these things but also identify what are these negative thoughts that i'm going to take captive right ii corinthians 10 5. all right so let's get into it we know what the word of god says about this we can go to romans chapter 12 verses 1 and 2 and this is gonna kind of get us lead us into talking about how do we activate this new man so romans chapter 12 verses one and two and y'all know most of y'all know what this says we talk about this a lot i beseech you therefore brethren by the mercies of god right to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice right holy acceptable to god which is your reasonable service and then what it says verse 2 right and be not conformed to this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind and that next part is what was one of my favorite parts of this verse though that you may prove meaning renew your mind and when you renew your mind you may prove what what is that good and perfect and acceptable will of god so god's will for our lives good perfect and acceptable i all right amen another message all right so again it tells us there in romans 12 1-2 that not to be conformed to this world meaning the world thinks that way or ephesians chapter 4 talks a lot about that but as a born-again believer we now know that that's not how we are to think we have a new way of thinking but we have to activate it so romans 12 1-2 ephesians chapter 4 verses 23 and 24 underscore this even more one of my other favorite scriptures i use a lot when we're talking about our thought life and it says be renewed in the spirit of your mind right and that you put on the new man which created created according to god in true righteousness and holiness and true righteousness and holiness so these verses together are saying what it's saying we've got to be transformed by the renewing of our mind which comes from the word of god and it's saying that that new man that we put on also comes from the word of god so what am i saying i'm saying the answers that many of us have struggled with are in the word of god and i know everybody watching believes that i think the problem often happens though is that we all we often don't understand the application of the word and how that looks on a day-to-day basis so that's what i hope to accomplish today praise god all right so again romans 12 2 ephesians chapter 4 verses 23 and 24 alright so let's go so all right here we go activating the new man all right it involves two major components here we go two components number one the word of god just told us number one is activating the spirit of your mind activating the spirit of your mind right secondly and we're going to talk about this one next week so in part four our final appearance here um for this series we're gonna talk about the second piece and that is confronting situations that trigger a spirit of fear so the first one is activating the spirit of your mind and that's what we're going to talk about in a second and the second is confronting situations that trigger a spirit of fear so we're going to do that next time we're going to talk today about activating the spirit of your mind all right so let's go i'm excited all right here we go activating the spirit of your mind all right so when we talk about activating the spirit of your mind to counter a spirit of fear right activating the spirit of your mind to counter a spirit of fear there's a couple things that i want to extrapolate from the word of god that i want to give you all today that really is going to help some folks now i want to be clear about what i'm going to talk about um these things that we're going to talk about these require practice hey man it's just like reading the word we don't read the word once a week and expect it to come alive in our lives hey man if we're not applying it right faith without works is what right it's dead so in many ways we have to meditate not flirt with but meditate on the word of god so that we can activate it in our lives on a day-to-day basis the whole point of that right is so that our spirit man is in control right so that our soul pays attention to it and it influences our body so that we navigate our world successfully and not only are we meaningful meaningful and you know doing the great commission we're also living a life that's abundant and that we can actually spread the gospel to other people and be useful for the body of christ and build the kingdom hey man so i say all that to say that activating the spirit of your mind to counter a spirit of fear what we're gonna talk about is two things all right number one what i call new man questions new man questions all right so we're going to talk about what we call new man questions and we're going to talk secondly about what i call the old man new man dialogue the old man new man dialogue and this is something that and uh you know i'll keep you all posted at some point in the future but um i'll have a curriculum at some point that you'll hear about that speaks to mastering emotions from a biblical perspective uh essentially an emotional master class for believers and it's called it's basically kingdom principles to master i didn't say manage i said to master emotions and it will come videos and whatnot but we'll get into that but new man questions and then old man new man dialogues let's talk about new man questions i'm so excited about this y'all praise god because i can already tell just from uh some of the folks i've spoken to in the past that many of the things that uh we're talking about right now are gonna set some people free because some things are gonna click like that's the purpose of this is just like there's some things with our healing that jesus already paid for it's already done right we already have it and many of us aren't seeing