e namaskar and a very warm welcome I'm Jal tendon with you and you are watching us on our official YouTube channel that is ncrt official and you are watching us on um our EV viya channel number 6 to1 today we are here with yet another live session of our online training program that is digital wellness and it is the day two of our online online training program and today's topic is factors that impact digital wellness and as we all know that uh digitalization is a uh digitalization has its positive and negative effects and if you have any queries regarding the topic so you can just drop your queries or your questions or opinions in our YouTube chat box we have Dr Shrea with us today in our studio welcome Dr Shrea and uh I hope that uh uh you will definitely just put some light on today's topic Dr Shia as we all know that excessive internet usage can be uh you know uh increase the psychological arousals and this can result in less sleep insufficient food habits so what all are the problematic signs in the U if you say ke um in the use of digital digitalization uh these days everybody has uh some of the other access to some of the other digital apps for instance everybody has a mobile phone you cannot even think that you could live without a mobile phone and I believe that is for every one of us we cannot even think of living without a mobile phone if we have lost our mobile that becomes a source of stress for us so this day-to-day use so much use of digital uh technology has definitely led to an increase in our stress levels uh especially with increased access to social media one is defin constantly comparing ourselves with the others that uh the Glamorous Life that is shown on digital media on social media platforms that leads to an increase in stress especially amongst uh Children and adolescents who are uh going through that development developing age who are very prone to low self-esteem and these issues so it becomes very important for us as care providers as doctors teachers parents to be very well aware Ware of the bad impacts that digital technology that excess use of this technology can have on us so I believe I'll be discussing that in great detail today in today's session that is on factors that impact digital Wellness okay so so we are already uh Dr sha and uh I hope uh you have got a PP with you so that we can understand the topic more clearly yes yeah so uh starting with factors that uh impact digital Wellness starting with the contents today I'll be covering what is the concept the basic concept of well-being concept of digital well-being and why in today's day and age should we be concerned that uh about digital well-being factors that impact digital Wellness what are the risk and protective factors and how much digital use is too much should we completely ban all these media or should there should be a moderation in usage and how can we maintain a healthy social media relationship in today's day and age so moving to what is well-being well-being is a positive state that is experienced by individuals and society as a whole it is determined by the social uh arena for instance your uh friend Circle your family economic such as uh the financial this thing and environmental conditions well-being includes the quality of life like and how much you you are at peace with where you are in life your meaning and purpose in life it is characterized not only by good physical health but also a uh sense of happiness and satisfaction with life uh these are the basic Dimensions of Wellness of optimal uh well-being which include the social Arena emotional well-being physical nutritional technological environmental mental and psychological which we'll be discussing briefly over the next few uh slides social factors for instance man is a social being one cannot live without uh social relationships for instance family or friends so the relationships we maintain and hold with others they are a significant key to our overall health how we interact with people has a positive impact negative interaction can also have a negative impact on our well-being and uh for an attitude of care and concern for each other leads to a positive uh well uh sense of connectedness and well-being now coming to emotional factors uh emotional factors would mean recognizing the way we feel for instance if I'm feeling unhappy today or I'm feeling sad today so regulating these emotions can offer insight into situations and experiences that we encounter so moving to physical factors Health not only comprises physical well-being but as wh says it is a complete sense of physical mental and social well-being but physical Factor also makes a very important part of it uh how much you exercise is of course best suited to you but some amount of physical activity is definitely essential for a holistic uh development development yeah coming to nutritional factors of course uh the nutritionally balanced diet is definitely very important for uh well-being and so are the environmental factors for instance one uh there are things like uh seasonal depression for instance in uh the winter season when you do not move out much when there is uh no sun at that time one feels blues for instance a lot of people when it's raining heavily on a lot of days you feel Blues so that is why sunlight is important that is why fresh air is important so environmental factors also play a huge role in our day-to-day life and so are the technological factors which we'll be covering detail today so the amount of time we spend on digital devices depends on a lot of factors and they impact well-being like on social media platforms a lot of our interaction goes on social media platforms and uh being consciously aware of the kind of Articles one is reading on the kind of work one is doing on digital media plays a very important role in our well-being so is our psychological well-being how is your self-esteem how confident you are how do you perceive yourself to be a very positive person do you have an awareness of your surroundings and is that uh positive so psychological well-being is also a very