Introduction

  • Misconception: Contrary to popular belief, earwigs do not crawl into human ears.
    • Origin of name: Myth associating them with crawling into ears, laying eggs, causing issues such as deafness or insanity.

Habitat and Environment

  • Found in diverse environments:
    • Temperate forests
    • Urban landscapes
  • Prefer moist and dark habitats:
    • Under rocks, logs, and mulch
    • Common urban locations: gardens, flower beds, damp crawl spaces, and basements.
  • Reproduction thrives in these environments.

Life Cycle

  • Metamorphosis Type: Incomplete metamorphosis
    • Stages: Egg → Nymph (resembles miniature adult) → Adult
  • Reproduction:
    • Females lay eggs in underground burrows or moist crevices.
    • Maternal care is provided until nymphs hatch.
    • Nymphs undergo several molts before reaching adulthood.
    • Adults reproduce, completing the cycle.