that manifestation and we know that and there's many reasons for that but you know my ministry in this regard though is really saying all right that thing that's lacking that thing that we're missing right in the soulless realm that's a thought block or a pattern of thinking that spirit of fear we've been talking about i can tell you right now in jesus name that's gonna set some people free when some people get a hold of that rhema word that now we're right now that speaks directly to your situation all right so let's go so new man questions this is straight from the word of god i'm so excited about this because i like action all right so let's go so psalms chapter 77 verse 11. psalms chapter 77 verse 11 it says i will remember the works of the lord surely i will remember your wonders of old i will also meditate on all your work and talk of your deeds so if you're say if you're taking notes this is a powerful powerful scripture because it speaks to what i call the new man questions that we're going to talk about in a second to help you counter a spirit of fear so what this scripture is really saying and why it speaks to a new man question is that it's saying one antidote in the questioning to challenge how we've developed in many ways a spirit of fear is this idea of remembering what god's done in your life right so it's basically saying i will meditate on your works that you've done so part of the new man question which i'll break this down in a second i just want to give you some scriptures to support it is that we have to recall what god's done in our lives right so works from the past okay works from the past so somebody write that down all right so let's go to first corinthians chapter 10 verse 13. first corinthians chapter 10 verse 13. another very powerful scripture and we see this play out all the time here's what it says no temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man but god is faithful who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able but with the temptation will also make the way of escape that you may be able to bear it so what am i saying what i want you to pull away from this as we talk about new man questions this idea is that god provides escape from negative events from temptation but also other negative events see what i'm saying god provides a way of escape and he said that you'll be able to bear it and we'll talk about that in more detail on our last meeting together um but that's important because oftentimes we assume we can't bury and can't deal with it it's so uncomfortable it's not going to go away i'm going to pass that we'll talk about that next week but escape from negative events god provides escape from negative events right but god also has done wonders wonders and wonderful works in our lives all right so those are very two important points to to keep in mind let's go to isaiah chapter 55 isaiah chapter 55 and we're going to go to verse 11. isaiah 55 11 it says so shall my word be that goes forth from my mouth it shall not return to me void but it shall accomplish what i please and it shall prosper in the thing for which i sent it now i know not a lot of believers and a lot of people watching right now know that scripture and probably declare it and say it but here's what i want you to know about that scripture it says that god's word accomplishes what it's set out to accomplish and i know we know that but i think part of the problem when we're dealing with the spirit of fear and we'll get into the new main questions and the foundation for those are these scriptures is that we have to actively see that and say that and counter thoughts with it right god's word will not return void that's a fact and a truth amen that's tree of life eating you see what i'm saying so that is a truth and it's a fact his word does not return void right so it's so incredibly important to know that despite what i see in the natural this is true all right so we got god's word accomplishes what it sets out to accomplish god gives us escape from negative events and we have to recall the works from the past so remember that because i'm going to give you some questions in a second that are going to be powerful let's go to one more second thessalonians 2 thessalonians chapter 3 verse 3 2 thessalonians 3 3 here's what it says but the lord is faithful who will establish you and guard you from the evil one bottom line god is a faithful protector that's powerful god is a faithful protector so dr kevin what you saying here's what i'm saying i'm going to show you some questions in a second that i really want you to practice and it's all from the word of god and they are based on the word of god and the scriptures we just read and there's plenty others and just for the sake of time but let me let me kind of summarize what i'm saying because i've developed these what we call new man questions to help people challenge thoughts that make them uncomfortable so here's what we got works from the past right god's delivered me from so many things in jesus name right god helps me escape from negative events especially temptation in jesus name right god's word accomplishes what it sets out to accomplish but i have to be an active participant but his word will not return void amen and then god is a faithful protector now i want you to think about all those okay and now here's where we get into so what do we do with those statements and those verses right so here's where i call the new man questions all right so here's some new man questions that are directly from the word of god and then i'm going to show you how i like to use these oftentimes to help people counter thoughts that have been problematic right so these are new main questions all right so the first one let's see here sorry about that all