A-Level Sociology Revision Tips

[Music] right do i do we say right too many times how many of you guys are saying right all the time now because listen uh i am just i'm just the worst this is the first time i've recorded like a sit down video by myself since like my first q a we were celebrating 1k then and my other two revision videos are pre-recorded this one is not so right now in this moment of time we are on 10 000 subscribers so thank you so much i can't i honestly can't believe it i think you guys are just absolutely amazing um and i just [ __ ] love you melissa we will celebrate 10k in due course time i'm doing a q a next week in celebration and i'm doing a giveaway video the week after for now we are going to do the very very highly requested videos revision tips and advice for a level sociology i'm going to talk to you guys about my experience during a level sociology and then i'm going to be answering some questions that you guys have sent me through snapchat instagram and twitter if you're not following me on that make sure you are because of this sad i picked sociology level because i was very passionate about for example like societal issues and i thought i could just talk and talk and talk and i thought it would be very easy common sense i did not know there would be a dark and there would be a marx there will be a freaking foucault it will be a gideons i was like what is that what is a murdoch what is a universal family what are these words what do you realize how much social theory would be in sociology because i literally thought it was about common sense and so it kind of threw me off but i ended up really liking the course i had a really great teacher at bcit's college jill boo [ __ ] i absolutely love you and i had harriet as well which is my other sister's teacher i loved her so much even though she left in a s pagan i was really passionate about astrology and i said to myself i'm going to get a i'm going to try best again a and i was very fortunate enough to get 99 obviously the spec has changed but from my spec which was aqa we did family households which i got 78 out of 80 on and then i did education and research methods which i got 12920 on and then i therefore was predicting a star for sociology and i don't know when i just when i was in a2 sociology i just had this mindset like i'm gonna get an a star like i have to this is my subject my passion and it was really great there was a time where my teacher had to take a small break and we had a supply and even though the supply teachers were so crap like i took charge and i organized i'm actually such a nerd i'm actually doing the most i organize my own oh my god i actually organized my own sociology class and like i organized study groups that we would say behind after wednesday i would be writing like um exam techniques and essay tips and i'd print them out on an a4 paper and i would hand it out to all my classmates these times i haven't even finished the a level like i already know everything and so honestly i was very confident that i was going to get a good grade in sociology i knew i was going to get a 9 star because there was no way that i was going to go in the exam and be like i don't know what this is because i was going to revise everything there is this sort of view that sociology is very easy i think it's very easy to get like a c or a d in it and but i think it's very hard to get like an eight star but that's why i'm going to be giving you guys some tips and answers from your questions so the first thing you guys want to know is how do i memorize content okay i understand in a level sociology there is a lot of content there are fat fat books if any of you have um like the haralumbus book rob webb book the collins book you know how i've read all that by the way you know how much you know how big sociology a level is quite it's quite fat and you think right i have to remember all this knowledge no you don't okay the first thing is no in the master scheme it does not say that the students have to be answering about this man about this question about where he lived about what he ate about what sort of pepper he used to wipe his art now you'll be very contemporary and you can get your knowledge from a wide range of sources that's the best thing so you guys think rah there's so much talent there's something i bring in girl think of it as i listen there's so much resources i can use that there's too many so these are sociology level you will never run out of ideas because you have so much to learn think of it like that girl now what i believe and what i tell my students last year when i was cheering is that there are two parts of sociology a level one is content thinking sociologically then the other is exam technique which is writing sociologically it's really hard to summarize the whole freaking year in a freaking 10 minute video but all i will say is listen if you are really really struggling with memorizing everything the best thing for you to do is to break it down into the different sociological theoretical perspectives right so let's just say we're doing the topic of family i'm sure everybody does this topic because everybody does a topic family or education really [ __ ] so literally get a piece of plain paper and think right and write down functionalism and what all the ideas and all the arguments that a functionalist would argue in regards to the family and i mean everything when you get your book go through all the chapters on the family regardless of the essay topic and think about a functionalism put him there i would recommend that you have free arguments per theoretical perspective so for example if you have functionism on family you need to know murdoc that whole you need to know persons that are the how and you need to know younger well matt but if you're really bad with names then don't think of the names think of the concept so for example murdoch the