Lecture on Gestalt Principles of Perception

Introduction

  • Imagine watching a basketball game on TV.
  • You perceive a series of still images as a fluid and realistic basketball game.
  • Gestalt principles explain how we perceive things the way we do.

Gestalt Principles Overview

  • Explains why we perceive a series of images as fluid motion rather than separate pictures.
  • Several laws or principles are developed by Gestaltists.

Key Gestalt Principles

1. Law of Similarity

  • Definition: Items similar to one another are grouped together by the brain.
  • Example: Squares and circles arranged in vertical columns are perceived as such due to similarity.

2. Law of Pragnanz

  • Definition: Reality is often organized or reduced to the simplest form possible.
  • Example: Overlapping circles are perceived as simple circles, not complex shapes.

3. Law of Proximity

  • Definition: Objects that are close to one another are grouped together.
  • Example: Circles in a group are perceived as together because they are closer to each other than to other circles.

4. Law of Continuity

  • Definition: Lines are seen as following the smoothest path.
  • Example: A set of circles is seen as a continuous line due to less steep angles.

5. Law of Closure

  • Definition: Objects grouped together are seen as a whole; the brain ignores gaps and completes contour lines.
  • Example: A set of shapes can be perceived as a triangle, even with gaps.

Conclusion

  • These principles illustrate how the mind organizes visual information into coherent, meaningful patterns.
  • They show the brain's tendency to perceive wholes over individual components.