important part similarly mental well-being for these days depression uh psychosis anxiety stress these things are a very important definitely OCD these part these things are a very uh because of the awareness these days that is on Mental Health everybody has to know about uh stress anxiety and everything after covid all this has uh everybody knows about these things uh sleep uh disorders disorders and these things so mental health is also a very important part of our overall well-being psychological well-being one has to be in a good uh relationship with self physical exercise nutrition personal sense of growth accomplishment all that leads to a good psychological uh Health now giving you an introduction of digital well-being digital well-being is a term that is used to describe the impact of Technologies and Digital Services on people's mental physical social and emotional health now as we know that since 2020 uh after the covid-19 pandemic there has been an a rapid increase in remote learning the use of digital media and platforms for our students they have changed the way they have seen technology and so have we as teachers and care providers and as parents we have like grown from not having a mobile phone to having screens in front of us probably 18 hours a day this definitely helps this definitely impacts our well-being in ways that we cannot even fathom H students as well as staff has had to navigate a lot of uh difficult climate where we we've had to learn how to access YouTube and different platforms make uh learning exercises for uh children so that they can access on their phones and laptops now now that schools have returned to regular practice but technology definitely continues to be used more than ever students in particular they can have a very active online life from a very young age now everybody has access to iPads because of the rise in uh online classes so they have a very active online life which probably the teachers and parents cannot all the time Monitor and that impacts of course sometimes positively if used well however it can also impact them negatively it changes and shapes and impacts their digital well-being so coming to why should we be concerned uh see a growing portion proportion of children and adolesent Leisure Time is spent with screens including on smartphones tablets gaming consoles and televisions now adolesence is a very uh is the period between puberty and adult Independence in this period The Adolescents are not too naive and they're not adult too and they actively are developing their personalities their self-esteem is at their lowest they are very fragile at this time they have this High risk-taking Behavior they crave for Independence however they cannot be completely independent as well their General levels of life life satisfaction and self-esteem even drops to the lowest it is the uh it is scientifically proven at the same time media's use is increasing at the same time and it reaches its first peak in the late adolescence that means in the classes maybe 9th to 12th so adolesence are much more likely than younger children to have their own smartphone which allows the uh use of Technology especially unmonitored in every setting this may increase the possibility of internet addiction excessive gaming problematic social media use which has been linked to low well-being not only for themselves but also some adolescent some adults do engage in cyber bullying and other aspects that we learn further that affects other person's well-being as well High user screen is also seen uh to display much more poor or emotional regulation for instance not staying calm or arguing to too much or being difficult to get along with being very irritable very impulsive these things are also seen with uh people who use screen for a high dur long duration of time they also are unable to finish tasks lower their uh it lowers their curiosity and they since most of their friends are online they are engaging in uh social relationships online so having and fostering physical relationships in the real world becomes much more difficult for them and uh not having real relationships is a problem definitely smartphones also has seen has been seen to replace face- to-face social interactions for instance uh parents must be facing this a lot that they are talking to their child but the child is on his mobile phone not listening to the parent smartphones have found their way into our dining tables onto our uh uh drawing rooms into our living rooms and they are there to stay so this definitely has an impact on their academic performance but the impact that is there on their holistic social well-being psychological well-being uh has to be seen and how we can uh how we can read what are the factors how we can determine uh when to intervene when to see that okay this is becoming problematic now we must seek help or we must do something about it as teachers and parents becomes very important and uh even in the uh as you are talking about the Adolescent age but uh if we see uh the behav behavior of toddlers as well uh parents are working and the uh the the kids are with the grandparents they sometimes they the kids get really irritable so what the grandparents do they give the mobile phone or the tablets to the kid so this can lead to Virtual autism as well I guess definitely definitely it has been seen in my clinical practice as well that after covid because Co was such a difficult time for parents and us so uh the parents were had given mobile phones or uh TV screens to the children and after covid ended around after a year or so we had a lot of Rush of uh parents coming in with toddlers saying that there they had seen a regression in the Milestones the child had already started talking but uh for the past one year he had regressed to using only one or two words he had started pointing so uh he would not speak words he would not make eye contact he would not eat without mobile phones so that such was the impact of screens at that point in time so that was when people started realizing that no it's not all good it's not all