four functions passes the two functions do that for every single topic whether it's family education added religion and theoretical perspectives as well so do it all for that and also make sure that you have all the theories it's not just functionalism and marxism there's feminism then there's different types of feminism there's different types of marxism different types of fossilism there's a new right perspective then there's the new left perspective those old structuralists and then you have the actions perspectives on the bottom of approach and where you see interpretivism and interactionism and then you have post-structuralist there's a fly [ __ ] you better move them up i had a bummer clapped what was i saying but you have the prescriptions perspective and then you have the person wasn't perspective if you're unsure about all the theories make sure you ask your teacher one more time to go through them with you because listen sometimes it's not in their book can i have all the theoretical perspectives there and then look at all the studies and think does this study about being a whole in a new age relate to post-modernism or functionalism obviously pomo yeah personalism so you will put that there and then have three points per theory per subject and the best thing about these three arguments is that you can always use them again for example if you are doing a question on functionalism's perspective of education you're not just going to talk about the free perspective that they say on education you're going to bring in marxism and feminism and press modernism ariana and beyonce and therefore you'll be able to utilize all the other points that you've made for the other theories in the same essay so really ensuring i know it looks like a lot but don't look at it as so much content to learn look as if right let me be selective let me pick one two three because those are my three and i'll remember them and then you get it done also try to be content about that sociology is about being contemporary so try to bring your own knowledge into this and also try to bring knowledge that is from current news for example theresa may the shampoo brand her policies aren't in the textbooks yet because i haven't been made yet so bring them and apply them to your essays the way that i remembered content was literally just by doing essay plans an essay plan and essay plans and it's really hard to show you guys about actually being your tutor um but that might change link wink indirect indirect um but basically i would have a plain piece of paper and on the top i would have the essay title and i will put a grid i'll put a grid of about 10 boxes and for example if i had i know that it says have changed and the maximum change but i had a 33 marker i would do 10 boxes my intro and my conclusions are 12. i'll do a 12 point plan and each box will be a different argument also color code them so for example what my beautiful sociology teacher used to do was use the color code so like for example functions and would be light blue marxism obviously red feminism would be pink and then you'd have like green for interpretivism and then on my essay plans i would color code them if this was a function as an essay on education uh my first three paragraphs would be blue blue blue so i'll be like durkheim one paragraph passes one another paragraph and david some more final paragraph davidson wars modification and then i have a red paragraph after that which would be marxism who talked about uh dars and guintas then i have a pink paragraph talking about feminism and what they say and what they criticize functions them on another paragraph about post-modernism which would be yellow so that's how i would do it color coding really really helps i know that sociology can seem quite like there's so much to learn but when you bring in images and media and colors it honestly changed the whole a level for me now there are some sociology topics that don't really have a theory so for example if you do religion and you're doing the topic of i don't know fundamentalism this got really deep boy um you know there are some texts which are just they're just authors they're just sociologists that don't really fit themselves into a group you don't have to explicitly say mr felicia is a functionalist but you can say if it sounds like mr felicia uses a functionalist school of thought in his argument of that explain why he's a function so explain it that's just a way to help you remember the different names of the different sociologists by putting them into different theoretical groups but and there is a big but nicki minaj up in this [ __ ] you need to be careful that you don't do the following which we're going to get into now when we talk about writing sociologically which is doing a shopping list of theories i'm sure you've heard some of your teachers saying this like listen namuda the reason why you ain't getting an a is because you literally are you look like you're going to iceland with your shopping list of berries now the way to avoid that is through having the perfect essay structure now listen the different routes to getting in a star this is my route to my essay plans obviously your teachers might disagree but all i can say is i don't know i got the grade so bye-bye and my students they got a great so bye-bye so the first thing you're going to want to do is in your introduction we're being very specific here there's only two things that we're going to do in our introduction we're gonna define and we're gonna map so what do i mean by define if the question is a theoretical based question i.e what is the marxist perspective of religion then you will define but what is marxism listen booboo it is a structures perspective that is conflict that sees society as negatively encompassing capitalism values you know what i'm trying to say that you want to sort of just define what marxism is very briefly and