How to Administer Ear Drops

Purpose of Ear Drops

  • Prescribed for ear infections
  • Used if there's a hole in the eardrum
  • Necessary for children with tubes in their ears

Dosage and Frequency

  • Typically prescribed as 5 drops
  • Administered twice a day
  • Usually for a duration of 5 days
  • Applied to both ears, especially after tubes are placed

Steps for Administering Ear Drops

  1. Prepare the Ear
    • Gently pull the ear back
    • Straightens the ear canal for better access
  2. Administer the Drops
    • Use a dropper bottle with a nozzle
    • Nozzle does not need to go all the way into the ear
    • Administer 5 drops
  3. Facilitate Drop Movement
    • Push on the ear slightly (one, two, three)
    • Helps the drops move down towards the eardrum

Tips

  • Pushing on the ear is easier than keeping a child still for a long time
  • Follow the same procedure for both ears if both have tubes

Note

  • It may be difficult to keep children still; using the push method can help ensure the medication reaches the eardrum efficiently.
