Lecture Notes: Mastering Short Answer Questions (SAQs)

Introduction

  • Understanding SAQs can be challenging for students in AP World, AP Euro, and APUSH.
  • The SAQ format can cause anxiety and stress.
  • The goal is to simplify SAQs by explaining them clearly.
  • Important update on SAQs following this year's national exam scoring.

Structure of SAQs

  • Two types:
    1. With Stimulus: Includes a document/image, followed by three prompts labeled A, B, C.
    2. Without Stimulus: Only three prompts.
  • Each prompt is typically worth one point but occasionally two if it requires two tasks.
  • On the AP exam, four SAQs are given; three need to be answered.
  • Responses should be concise: 2–3 complete sentences.

Strategy for Answering SAQs

  1. Understand the Stimulus and Prompt

    • Begin by reading the prompts, not the stimulus.
    • Mark up the prompts to identify:
      • Categories: Specific topics or themes to address.
      • Time Period: Relevant historical timeframe.
      • Historical Thinking Skill: E.g., causation.
    • Example: From 2022 AP World Exam, focus on economic and political developments.
  2. Approach to the Stimulus

    • Analyze the stimulus after understanding what to look for.
    • Mark up necessary information to answer prompts effectively.

Answering SAQs Using TEA-T Formula

  • Topic Sentence: Restate prompt with a piece of evidence.
  • Explanation of Evidence: Define the evidence.
  • Analysis: Show how evidence supports the topic sentence.
    • Example: Renaissance intellectual change via humanism.

Changes in Scoring and Advice

  • Previously believed simple identification suffices for certain prompts.
  • Now, explaining evidence is required even for "identify" prompts.
  • Scoring inconsistencies observed at AP World national reading may affect other subjects.
  • Advised to follow TEA-T method for consistency and full points.

Additional Resources

  • Encouraged to explore further resources for AP History writing.
  • Mention of a Cram Course for comprehensive support.

Ensure to utilize these strategies consistently to tackle any SAQ confidently and score maximum points. Stay updated on any changes in exam scoring standards. Use the TEA-T method to cover all bases in your responses.
