Steps to Construct a Pie Chart

Preparation

  1. Frequency Table: Favorite Animals

    • Dog: 20 people
    • Cat: 16 people
    • Elephant: 9 people
    • Tiger: 26 people
    • Snake: 1 person
  2. Total Number of People: 72

  3. Total Angle: 360 degrees

Calculating Angles

  1. Degrees per Person:

    • Calculate by dividing the total degrees (360) by the total number of people (72)
    • 360 / 72 = 5 degrees per person
  2. Frequency to Angle Conversion: Multiply each frequency by 5 degrees

    • Dog (20 people): 20 x 5 = 100 degrees
    • Cat (16 people): 16 x 5 = 80 degrees
    • Elephant (9 people): 9 x 5 = 45 degrees
    • Tiger (26 people): 26 x 5 = 130 degrees
    • Snake (1 person): 1 x 5 = 5 degrees
  3. Verification:

    • Sum of all angles should be 360 degrees

Drawing the Pie Chart

  1. Start with a Vertical Line: Draw a straight line from the center going up
  2. Draw each Wedge: Use a protractor to measure and draw each angle starting from the initial vertical line
    • Dog: 100 degrees
    • Cat: 80 degrees
    • Elephant: 45 degrees
    • Tiger: 130 degrees
    • Snake: 5 degrees

Final Touches

  1. Erase Angle Markings: Clean up by erasing unnecessary angle markers

  2. Label Wedges: Optional

  3. Create a Key: Essential

    • Use different colors for each category
    • Include a labeled box beside the chart
  4. Add a Title:

    • Descriptive of the chart's content
    • Example: "People's Favorite Animals"
