Chords, Segments, Arcs, and Sectors – Parts of a Circle
This lecture explains the key components of a circle: chords, segments, arcs, and sectors.
Chords
- Definition: A chord is a straight line connecting two points on the circumference of a circle.
- Function: Splits the circle into two parts.
Segments
- Definition: The parts into which a chord divides a circle.
- Types of Segments:
- Minor Segment: Smaller part of the circle.
- Major Segment: Larger part of the circle.
Arcs
- Definition: A section of the circumference of a circle.
- Types of Arcs:
- Minor Arc: Smaller section between two points on the circumference.
- Major Arc: Larger section between two points on the circumference.
Sectors
- Definition: A section of a circle, similar to a slice of pizza or cake.
- Components:
- Involves two radii going from the center to the circumference, connected by an arc.
- Types of Sectors:
- Minor Sector: Bounded by two radii and the minor arc.
- Major Sector: Bounded by the same two radii and the major arc.
Summary
- Two Ways to Cut a Circle:
- With a Chord: Results in a minor segment and a major segment.
- With Radii (Sectors): Results in a minor sector and a major sector.
- Arcs in Both Cases:
- A minor arc and a major arc are formed in both instances.
