Causes

  • Primary Cause: Rapid gastric emptying post-surgery.
  • Mechanism:
    • Early dumping: Fluid shift to intestines causing diarrhea and bloating.
    • Secretion of substances by intestines causing increased heart rate and decreased blood pressure.

Diagnosis

  • Based on symptoms and medical history.
  • Possible tests:
    • Blood tests
    • Upper gastrointestinal X-ray
    • Gastric emptying study

Treatment

Lifestyle and Diet Changes

  • Avoid drinking fluids 30 minutes before/after meals

Medications

    • Side Effects: Nausea, pain at injection site, blood sugar changes.
  • Acarbose: Used to reduce symptoms of late dumping syndrome.

Surgical Options

  • Surgery may be required to correct issues post-bypass.

Complications

  • Dehydration due to vomiting and diarrhea
