Types of Mixtures

Introduction

  • Lesson objective: Understanding types of mixtures.
  • Classifying mixtures into homogeneous and heterogeneous.

Homogeneous and Heterogeneous Mixtures

  • Homogeneous mixtures: Difficult to differentiate their parts by sight alone.
    • Example: Clay with sand.
  • Heterogeneous mixtures: Different parts can be seen.
    • Other techniques are needed to identify them.
    • Example: Sand and water.

Types of Heterogeneous Mixtures

  • Suspensions:
    • Particles settle to the bottom if not stirred.
    • Example: Sand in water.

Properties of Mixtures

  • Flow of solids like liquids:
    • Toothpaste as one of the examples.

Particles and Their Motion

  • Medium-sized particles:
    • Do not settle to the bottom.
    • Spread evenly in the mixture.
  • Attraction and repulsion between particles:
    • Continuous collision prevents particles from stopping their motion.

Identifying the Type of Mixture

  • Milk mixture:
    • Appears homogeneous but is heterogeneous.
    • Use light to determine uniformity.
    • Tyndall light experiment: Place the mixture in a cup and observe light scattering.

Solutions

  • Water as a common solvent:
    • Most solutions contain water.
    • Example: Air as a gaseous solution.
  • Solvent and solute:
    • Nitrogen as a solvent in air.
    • Light scattering shows the quality of the solution.

Final Notes

  • Examples of mixtures are on page 308 of the book.