right here we go so what's the evidence right that god won't provide what's the evidence that god won't provide another way to put that if you just want to attack the thought is what's the evidence that this thought is true right now understand there's facts and then there's truth what's the evidence that this thought is true so this is a new man question here's another one what does god's word say about this outcome that's powerful i love that one what does god's word say about this outcome okay we'll talk about how to use these in a second watch this am i certain that this is what will happen am i certain that this is what will happen another way to put that is am i certain that this is true meaning this thing that i'm thinking okay all right here's here's one if you really like i'm saying let's just go cut and cut to the chase and do i have a crystal ball i know y'all know that's a yes no question but do i have a crystal ball right and here's another powerful one what's happened in the past see how the scripture speaks to that what happened in the past right so when i was in the same situation what happened in the past did god deliver me did he not i think y'all know the answer to that but see oftentimes the enemy tries to take our attention to focus on the negative things that have occurred and shift our attention away from what we just read in the word of god that god is a protector god is faithful god's word never returns void you see what i mean so these are so important but we got to actively use these in order to activate the spirit of our mind right here's another one what is a scripture that speaks against this what is a scripture that speaks against this right let me give you one final one because i want to give you an example so you can see how to apply this and i like this one a lot this is one of my favorite does blank so fill in the blank does fill in the blank mean fill in the blank does fill in the blank mean fill in the blank so these are what i call new man questions and they directly come from the word of god so let me give you an example of how somebody has used this in the past okay so the old man new man dialogue now here's a really practical way for you to learn how to activate that if you've tried other that's like kevin i'm standing on the word like i'm declaring i'm doing these things i know god healed me through jesus i know that he did it we nailed it to the cross like right he was bruised for my transgressions right we know that he bore my sickness he bore everything and by his stripes i was past tense heal but i'm still struggling in this area of a spirit of fear but what i'm saying is that now that we know when the cat's been let out of the bag devil right we know now that since we understand where that comes from now that we know that we have that authority and that dominion now that we know that chronic anxiousness and fearfulness and whatnot and the manifestations manifestations and what the doctors have been saying right it's like oh well you have ocd well you have this and you have that now that we know the source of that now it's time to fight amen and to be on the offensive so i say that to say that the old man new man dialogue requires the following you get a sheet of paper and once you've identified those triggers and whatnot and those thoughts that have been plaguing you and whatnot then what you simply do is on one column you write old man and put a blank like a sentence you're gonna write a sentence there below that you're gonna write new man and put another blank and then you have old man again another blank a new man so basically if you have a sheet of paper just put old man new man old man new man old man new man old man new man and here's the final point you want to write on that sheet of paper put on the new man and put in parentheses ephesians chapter 4 verse 24 and that's going to be one final statement that you're going to make about the situation all right so let me show you how this dialogue plays out many of y'all who know uh those looney tune commercial or cartoons back in the day where they had like an angel on one shoulder and the devil on the other and the angel's like don't steal the meat remember that and then the devil's like still to me what's wrong with you poof and they go away and they always made a bad decision that's another conversation so i say that to say that the old man new man dialogue is like that in the sense that if you use these questions that are standing on the word of god the old man has to flee amen a spirit of fear has to be defeated because the questions contained in the new man dialogue here right absolutely are based on truth despite feelings hey man you gotta practice this let me give you an example watch this like this is this is a true example and watch how quickly you can debunk this if you take the time to do it right so person said to me old man here's the statement i said so what's the statement like what are you saying to yourself that makes you feel so disgruntled about you know your destiny and your purpose and the things you've had words spoken over you and whatnot they're not coming to pass and you're starting to get jaded with church and whatnot right like that's a real example person said all right the thought dr kevin that i had is i will never fulfill my destiny okay so y'all realize that there's a thinking trap there right and some of your thoughts can be both thinking traps at once to be clear i will never fulfill my destiny so not only is that fortune telling that's also catastrophizing at the same time it's like a double whammy right now you can imagine i don't have to tell you but you can imagine how that would make a believer feel if i say i will never fulfill my destiny my body is going to do what it's