hunky dory you just cannot keep on watching uh good videos on YouTube and ignore the impact ignore the harmful impact it also has because it is just one way communication definitely children uh to grow and develop require two-way communication like a mother talking to a child that is how the child devel speech by seeing imitating of course neurod developmental age does matter as the child grows up he'll be able to learn much more but seeing imitating those things two-way communication is a much more important uh factor in development not only of children but in adults as well how long can you watch a TV screen and uh feel good so uh Dr sha is that the reason uh that parents are uh uh giving admission to the children in at an very early AG in schools because uh at in our times the the admission age used to be 3 or 4 years but now it has come to two years as well yeah definitely it has that is why it is important for children to mingle with people uh mingle with similar aged children in their surroundings in our times it was much more popular to uh you know play outside but now children are not uh parents are not in fact theet in fact the society we live in there are not so many children who are playing outside there are much more children who are seeing TV screens so definitely it is important uh for children to have a cognitively stimulating kind of environment children adults adolesence everybody so uh you can continue with your pptn yes so what are the categories of risks that adolesence and children are exposed to when they use social uh digital media or social media first would be content risks like adolescent is a very uh naive kind of age they can engage with or they are exposed to potentially harmful content for instance violent material pornographic material discriminatory uh material or hateful material such uh for in instance uh you must have read about uh this blue whale phenomenon a while back yes uh children were adolesence and children were uh engaging with such kind of uh things on the social media and they were uh trying to imitate it and a lot of children did uh have harmful consequences because of uh that kind of challenge all that was propagated uh and by the social media itself so uh other extremist information and harmful body image norms for instance there was this uh concern about being excessively thin a while back so all those things are something that the Adolescent mind captures very quickly and they are they'll change their way of thinking and they change they'll change their way of life because of what everybody says plus we do not want children like 13 14 years of age having access to pornographic material do we so this this is a kind of risk content risk that uh we face with our children now coming to contact risks like social media everybody is behind a screen you can have have a 40-year-old person uh claiming to be a 12 year-old person and Forge a relationship with your adolescent do you really want that they can that can uh like result in harmful uh adult contact resulting in uh harassment unwanted surveillance sexual abuse and a lot of other stuff so we do not want our children to be our children or ourselves also as uh adults uh to be in contact with such people who uh do not have our best best interests at heart but we do not know who is behind the screen so that is another uh risk now coming to conduct risk now adolesence a lot of times now we see Instagram has started having Waring for contents right or Facebook has started having Waring for contents why is that because concerns were raised that adolescence and other people can witness uh violent events and other events of bullying harassment on online social media so harmful peer contact and hostile communication peer activity all these things were taken into account and that is why now we have this uh warning for content on social media now coming to contract risks adolescents are very uh can be easily exploited to uh harmful contracts such as identity theft fraud online scams anybody can get access to uh the parents uh banking details and everything through adolescence adolesence are very very easily blackmailed as well so these things are what is causing a problem in the social media in the social space uh otherwise we also have privacy violations these days uh cyber security these things have been uh emphasized on time and again so these things have to be kept in mind that uh our adolescence are at risk so how does digital space affect well-being so coming to emotional health the thing with digital media is that it gives access to so much so much content and we actually do so little we just tend to see each other's lives from a length they want us to view with somebody might be struggling with a lot but he's just showing the hunky dory good details of their lives so we always tend to think that okay this person uh this yes he's living the best life of his time and look at I'm at such a bad space so this gives rise to a lot of negative emotions it unnecessarily GL glamorizes the other person's life and we feel small in front of them and that is not how we want our ourselves to be feeling not just our children we also feel the same that this person was with us and now he's like roaming here and there and doing all these good things maybe he's not maybe he's struggling in something else also and that part of his life that person is not showing so at the same time online uh platforms has also enabled people to reach out for help for instance during covid we utilized uh video calling we utilized Facebook we utilized Instagram to be in touch with the outside world without since we were not allowed to go outside so at that time it really did help but now that everything is back to normal we are still stuck in that yes that has become a habit yeah yes that has become a habit which is definitely impacting our emotional health so watching entertaining content can definitely make you laugh but for how long can you go on watching it while reading hostile comments on Instagram or Facebook is definitely going to make you feel uh low and angry so