Bow Changes and Right-Hand Technique in Violin Playing

Importance of Smooth Bow Changes

  • Smooth bow changes are crucial for shaping the melody.
  • Maintaining consistent intensity of sound is key to achieving smooth bow changes.
  • Keeping the bow straight builds confidence and control over the sound.
  • Good performances require enhancing the music to connect with the audience.

Correct Posture for the Right Hand

  • Relaxed Shoulder: Feels like pulling it down.
    • Essential for preventing pain and avoiding shallow or forced sound.
  • Elbow Position: Level with the string being played.
    • Should be neither too high nor too low.
    • Never higher than the wrist to avoid artificial sound.
  • Wrist Position: Level with the elbow, relaxed and responsive.
    • Connects the larger arm parts to the smaller parts (fingers).
    • Follows small motions to ensure even transfer.
  • Finger Position: Relaxed and responsive.
    • Act as a cushion, especially during bow changes at the Frog.

Straight Bow Direction

  • Divided into four parts from the Frog down:
    1. Open your arm in front of your body.
    2. Open your elbow in front of you.
    3. Slightly pronate the wrist.
    4. Extend your fingers to sustain straight bow direction.
  • Reverse this order for the upward movement.

Bow Change Techniques

At the Frog

  • Two approaches:
    1. Cushion Movement: Utilizes wrist and fingers.
    • Relaxed and responsive, with a natural circular movement.
    • Trust the movement, avoid overcomplicating it.
    1. Whole Arm Movement: Relies on entire arm.
    • Fixed position of fingers, wrist, elbow, and arm.
    • Movement made by the whole arm without additional finger motion.

At the Tip

  • Keep fingers passive during the change.
  • Pronate wrist according to dynamics.

Exercises

In Front of a Mirror

  • Ensure every small detail is correct.

Exercise 1: Correct Posture Position

  • Make large circles with the hand to arrive at the fixed position on the Frog.
  • Ensure shoulder, elbow, and wrist are in correct posture.

Exercise 2: Key Movements for Straight Bow Direction

  • Start at the Frog.
  • Focus on first opening movement of the arm to a 90° angle with the elbow.
  • Open hand in front of you only from the elbow.
  • Practice bow change at the tip, ensuring wrist maintains correct position.

Exercise 3: Wall Position

  • Position right arm to a wall to prevent the elbow from going too far.
  • Helps maintain straight bow direction and smooth bow changes.

Additional Tips

  • Singing and Breathing: Often neglected but crucial.
    • Singing helps in imagining and producing the best phrase.
    • Breathing aids in physiological regulation during bow changes.
    • Exhale during the bow change at the Frog for assistance.
  • A stable and flexible bow hold is fundamental; refer to Franco Belgian School bow hold basics for further study.