when i mean map i mean like listen to this yeah right when i mean map i don't mean say in this essay i'm going to talk about felicia's mom and her blood claw baby i don't know where i'm going with this but you need to just really and truly just say look [ __ ] however there are some other theoretical perspectives that disagree with master them for being too deterministic too conflicting and dated do you see those words what did i say conflicting deterministic and dated what other social perspective would argue that a marxist is too conflicting obviously the funks right the functionalists who would argue that they're too deterministic obviously interactivism interaction is theory and who would say they're dated postmodernism would say that so you're not explicitly saying in this essay i'm gonna talk about promo and i'm gonna talk about functionalism and feminism but you're implicitly saying look this is marxism i'm gonna define them but also just know just know my guy just know yeah examine i just know that there are some people that have some things to say about these hoes and we're gonna have a bad girls club love and hip-hop reunion in this essay because everyone's gonna be fighting each other okay so now that the intro is out of the way we can start on the paragraphs now the paragraph structure is this point explain your point give an example analyze your example and link back that is your first paragraph so let's just say we're talking about the functions and view on religion these are very easy questions so this is why i'm gonna do it your point would be traditional functionalist diacon would argue that religion is beneficial for society as it creates and enhances our collective conscious right that's your point and within your point you see the word collective conscious that's like your concept now when you explain your point you're going to be actually explaining the concept what is a collective conscious or how does it happen and the key phrase to then say is this is because this is because religion acts as an integrative source that unites individuals regardless of social characteristics i'm literally trying to hear and brings them together through rituals and worshiping totems you see what i did there i bring another concept totems and i talk about rituals now that i've explained my point of how religion acts as a character conscious for rituals and totems give an example so you can talk about mosques you can talk about church like the act of church the actual mosque you can talk about um the worshipping of flags you can also talk about back in the day they watch they think of stones and rocks and candles and pilate and daisies are those daisies i don't know what they are now analyze your example now my sentence to start off my analysis of the example is this shows so what does this show and this shows that regardless of social framework and political circumstances that religion and all religions unite individuals regardless of the society that they're from and bring them together creating the collective conscious someone be on this line and then you just want to link back to the question which is girl and when you link back you also want to quote the question or you basically want to read what did the fly just come up my blood clot ear and then you want to use the words of the question so if the question is what other function is contribution of religion then you would say therefore the functionalist contribution of religion use the speech marks as well girl shoulder examiner listen i'm giving you what you want you wanted me to answer the question i'm gonna answer questions i'm gonna bring the question in my essay and then say listen therefore it's so clear to see that the budget doesn't say this about religion and that is beneficial and it's great for society done and then to avoid the shopping list that we talked about earlier you don't want to bring this paragraph and link it to the next paragraph and this is the thing about getting an a on a science sociology right it's so easy to bring all your different arguments because you have so many arguments you bring in you need to say the examiner listen girl girl i have been preparing for this moment in my life i was rooting for you we were out running for you and you said the reason why i'm gonna bring the next paragraph is because of this and this is where your link comes in your link is going to show your examiner why you're bringing your second or your third paragraph into say girl i thought about this i'm ready to get my eight star so the next paragraph let's just say for example will be about bella and bella's who's a neo-functionalist who argues the concept of civil religion your link from der khan to bella will be girl however durkheim's arguments or joy times examples are quite dated in the fact that they mainly focus on traditional religions and structural religions and organized religions in a new ways that we have today we need to also focus on the positive aspects of new age religions do you see that that's it then that'll be your link and then you'll say neo functions bella would argue that in today's society where we have an integration of social characteristics new forms of religion take place that have the same beneficial factors that derekum was arguing that's your point then you would explain that point explain what it's different religion talk about this talk about that talk about the queen can we give examples and there you go and if you're evaluating through theory like if you're going to bring a marxism in that then that's beautiful you say girl the function is there kind of the blood clot there kind let me know i'm actually kind of rude completely criticize the dead cat's perceptive because durkheim fails to acknowledge or ignores the negative or conflicting aspects that religion has on society that's your link instead this is your point now marxists such as karl marx argues