what are the posit uh possible examples of having a like of digital this thing having a negative impact on you uh emphasizes once it leads you to compare yourself to others and for those of us or ad other adolescents young adults who are using dating apps they can also it can also be detrimental to a person's digital well-being these these like swiping right swiping left that definitely impacts your body image and self-esteem and people are constantly swiping left and right judging you based just on your looks and nothing else so it can definitely Le lead to feelings of insecurity and anxiety now what positive impact can it has Can it have you can seek out help on uh different social media like for instance this uh thing on YouTube now you have access to this through digital media so this is one of the positive impacts that creating awareness becomes easy through social media connecting with other people who are like-minded it BEC definitely now what is what impact does it have on your psychological well-being have you ever felt that you cannot locate your phone you do not have any work with your phone but you just Panic okay where did my phone go you have no need for your phone at that time or you are sitting in a meeting you're constantly checking your phone you're not doing anything just your phone is UN silent you're scrolling mindlessly through Facebook and Instagram you were just bored but we used to be bored around 10 years back as well but we had found some creative ways to utilize our boredom and it was fine for us not to be stimulated for a while with all the energy bombardment that is happening through the social media if this thing has become an automatic ISM that you just pick up your phone open your insta and you are scrolling or open your YouTube you're watching shorts mindlessly then that has become a problem mostly it gives you a false sense of connection for people who are living alone however the kind of importance one is giving to social media it makes you disconnected from The Real World now negative impact it does encourage addictive behaviors it compromises Online safety and promotes feelings of self uh worth it decreases your self-esteem as well there is also a direct relationship between screen time and insufficient sleep and psychological stress that has been proven for quite some time in different scientific studies wandering of mind there is difficulty in sustaining attention we used to be able to sit for so long in classes but after uh Instagram and uh Facebook I believe we have become used to that 5 minutes of real 2 minutes of real or 30 seconds of real it has become difficult for us to uh loc uh to sustain attention for long periods of time however and also negative thinking styles are developed life satisfaction is decreased because you're just seeing everybody lead their glamorous life and you're the only one who's leading normal everyday uh Dal chavel life so true so uh you are watching us on our official YouTube channel that is NCR official and on EV viya channel number 6 to1 today we are talking about the factors that impact the uh digital wellness and we have Dr shria Shukla with us today in our Studios I'm getting uh so many messages from your sides in our uh YouTube chat box and people are really liking today's topic Dr sh and they are really appreciating uh so Dr sh uh here I want to know uh what are the other factors that are impacting our life in in today's world because we are here in a rat race and as you said that U we are just living somebody somebody's else's life or we are just Envy from their life so what are the other factors apart from social media yes definitely these days uh like I believe if we go around 20 years back we were living a more relaxed life nobody was hustling this hustle culture that has been brought in that uh this hustle culture that has been brought in is also very harmful all the time you are like doing something or the other wanting to improve definitely that is a very good thing but taking a step back and relaxing giving your mental health importance that also becomes very important in today's life and this hustle culture has been brought on by social media itself so what is next in your PP so next I'll be talking about uh a few addictive behaviors that we have with respect to the social media for instance uh we have this zero inbox syndrome what is zero inbox syndrome the moment you have a notification from Gmail or from WhatsApp you have to check it even if you know that is from somebody whom you do do not ever talk to but you have to check it you have to if it is Spam yeah even if it is spam you have to just mark it as red so that is zero inbox syndrome something known as Phantom vibration syndrome you're sitting nicely doing doing your work and you feel that your phone is vibrating but it is not right these days there is also this culture of uh binge watching you are watching 10 10 hours 13 hours of one TV series so that is also not good for you right uh then fabbing fabbing is something that you are paying more uh for instance you are paying more importance to what is going on your digital social media than people around you online for instance like today's youngsters we see we are having a din dinner table conversation but they are busy on their mobile phones right so that is fabbing nomophobia is the phobia of being away from your mobile phone for some time right so these are some things that we are moving towards addictive behaviors right so uh otherwise misinformation that is propagated by social media early exposure to pornographic material also causes a detrimental impact for psychological well-being however being a part of a group creating a sense of belonging that are these are some things that uh digital media does help us with but of course too much of everything is harmful now moving on to social health uh digital media of course we have discussed it in detail that it helps connection and Discovery however and it also gives access to endless educational and practical resources like you want something you want to learn something new it's