Cervical Radiofrequency Treatments

Overview

  • Also known as radiofrequency neurotomy or rhizotomy.
  • A minimally invasive procedure for managing facet joint-related neck pain.

Facet Joints

  • Small joints located throughout the spinal column.
  • Responsible for transmitting pain signals through small nerves called medial branches.

Procedure

  1. Preparation:

    • Performed under local anesthetic.
    • Skin and deeper tissues are numbed with anesthetic medication.
  2. Guidance:

    • A special x-ray machine is used to guide the radiofrequency needle to the irritated medial branch nerve.
  3. Electrode Insertion:

    • A radiofrequency electrode is inserted through the needle.
    • A small electric current is passed to test the position of the needle.
  4. Heating the Electrode:

    • The electrode is heated to stun the nerve and prevent transmission of painful signals to the brain.

Recovery and Effectiveness

  • Pain relief typically takes 4 to 6 weeks to manifest.
  • Relief can last between 6 months to 24 months, but results may vary.
