Overview of Virginia Satir’s Treatment Conceptualization

  • Six-Stage Model of Change**: Based on cybernetic systems and humanistic principles.
    • Cybernetic Systems: Systems using homeostasis and self-correction to achieve balance.
    • Perturbing the System: Introducing a foreign element to shake up the system, like a snow globe.
  • Process:
    1. Assess the status quo (family system or individual).
    2. Introduce a foreign element (intervention, reframe, emotional experiencing).
    3. Create chaos, leading to new behaviors.
    4. Integrate and practice new possibilities.
    5. Establish new homeostasis.**

Therapeutic Relationship Satir's Presence: Genuine, hopeful, enthusiastic, and loving.

  • Authenticity:Being fully oneself in the therapeutic setting.
  • Congruence:Authentic presence fosters safer and faster treatment progression.
  • Empathy:Not about taking sides, but addressing inconsistencies with kindness.

Case Conceptualization in Satir Therapy

  • Family Functioning:
    • Role of symptoms in maintaining homeostasis.
    • Dynamics (power struggles, parental conflict, validation issues).
    • Family roles (martyr, victim, rescuer, good/bad parent/child).
    • Family Life Chronology: Mapping major life events.
    • Survival Triad: Child's relationship with each parent.
  • Individual Functioning:
    • Six Levels of Experience (Iceberg Model): Behavior, coping, feelings, perceptions, expectations, yearnings.
    • Self-worth and self-esteem assessment.

Goal Setting in Satir Approach

  • Humanistic Goals: Growth, fulfilling potential, individual and family needs.
  • Relational Goals: Congruent communication, new homeostasis.
  • Individual Goals:Self-actualization, self-worth, reduced defensiveness.

Interventions and Techniques
