Professional Appearance for Legal Interviews

well when you're working for the attorney general's office you are not only representing yourself as an attorney but you are represented an elected public official and you know i want you to present your best possible face on behalf of richard cordray that you can well they tease me at the office that i sometimes tend to be the fashion police with people but i do like to see somebody come in you know it doesn't have to be an expensive suit a nice suit well pressed i seem to find that some of the candidates that come in to interview don't make use of their irons or a dry cleaner things like that you know hair need men pretty much well shaven we charge uh fees for for our work and i think it's important for our clients to know i can trust this person because they have dressed professionally they're presenting themselves well and i don't think there's a certain look or or a certain attribute we look for it's just being professional and understanding you're dressing for the occasion you're presenting yourself for the occasion and i think a lot of that each person has the discretion to choose how they want to present themselves but again that might be something you want to bounce off an older colleague a third year who may perhaps have already spent time as a summer clerk to ask them what particular firms or what the professional expectations are for for appearance great you should look professional i mean you want to convey confidence and trust and poise and the way you dress reflects that down to if you're a woman the makeup you wear uh and and and down to the perfume you put on or the cologne you wear i think at the end of the day in an interview you want to be remembered as being as looking professional but you don't necessarily want to be remembered for what you are wearing if someone if you stand out particularly because of what you are wearing that's probably not the reason you want to be remembered so look professional there's no rhyme or reason to it whether there's a particular color suit or tie you have to have on but just dress for success dress you know where your costume well projecting an air confidence both in the in the way that you present yourself verbally physically as well as the manner of dress is is really important and we certainly understand that students are know struggling with law school debt or undergrad debt and that not everybody's going to have the wardrobe that they may have you know 10 years out of law school but certainly fit an appearance is going to be you know clothing and appearance is going to be something that's taken into consideration you know well-roomed and somebody who demonstrates that they could inspire confidence just by walking into the room so we talk about appearance we're not just talking about our dress we're talking about our appearance and our confidence and our ability to communicate and convey a message within this 20-minute period of time
