hi students in this video series I'm going to go through the textbook content with you some of you may find this useful when you revise for your wa2 so as I go through this video it'll be good for you to have your textbook review any point in time I won't go through it line by line in the textbook of course I'm going to try and summarize by any point in time you think I uh speaking too fast feel free to pause and Rewind feel free to pause the video and read the paragraphs in the textbook yourself so that you can understand the content a little bit better okay I'm just going to summarize okay so I'll break these videos into small videos each video will cover one section of the textbook chapter okay each section will be covering maybe one inquiry question okay so let's start with the first video so this video is about chapter six okay what did the people in Singapore experience during Japanese Occupation in particular okay this timeline we can skip La in particular this video we're gonna explore how did the Japanese establish control in Singapore okay so the points that you need to know for this section is basically in this table here okay you need to know how the Japanese can use force or the Japanese besides using post they also try to win royalty okay within using pause you should know at least a few of them in case I ask you an essay topic uh describe how the Japanese use force you must be at least be able to tell me at least two of the points here rescue describe or explain how the Japanese won the Loyalty of the people same thing you must know the sub points here okay so in this video I'll go through each of the sub points here how the Japanese use force and how they win loyalty to control the people in Singapore okay now let's look at so if you memorize anything memorize this data okay this will help you to understand this subsection okay so let's look at the first one so under using false there are a few ways the Japanese use Force okay so the first way is using harsh punishment if I think most of you understood this point quite well already so we have to use torture to sometimes get information out of all the people they arrested right sometimes they use um uh remember there's this one with the learning class about plucking fingernails uh displaying their heads on sticks so you can see the heads were displayed Link in spaces things like that okay we also learned that there was this group called a campaign that encouraged people they were basically like the Spy of the military police of the Japanese and they were always trying to find those who are being anti-japanese okay so they use a lot of force and sometimes they will resort to using torture and beating them until they re get whatever information that they want okay sometimes it will be in prison sometimes they may just straight up execute okay to make a example of you like if they know you're anti-japanese and they talk to you and they kill you and they show it to everyone everyone else will become much more fearful okay so the next one is imprison sorry next line is imprisoning Allied soldiers okay so in prison allies so just what is it about okay in Brazilian Airlines so just first you must know who is Ally Ally refers to the basically the British soldiers that were fighting the Japanese okay so one way they control the people in Singapore is by imprisoning all these Airline soldiers you must know that soldiers can fight they can fight back and try to carry out the Japanese so after the Japanese conquered Singapore they threw a lot of this uh and like a British soldiers they call it Airline because there were British soldiers there were New Zealand soldiers they were Australian soldiers they were Indian soldiers yeah all part of the British Empire so they all at the time some of them fighting in Singapore okay helping the British okay so a lot of them became what we call pows okay and they have to sometimes uh be humiliated they see here they were marched from okay Tima to Changi prison so China prison is where a lot of these prisoners were kept so by keeping the prisoners in prison okay it allows the population to be controlled because this uh these soldiers they may rise out against the German so we keep them in prison so that they cannot create any more trouble all right okay so the next factoring something you're quite uh learned before already in your wa1 okay so sochin basically refers to the operation where many of the anti-japanese people okay so anti-japanese people okay they were brutally perched brutally perched basically brutally killed okay it's a violent removal of a group of people okay and most of the people targeted were the Chinese because the Chinese at the time there were a lot of them were opposing to Japanese rule okay the when China was invaded by Japan many Singapore Chinese they send money they send food back to China to help them help defend China against Japan so when Japan invaded and conquered Singapore they started hunting down a lot of all these Chinese which they think will be anti-japanese okay so they conducted a lot of mass screening to check on people okay of course this was done a lot by the campetai the military police and many people up to 6 000 people were killed okay however some people think it's the figure is even higher up to 50 000 and so there is operation ching okay so I'll move on to the next page another way of using Force you can see all these doctoral weapons uh or these scenes of execution and all this okay very brutal stuff okay notice I'm just covering the white points because those are the main content okay any point really you need to read up a little bit more feel free to pause the video and read a bit okay now