going to go mural and i'm going to be distracted i'm going to be upset and despondent i'm not going to be able to do things that i enjoy why because i told my body not to y'all see that thoughts feelings behavior so watch this i will never fulfill my destiny so here's what i hit him with with the question what's the evidence that you'll never fulfill your destiny that's the new man question so on the old man they wrote that statement i will never feel fulfill my destiny new man hits it with what's the evidence that i'll never fulfill my destiny watch this the old man answers it right honestly i don't feel like i know what god wants me to do so that's what the old man said in response watch what the new man says so i hit him with another one does feeling like so does blank mean blank that's this question watch this does feeling like i don't know what god wants me to do mean i will never fulfill my destiny see that inquisitive tone does feeling like i don't know what god wants me to do mean that i'll never fulfill my destiny i'll see that now it gets powerful watch this it's a true story watch this and it says no but it would help to know what he wants me to do okay but you don't stop there so we'll hit him with another question watch this what does god's word say about this what does god's word say about this right so that's a good question isn't it and here's what the old man said says well the god has a good acceptable and perfect will for my life even if i don't know what it is that's powerful right god has a good using the word god has a good perfect and acceptable will right for my life even if i don't know specifically what that is that's how they answered that question so it's despite what it feels like right despite what it looks like the truth is this you see what i'm saying and why we're not done right right so what does god's word say about this god has a good acceptable and perfect will for my life watch this do i have a crystal ball so do you have a crystal ball here's what they said they laughed actually they said well no like good okay good so new man one last question to kind of just like put like icing on the cake what's another explanation what's another explanation and this is where they ran out of bullets and praise god this is where they put on the new man and here's the statement that they were told to meditate on to declare which is a direct activation of that new man and they rehearse over and over and over and meditate on and meditate on here's the statement that they concluded from this dialogue god has a plan for my life even if i don't know what it is right now and then this i will continue seeking god and he is and always has been faithful praise god god has a plan for my life even if i don't know what it is right now i will continue seeking god and he is and always has been faithful understand where that person started and how they felt i will never fulfill my destiny and literally extrapolating the truth from god's word on paper so they can see it as an outsider and not be trapped in their feelings which is what the enemy wants us to do and that's often the case with our healing it's like well i'm just going to look at what my body's saying to me i'm just going to look at what the doctor is saying to me i'm just going to look at how i'm feeling in that spot on my skin but there's a praise god there is a truth in the word of god that said despite what i see and what i feel in the natural the word of god transcends that amen so this is a very effective way for us to say you know what i'm going to objectively get out of my head and not be trapped in the how i'm feeling and i'm gonna lay out on paper and it has a powerful effect if anybody of any of you all have written anything on paper it forces you to look at it like an outsider and i'm telling y'all that if you do this here are the thoughts that i've had with a spirit of fear here are the thinking traps contained in that i'ma do some old man new man dialogue i conclude with put on the new man a statement that i meditate on which the word of god tells us to do anyway and watch what happens to your day praise god i am so excited this is this is this is this is good all right so with all that being said putting on the new man it implies here's what it's saying here's a statement i have for y'all it implies meditating on the truth of god's word and rehearsing these truths in situations that trigger a mindset of a spirit of fear i'll say it one more time putting on the new man implies meditating on the truth of god's word and rehearsing meditating right on these truths in situations that trigger a spirit of fear it doesn't make any difference what that spirit of fear is talking about what it's telling you right now we're not talking about situations that are just it's just foolish to be in you know what i'm saying like something that's actually dangerous like an actual fire but i'm saying things where the enemy has convinced us that we can't tolerate it because that's a lie from the enemy amen so again praise god um uh hopefully you got something out of that and again as always if you need help with any of the the things that i've said if you just want to just need a word of encouragement you know i've been praying for everybody watching again kevin kycards.com is my email and again if you have a question about the old man new man and i can even like send you a sheet if you need it just let me know and contact me in that regard and praise god i'll see you all next friday and we're going to get into um talking about confronting situations that trigger this to to wrap things up a spirit of fear we're going to talk about how to confront situations and what the word of god says about that praise god uh love you guys see you guys next week