that religion is the opium of their people then explain that blah blah blah blah blah blah give examples and you're done you need to do that as many times as you can in an essay now this is where the ar1 and ao2 comes in so pay attention to this your point is your a01 okay your explanation of your point is ar1 your example is ao2 your analysis of your example is ao2 and your link back um is a1 then for the second paragraph your link is ao2 because you're evaluating because you're saying well do we agree with darkham do we disagree then your point is a1 and so on and so on so really and truly i know that some people do like a whole paragraph of a1 then the whole paragraph of ao2 this is not psychology a level embed it that is the best type of sociology like someone would do a whole paragraph and directly and then be like oh but this was dated the end i'm thinking [ __ ] you could have got that sentence this is dated and you could have got that little evaluation mark that you're gonna have at the end you could have you could have put some water on that put some saw you could have photosynthesized that and grew it into a proper paragraph and say well this is dated because these times we have new religions and these times post-modernists would say this time right hey so you can really develop those evaluation months and you guys bring the little ones into big paragraphs that is how i did it now conclusions now they're more strict about this in cambridge but if you look at the mark schemes and examiner's reports it actually says that to get in the top band you need to have a sound conclusion or a solid conclusion these are my tips for conclusion of course they differ i have the rule of five and that's what i taught my students the first thing you say in a conclusion is to conclude because listen yeah let's be real for a second your examiners don't get marked per hour they get marked per exam they're gonna be wanting to read your thing okay bye bye bye so i can make money so i can go buy chicken and chips from pfc or sam's chicken shop so you need to sign post and make it so clear to your examiner i'm doing my conclusion now so i'm literally gonna say the word to conclude that's it and the majority of cambridge students even knew that now for this for their degree they just say to conclude it save someone's time who has time for me overall at the end of their day no okay to conclude the second thing you're going to want to do is complement so complement the question or complement the theory that the question is talking about if we're talking about functionalism view on religion we'll just stick with this example let's talk about how useful the theory is because these times they'll be all we're all quick to cast that kind of functionalism but you know they're the ones that started all of this we wouldn't have mastered them and feminism and post-racialism and bomber clitorism if it wasn't for durkheim and his theory then the third thing you're gonna do is cuss you're gonna say but this nutty girl and then you can go ham and be like it's crap because of this this is this it ignores this so basically summarizing all your points be adding a bit of a bit of um packet noodle flavor you're giving it a bit of indomin you're doing a bit of pizzazz and the fourth thing you want to do is say well whose view do you think is better so for example do you think the marxist view is better or do you think they're all crap and whatever you need to be unique in your conclusion give your own point say well you know what well they're all crap because the way religion is defined is completely different around the world and therefore we can never even answer the question they start it for you now bring in like your meta narrative points think think so philosophical and think this question can't even be asked in today's society because these times beyonce was snubbed by adele the last part they concluded just to link back to the question like you would do in in the paragraphs and say well therefore the functionless contribution of religion is dated or needs work on or is a basic [ __ ] now there's other parts of the um a level that we also need to focus on which a lot of you guys have said which is methods now acronyms really really helped and what my beautiful teacher did joe buck i will say her name again and again again is she gave us two acronyms the first one is esquio just think about that i don't know what seasoning that is i don't know what food that is i don't know what type of drug escriyo champions but listen it's good the squeal shop stands for the different research methods that they are so escrio is all the primary methods such as experiments kind of all experiments surveys questionnaires interviews observation and sharpies on the secondary methods which are statistics historical documents official documents uh shop and mass media and p personal documents i still got it i still got it so make sure you know every single one and you know strengths are weaknesses for all of them okay now where do you find these strengths and weaknesses from from the other agreement which i'm sure you all know all your teachers have told you is pervert and not bill cosby pervert just pervert p practical ethical r reliability v validity e enough question mark are representativeness and theory now my method for these questions were in my introduction i would define the the method i would define what the hell a survey is or what the hell that experiment is i would say what type of data it brings is it secondary to primary and what theoretical perspective would favor it okay um and then i was signed through some of the troubles and weaknesses my first paragraph will be practical issues so the peak on purpo and i will talk about one strength and one weakness in the paragraph of practical you're gonna have the acronym called trunk no not rita aura just traps in general t time r researcher bias