there on YouTube it's there on different uh resources right it's there on uh ncrt sources some of the other teacher has put something online that you'll be able to learn better however what to filter out that has also become a problem right for instance uh now these days uh youngsters engage in a lot of cyber bullying uh like you put a photograph online and people will be kind of roasting you for different your uh Behavior or your looks so bullying online has become a very uh a very common thing and that impacts your uh mental health uh being a victim of cyber stalking cyber grooming however positive impacts can be preventing isolation connecting with family and friends enabling participation in something that you believe in common platform that sort of thing it does help with now it also has a uh very detrimental impact on physical health like being sedentary now you are spending 10 hours in front of the screen where is the time to go and walk for a while right so earlier we used to have this term Couch Potato that is what is happening these days you sitting in front of the TV you're sitting in front of your OT platforms and in the name of relaxing you're spending tens of hours in front of that screen however we do not know that these uh screens the blue light that is emitted by these screens that has a harmful impact on our eyes you feel stressed you feel uh it causes sleep disturbance right uh it uh causes uh sleep your sleep pattern changes right neck pain the posture the those people who are on uh who work continuously on uh laptops and they have a lot of problems with posture neck pain Etc so it does have an impact on your physical health however you can use these resources to improve your physical health as well there are a number of uh things that are available there are a number of medical uh videos and physical health videos that are available so when should we be concerned how much is too much like of course we have talked that it can have positive positive impact as well so coming to how much is too much so like if you feel symptoms of eye strain including watering of eyes redness of eyes aching blur division dry eyes so these are symptoms that you have sat in front of your screen for quite long now you should take a break should go and take a walk yes so second point would be you are spending more time in communicating with your online friends than you are with friends who are present there who are your colleagues who are your uh work friends or your family you are ignoring people who are present to be in company of people who are not there right so that is a red flag sign you might also feel anxious when you're not having access to your mobile phone if you kind of uninstall these apps that you're having and you feel anxious okay I'm not able to access I'm not able to see what Facebook comes up with next or Instagram comes up with next that that technology is causing a problem now feeling overwhelmed and stressed because of information overload now once uh these days we have a lot of channels on parenting so one uh influencer would say something other influencer would say something so everybody would say something different you have too much your and you do not know who to trust because half of the influencers might or might not be qualified enough to give you that information so you could feel overwhelmed influen can be paid definitely paid influencers as well so you could feel overwhelmed and stress because of so much information that the social media is giving you and you do not know how to make head or tails of it you find yourself comparing to others a lot that others are uh at a better position in their life physically and financially you are comparing yourself a lot and that is why you are feeling stressed right also you have started having difficulty in sleeping you go to bed you scroll in the social media for an hour or so and then you lay down to sleep you're not able to sleep why because the blue light that has been that is being emitted by these screens is harmful for your neurons and that uh deters you from having a good night sleep you are having fewer to fewer face Toof face conversations with friends and family family you feel disconnected from people around you using the internet is preventing you from doing other work for instance we have we must be having a lot of parents on the platform who are saying that uh our child is on some of the other game for 10 hours in a day earlier way I believe we used to have uh this uh pubg and other kind of games that uh children used to be used to use very frequently and they would spend tens of hours till the time the phone would get discharged lapt would get discharged they would still fight for that right so and they would be ignoring even things like food bathing I believe a lot of parents would relate to that because we did have a lot of such patients in our clinical practice so using the internet is preventing you from doing your regular work for instance you have a something pending and you are procrastinating it just scrolling mindlessly on uh digital media right using the internet internet or social media is leading to feelings of being overwhelmed because of all the things the physical emotional psychological consequences so that is where you should think of drawing a line what are the uh risk factors there is something known as digital drama for instance you are you have posted something online and there is a lot of commenting going on in the comment section and you're fighting in the comment section somebody is saying this somebody saying that so that sort of digital drama if you are engaging in that is Pro that that definitely causes negative uh feelings of negative Health right also the desire to fit in then distressing content such as threats bullying and harassment people impersonating you somebody has made another uh social media handle with your name right uh unwanted sexual advances violent content pornographic content everybody has uh I believe gone through this whatever age that person might be and one must must be uh aware that our