Grasshopper Lesson: Writing a Complete Sentence

Introduction

  • Objective: Learn and practice how to write a complete sentence.
  • Definition: A sentence is a group of words that expresses a complete thought.
  • Example: "The dog runs."

Four Parts of a Basic Sentence

  1. Capital Letter

    • The first word in a sentence starts with a capital letter to indicate a new sentence is starting.
    • Example: "The" in "The dog runs."
    • Activity: Identify if sentences have capitalized beginnings.
      • "the dog wags her tail" (No capital)
      • "My grasshopper eats flies" (Yes, capital "M")
  2. Subject

    • Tells us who or what the sentence is about. It can be a person, place, or thing.
    • Example: "The boy" in "The boy swims."
    • Activity: Determine if sentences have a clear subject.
      • "Walk fast" (No subject)
      • "The boy swims" (Yes, subject is "the boy")
  3. Verb

    • Indicates what the subject is doing. Includes action verbs and helping verbs (e.g., is, are, was, has, have).
    • Example: "Runs" in "The dog runs."
    • Activity: Identify verbs in sentences.
      • "We are here" (Yes, "are" is a helping verb)
      • "Sam's cat" (No verb)
  4. Punctuation

    • A sentence ends with punctuation: period, question mark, or exclamation mark.
    • Example: Period at the end of "The girl jumps."
    • Activity: Check if sentences have punctuation.
      • "I eat ice cream" (No punctuation)
      • "He scored a goal!" (Yes, exclamation mark)
