Hola, en esta lección vamos a hablar de algunos verbos con cambio radical de E a I en el tiempo presente. So far, we've seen two different types of stem-changing verbs in the present tense. If you haven't seen them yet, you might watch the videos on E to IE, stem-changing verbs in the present tense, and O to UE, stem-changing verbs in the present tense.
And before watching this video, you might watch the video on DECIR in the present tense. Let's see if you can remember how we change DECIR. You should have come up with Yo digo, I say Tú dices, you say Él dice, he says Ella dice, she says Usted dice, you say Nosotros decimos, we say. Nosotras decimos, we the females say.
Ellos dicen, they say. Ellas dicen, they the females say. Ustedes dicen, you all say.
If you remember, the verb decir is a little different from what we might expect from regular IR verbs. What are two of the things that make decir different from regular IR verbs? The first is in the yo form. Digo with a G.
There's no C in the yo form. Hmm. Secondly, the E changes to an I in these forms.
Notice that it only changes in the forms within the shoe or the boot. That's why many Spanish teachers call verbs that go through this change shoe verbs or boot verbs. because the stem, i, changes to i within the shoe.
But decir isn't the only verb to change like this in the present tense. Some other common verbs that change from i to i are conseguir, pedir, repetir, seguir, y servir. Wow, here's a first! Unlike the e to ie and the o to ue stem changers, the e to i stem changers appear to be only ir verbs.
Hmm, let's try conjugating a few more of them. How about pedir? You try first. Remember that the e turns to an i in the shoe. You should have come up with, Yo pido, I ask for, Tu pides, you ask for, Ask for.
Él pide. He asks for. Ella pide.
She asks for. Usted pide. You ask for.
Formally. Nosotros pedimos. We ask for.
Nosotras pedimos. We, the females, ask for. Ellos piden. They ask for.
Ellas piden. They, the females, ask for. Ustedes piden. You all ask for. Por ejemplo, Mis amigos piden arroz con leche ahí.
My friends ask for. rice with milk there also notice that pedir could be like to order like in a restaurant sense paco no les pide consejos a sus papas paco doesn't ask his parents for advice how about another one seguir you try first and again don't forget the shoe or boot You should have gotten yo sigo, I follow, or I continue. Tú sigues, you follow, you continue. Él sigue, he follows, he continues. Ella sigue, she follows, she continues.
Usted sigue, you follow, you continue, formally. Nosotros seguimos, we follow, we continue. Nosotras seguimos, we the females follow, we the females continue.
Ellos siguen. They follow. They continue.
Ellas siguen. They the females follow. They the females continue.
Ustedes siguen. You all follow. You all continue. Por ejemplo, ¿los niños no siguen las instrucciones?
The children don't follow the instructions. Aunque ya no tiene hambre, Juan sigue comiendo. Although he's not hungry anymore, Juan keeps eating, or continues eating.
Notice that in the yo form, we don't need the u like in the rest of the forms. This is because the g is already k before o. If we left the u on there, we would sound like siguo, which isn't consistent with the sound of the infinitive seguir. Now, how about you practice some more?
I'll give you who does something as well as the verb. Change the verb to the correct form, and then see if you can figure out what it would mean in English. Claudio y Alma dicen.
Claudio y Alma say. Repito. I repeat. Remember that if there's more than one E in the stem changers, usually it'll be the one closer to the end.
Sigues. You continue. You follow. Ángela sirve. Ángela serves.
ustedes consiguen you all get or you all obtain pido i ask for decimos we say or we tell teresa y violeta and violetta repeat sigo i continue or i follow vd sirve you formal serve muy bien now i'm going to give you some sentences in spanish go ahead and see if you can figure out what a possible translation could be in English. Pause the video if you need more time and check the word bank below this video if you need help on an additional word. Rebecca y Noemí piden hamburguesas y las comen en el parque. Rebecca and Noemí order hamburgers and eat them in the park. En la clase, los alumnos repiten después de la maestra.
in the class the students repeat after the teacher la profesora se enoja con lucas porque no sigue sus instrucciones the female teacher gets mad at lucas because he doesn't follow her instructions si octavio no le pide perdon a su novia ella nunca lo va a perdonar if octavio doesn't ask for forgiveness from his girlfriend she isn't going to forgive him algunos dicen que la vida es un sueño some say that life is a dream como consigo trabajo en internet how do i get a job on the internet a los gatos y a los perros les fascina la luz del laser y por eso la siguen the laser's light is fascinating to the cats and dogs and that's why they follow it les fascina is kind of a backwards seeming translation but it's it is fascinating to them or it fascinates them lace means to them para que sirve la luna what purpose does the moon serve or what is the moon for los ninos repiten casi todo lo que oyen the children repeat almost everything they hear ¿Uno más? Francisco está frustrado porque su equipo favorito sigue perdiendo en el partido. Francisco is frustrated because his favorite team continues to lose in the game. Notice that we have a form of seguir plus an ing form.
We have the form of SEGUIR plus a verb in the ING form. It is to keep doing something or to continue doing something. So in the example, sigue perdiendo, they continue to lose or they keep losing. Es todo para esta lección. I hope you found it helpful and understand at least a little better the I to E stem changing verbs in the present tense.