adolescen are also prone to such kind of this thing also screen time 10 hours 12 hours of screen time how is that going to be healthy right now what are the productive factors there is something known as digital resilience which is the skill set that we give to our children from uh since they are growing throughout their childhood what uh they this includes coping strategies for in like uh somebody say is saying something negative to them how can they cope up with that right how to recover from any small or big trauma learning from online Hazard such as once or twice uh some kind of cyber security incident happens how to learn from that these are things that we also need to teach in our children these days because of the because they have so much access to social media and digital media it digit digital teaching children digital resilience it acts as a protective factor for adolescent well-beings and it Shield them from Pro potential online risks adolescent digital resilience can be boosted via through individuals family and school even parents and school both can uh go through this handin hand and teach uh our adolescence uh digital resilience also it has been seen that involvement in extracurricular activities has been seen to uh reduce unnecessary digital news and uh increasing screen time all that is put to RK rest when uh children are involved in other uh extra curricular activities uh now parental involvement how much parents are involved see uh if the parents are also sitting and uh scrolling social media that is the kind of message that goes along to the child children also learn through uh you know social learning and mimicking so if one is too much involved in the digital media uh definitely your child is at risk parental involvement how much involved you are in your child's overall well-being what is he doing at school what is he not doing at school what is he learning or not so parental involvement can lead to a better relationship with the digital media uh better quality of family relationships also seem to be associated with less problematic use of the internet so digital Wellness has main six pillars that includes physical health you have to protect your eyes sleep right uh promote physical activity then mental health you have to prioritize self worth not just compare yourself with others and feel low you know uh take a battering on your self-esteem no building resilience now spiritual health social health for instance strengthen your relationship with ourselves and others around us intellectual Health like what can we learn from the social media what productive can we learn from the social media and definitely privacy and and safety are the very important uh six pillars of digital Wellness how can we go on maintaining a healthy relationship with social media so knowing how you use social media and it's and its impact on your digital well-being is important a lot of us uh children or adolescents wouldn't even know that what are we what we are doing is actually problematic adults have started recognizing this because of course we are more cognitive more mindful children are not so so knowing is the first step to uh you know preventing this thing and maintaining a healthy relationship with digital media so first would be be mindful of the time you are spending on social media you have to try to limit yourself to a certain number of minutes or hours per day now we have a lot of good uh apps for that as well iOS screen time we have to you know monitor how much of hours you are spending on the social media right then you be aware of the content you are consuming are you just mindlessly scrolling or you are seeing something productive and thirdly are you feeling good after seeing that content right make sure that the content you're seeing is uplifting and does not make you feel anxious or stressed now digital literacy so digital literacy is something that it is the ability of individuals to understand and use digital uh services for Meaningful actions for instance if you're learning something new and you want want some help with digital media well and good that is how you are uh embracing your digital literacy using it for a good purpose right then engaging with social media in a way that feels good for you if you are feeling overwhelmed take some time off that is what taking time off is known as these days it's known as digital detox take take some time off detox yourself from this thing that has been consume consuming your overall time and well-being right also one has to make sure that one keeps on connecting with people who are offline as well as online social media should not Encompass all of your life it should just be a part of your life it is not the only thing that is something that uh all of us need to be mindful of also if we are we think that it is becoming a problem talk to someone talk to someone there is help available definitely we have less psychiatrists than uh we would need but there is help available so talk to a professional if you feel that it is going out of hands now you need help so with increased Reliance on technology there also comes an increased need for good digital citizenship what is good digital citizenship how your actions online are not only affecting you and your reputation but also that of others if you are commenting negatively on somebody else's post definitely it's going to all that negativity is also you know going to come back to you so if each of us can be a good digital citizen I believe the cyber bullying the Cyber threats all that would come down to a minimum yes in the age of social media it's very easy to forget that anyone and everyone can see the things you post so it does have consequences on your reputation on what you want to be able to share online right so maintaining your privacy personal information personal content managing your digital footprint with ethical uh boundaries and professionalism good digital citizenship will benefit you in many ways keep your professional information safe and your privacy also safe to be a good digital citizenship you can protect