cursing the Chinese business Community what does that mean okay why is that a way of controlling so what you need to know is Chinese people a lot of these rich people okay they are quite rich okay they will consider the Richer okay they're rich and one of the reasons why they want to Target these rich people is because okay they know that they can get money out of them okay so they will ask all these Chinese Rich Chinese to give contribution okay and the Japanese asked all these people to give money to the Japanese government okay so that the Japanese government instead of killing these Chinese they know that this Chinese businessman could be very useful so they uh ask for a lot of money from them okay and all this will be helped okay this was in a way to punish the Chinese Community like okay so they take their money away so that's one way of controlling the population by taking away their money so they cannot use this money for you know to do empty Japanese stuff to give to the British you know to fund uh people who are trying to fight against the Japanese so they took away a lot of the money from the Chinese business Community those who weren't killed they were trying to take that money okay so that was using false okay so now okay remember the there are a few ways to Japanese control right you're using first and now we look at the nicer methods less violent methods which is winning loyalty so there are this High uh Five Points under here so I'll go through this fine very quickly okay so what does winning loyalty mean winning Loyalty means they want people to want to follow the Japanese so they do that one of the way is using propaganda okay we learned this is class propaganda it's basically a way to try to influence the mind of people in Singapore okay and one of the way to do it okay would be to try and send a lot of message to hospital to believe it so for example you can see propaganda posters photograph all this will be used to try and make people more loyal to the Japanese okay there's this one point here that I think we didn't really go through in class very much but you can see one example was the Indian uh how the Japanese targeted the Indians to try and win over their support okay so for example they say the Japanese promise to help free India from British rule and they created this Indian national Army okay to recruit Indians to fight against the British India okay and okay so one of the way okay to try and get people to win you always to tell them I will be here I'll help you to achieve what you want so many Engineers back then India was under British rule so they were telling the Indians you know if you join me you join the Japanese I will help you to free India from the British so they are trying to brainwash them to dig in the Champions will actually help them okay wow let's look at the other point now providing benefits to locals is also another way to try and win people over so the main point you need to know about this one is okay they give favorable treatment to certain groups and some of the groups that gain favors were the malays okay so for example um they create the my list okay they were treated less harshly Maria treated less harshly by the Japanese my pen drawing skill isn't very good academically science okay so you can see the malays were treated less harshly by the Japanese Malaysia India will charge lower fees than the Chinese to cross the Crossway so what is the point of doing so okay when I give you preferential treatment when I give you a good treatment [Music] right you will want to you like the Japanese additive member basically okay so that is the how they try to give benefits to locals to make them think that you know Japanese are not that bad after all okay so that is one way to win their loyalty okay so we skip this part as usual we just read the white parts okay so the last two pages now okay so the last way the Japanese tried to win loyalty of the people is to impose Japanese culture on them okay to impose Japanese culture now what does it mean okay basically it's trying to give the locals understand the Japanese culture okay if you love if you love Japanese culture right you want to support the Japanese after that okay so they are basically trying to make people think that you know Japanese rule Japanese culture and Japanese rule is good for you okay so what the way they do that is to teach the Japanese language okay in school instead of learning English they make sure they learn Japanese in Bongo okay adults also have to learn okay so by learning Japanese right they hope that you also start to appreciate Japanese cultural and support Japanese more okay and the other way is to cultivate the Japanese spirit and this could be including things like uh uh seeing the Japanese national anthem the kimigayo okay teaching them Japanese songs Japanese uh School Traditions like Mass exercises so you can see math exercises here uh which is what uh Japanese schools often do they also teach them Japanese martial arts like Kendo and Judo okay so that they they get exposed to a lot of Japanese culture and they think that you know Japanese culture actually is very useful actually very good to know and maybe it's not such a bad idea to be under the Japanese okay so these are the ways that the Japanese use to control people in Singapore okay so to sum up okay I'll go back to the fun again okay you must understand how at least we will describe how they use force in these four ways okay especially the harsh punishments I think these are very important points within loyalty you must understand using propaganda and uh how they provide benefits and impose Japanese culture okay all right so this is the end of the first