a access m money p personal characteristics so you would then pick two and talk about a strength and a weakness and how that relates to your chosen research method then my second paragraph will be e which will be the ethical issues one stream from one weakness and also for ethics so the acronym for ethics is so many african ethical issues is drips deception right to withdraw informed consent protection from participant no protection from psychological harm physical harm and social harm and s which is situational ethics that's not really in your mark scheme but this is something that we learnt into situational ethics is basically just means what you're doing in this study if it breaks ethical concerns is it for the good of society so my third paragraph was reliability versus validity so for example is my method reliable and i'll give examples of the reason why it's a reason why it isn't and if it is reliable then does that mean it's valid the whole debate behind that is well if a method can be repeated so many times can it really get valid in-depth insightful knowledge if it can be repeated from bob and tom and adam and joe no it can't be so you have a little debate in that paragraph about your about your method and then the four paragraph is going to be the e versus r which is enough versus representativeness um is my method enough can it be repeated can i get a big sample and as a result does that then make it representative so you have a little sort of debate or a little paragraph about that um and then the idea of that paragraph is will really truly no method is representative nurse or can get enough data as a result we need methodological pluralism and triangulation it means that no method is enough and we always need more methods and then to conclude you would use the same five rules and talk about to conclude the strengths the weaknesses what view is better or what method do you think is about and they're just leaning back to the question the other part of this highway level is memphis in context but from what i remember it was always about they give you a method and they give you a topic like an educational topic let's just say we're doing the method of i don't know question is am i trying to look at truancy or banking in school i would then look at the method of what did i say did i say questionnaires and then i would write pervert and then for the truancy for the banking i'd write issues just general issues about it so for example the fact that you know um people bank they wouldn't come to school therefore why the hell they do my survey or my questionnaire and then i will link what is missing and not doing my survey effects well that affects my validity because i'm not going to get a true insight into why people bunk there's a whole paragraph there for you listening content is so hard at spain because you have different levels as well level one level two level three please ask your teacher about this if your teacher doesn't help you please report them um because by just know that you always have to think you are the researcher and i'm gonna go in you can write in first person i did and you're gonna go in and you're gonna do this method and do this study and it's going to be banned you don't need that many paragraphs i think maybe four and pervert is also a bigger acronym for pet so practical ethical and theoretical and theoretical is reliability ability enough and representativeness um so as long as you talk about a paragraph on each of those you should be solid okay that is it i hope that is enough and i hope that answers all your questions it's really hard i used to tutor in this so i used to teach this like every single day and i used to go in depth so it's quite hard for me to consolidate everything into a small little video but just know that sociology a level is all about writing sociologically and thinking sociologically make sure you know your content but make sure you know how to write and the best way to write is past papers a lot of you guys have asked me when you get your past papers from from 1997 and i'm not gonna lie i got it from my teacher so hopefully your teacher can find it for you if not you can just google it like google s-e-l-y-1 which was my paper's name 2006 and just pray that you find it but also there are some textbooks that really help as well so you've got the rob web book also think about this yeah rob webb is the examiner for aka sociology do you not want to get his book here's the examiner you've also got harold lambert's you've just got collins and in those books they give you examples and they give you like past paper mock questions do them on exams reports help so much as well and make sure that you're reading about current affairs like in the guardian just go for like 10 minutes a day look at the news bring in your own knowledge bringing your own like contemporary knowledge about the world the one thing that we can benefit from that all these other older mandem khan is that we are an of an age of social media so if you feel like black lives matter is important but it's not your textbook bring it in i did that this a level is very very time consuming because it's so much to learn but it's also very very fun and listen i had a great teacher and i just had so much fun to say level but listen please listen to this as long as you tried your hardest giving your circumstances that's all that counts okay understand that as sociology students you guys are aware of the different barriers and extenuating circumstances that we might face going through school and going through education but that's the end of the video i love you guys so much again thank you so much for 10 000 subscribers i can't believe it like this is mine but we'll address this in another time um good luck on your exam let me know how it goes and i wish you guys the best of luck [Music] for example teresa may the fly i'm gonna kill your mom oh my lord