your privacy by being careful of what you share by being careful of what you write right so all these things are a very important part of your digital well-being and being mindful of these things recognizing and uh if needed seeking professional help is very important at this juncture yes and uh there's a there's another very important question uh Dr sh I would like to ask uh what can teachers do to identify the problematic uh use of digital technology definitely so first of all teachers since uh I believe eight hours of a child's uh you know every day is spent in schools so teachers are also very important and recognizing these small things that a child might be going through for instance if you see a child who is constantly sleep deprived right there might be of course there might be something wrong at home or possibly he is using digital media excessively so at that time a teacher a counselor can intervene and see whether this child needs help if one can find signs of any kind of cyber bullying right teachers are sometimes very close to children so they can be very approachable so at that time intervening involving the family if the family is not understanding making them understand that is where teachers you know come through or uh identifying these risk factors and uh you know sending for professional help so that is where teachers can uh help since the child is in school for uh around onethird of the day yes so teachers can be a very key role they can be hands in hand with the professional with psychiatrists with uh medical professionals to help with this kind of stuff and as schools what can schools do you have to encourage appropriate device uh breakes away from devices for instance when we were having uh online classes we would be having maybe 5 6 hours of online classes but were we having any breaks in between are we designing our courses in such a way that the child gets 5 10 minutes of break away from the screen between each class are we doing that we should be right creating safe spaces for individuals to talk through concerns that is where teachers come through if a child is going through something difficult he should have access to counselors in school or uh you know class teachers with whom he can talk also encourage uh one should also engage uh parents to encourage the use of parental controls and filtering options for instance we have these options in all Ott platforms these days uh in all YouTube uh channels and I believe in Google Play uh as well where you can encourage the use of parental controls before installing anything you new before using anything new then uh appropriate offline activities in school schools these days we used to I believe physical activity has taken a toll after uh covid-19 so we should encourage extracurricular activities so that uh you know extracurricular definitely we have discussed that extracurricular activities decreases uh screen time and engagement in uh too much engagement in digital uh this thing yes also Trends uh teachers should also be AB breast of the popular Trends and apps for instance we were talking about that blue whale uh uh instance that happened a while ago so teachers can also be aware of what is happening around so that they can catch these early warning signs that uh you know children are talking about uh doing that uh stuff so you can catch it in time and you know seek help engage family members as well explaining why harmful content what harmful content is and why is it wrong not only to adolescence but also to adults to their parents that they need to be mindful of what their child is consuming during the day consuming when they are giving him uh iPads and phones for uh regular use so that would be all from my side okay and uh uh what is what is the role of the parents parents also play a very important role in controlling in uh rather not controlling monitoring what children use in digital media platforms so uh sometimes the parents give the children iPads and laptops as it is without any parental uh guidance however one must be mindful of what the child is watching these days there are popup ads that can you know throw you into a uh spiral of different cyber security issues or uh pornography there are different popup ads on the mobile phone different games so the uh parent has to be mindful of what the child is consuming the parent also has to set a good uh example by not engaging in excess media activity himself if you are constantly on your phone or on your laptop the child will definitely through social learning the child will definitely do the same he idolizes his parents and he'll definitely do the same so you have to set a good example for your child you have to set limits you have to be mindful of what he's seeing or what he's not seeing right and uh liit setting limit setting also becomes very important after a while that the child should not use you know mobile phone or TV for half an for more than half an hour or 45 minutes or even if you know School activity is going on on social media then after about 45 to uh an hour the the person should have a break of 5 10 minutes that sort of thing the parents can do at their end and if they see that the child is uh you know engaging in behavior that is detrimental for instance 15 hours of pubg gaming or 15 hours of online gaming then definitely this kind of thing needs professional help and you must seek a psychiatrist's help in such a matter if the child is refusing to give up his uh mobile phone or laptops uh you know even after extended periods of use he's you know ignoring other activities for instance talking to you or uh you know studies so definitely you have to bring uh the child uh you know ask the child and the parents to seek professional help that is where the parents come into picture so this uh our uh class I believe uh would tell the parents the uh counselors and teachers how to deal with what we are going through in terms of digital uh engagement and digital media these days yes so thank you so much Dr sha uh for this informative session and uh I really think that uh this is this will
