Abdominopelvic Regions and Abdominal Quadrants

Purpose

  • Abdominopelvic regions and quadrants help locate organs and diagnose abdominal pain.

Nine Abdominopelvic Regions

  • Organized like a tic-tac-toe board.
  • Viewed from the anterior/front view. Right and left are in reference to the body's own sides.

Upper Regions

  1. Right Hypochondriac Region
    • Upper left corner (from the body's perspective).
  2. Epigastric Region
    • Upper center section.
  3. Left Hypochondriac Region
    • Upper right corner (from the body's perspective).

Middle Regions

  1. Right Lumbar Region
    • Middle left section (from the body's perspective).
  2. Umbilical Region
    • Center section.
  3. Left Lumbar Region
    • Middle right section (from the body's perspective).

Lower Regions

  1. Right Iliac Region
    • Lower left section (from the body's perspective).
  2. Hypogastric Region
    • Lower center area.
  3. Left Iliac Region
    • Lower right section (from the body's perspective).

Four Abdominal Quadrants

  • Simplified map preferred by many professionals.
  • Also viewed from the anterior perspective; named for the body's own sides.

Quadrants

  1. Right Upper Quadrant (RUQ)
  2. Left Upper Quadrant (LUQ)
  3. Right Lower Quadrant (RLQ)
  4. Left Lower Quadrant (LLQ)

Conclusion

  • Understanding these regions and quadrants is fundamental for medical professionals to effectively locate and diagnose issues within the abdomen.
