Challenges in Enforcing Privacy Laws

Do you see an appetite for enforcement coming down the pipeline at all? Well, I think, you know, enforcement has always been weak. The U.S. actually has had, you know, I think pretty good enforcement as countries go. When you look at a lot of countries around the world, enforcement is actually really poor. You know, there's some countries that have passed a comprehensive privacy law, but they haven't even formed the enforcement body yet. So it's kind of like you take it seriously enough to pass a law, but you didn't even bother to form anyone to actually enforce the law. We have a number of agencies in the United States that enforce the law, and I think they do well given what resources they have. But it's kind of like enforcement is on the roadways, right? You know, for every speeder caught, there's a hundred more that are not caught. And that same thing with enforcement. You really have a few cases out of the hole where someone gets nabbed by the enforcer. And that's always been a problem. You know, we just don't have the resources to have a robust enforcement where most offenders are getting caught.
