Exploring the Amerasian Homecoming Act

Now, controversies occurred over what to do with the children of U.S. soldiers in Asia who had been abandoned. And these children were living in squalor and destitution. So there was a groundswell of support in the United States, and especially from those who had the children. And in it, there was an act that was passed called the American Homecoming Act. or the Amerasian Homecoming Act. It was an act of Congress that gave preferential immigration status to children in Vietnam that were born of U.S. fathers. An important news source writes that the American Homecoming Act was written in 1987, passed in 1988, and implemented in 1989, and the act increased Vietnamese Amerasian immigration to the United States because it allowed applicants to establish a mixed race identity by appearance alone. Now additionally, the American Homecoming Act allowed the Amerasian children and their immediate relatives to receive refugee benefits. So about 23,000 Amerasians. 67,000 of their relatives entered the United States under this act. So while the American Homecoming Act was the most successful program in moving Vietnamese children of American fathers to the United States, the act was not the first attempt by the U.S. government. And additionally, the act experienced flaws and controversies over the refugees that it did allow entrance to. But it did not include most everyone because it allowed only Vietnamese Asian children of white American fathers opposed to other Southeast Asian nations in which the United States also had forces in the war and soldiers having children in other areas. So there is a documentary that follows this on the impact of the act on the children. Then three film clips are going to follow this act. And please become familiar with the murder of Vincent Chee. This is very significant in the Asian community. The anti-Asian hate that we see today is not something new. It's always been around. So take a look at... Murder Vincent Chin, that's the picture on the left. You see these three pictures, the one on the left. Then there is the picture of Wen Ho Lee. And that's where I wore the shirt after Wen Ho Lee. Again, he was falsely accused of espionage. That's the picture that's up on top. You'll see he's written a book about his experience, about his imprisonment, and then the trial. of Wen Ho Lee. It was a contemporary... That becomes important. And then you're going to finally view two more film clips. One was a contemporary interpretation of the current migration of Chinese... of the Chinese students to the United States. And then finally, we will conclude these presentations with Asian hate, and this Asian hate that was unleashed by Donald Trump's propagandistic blame of COVID on the Chinese. So hopefully you will enjoy this unit. Thank you.
