Ir and Ser in Preterite Tense

Hola. As we continue with the preterite would be important to go over some of the irregular verbs. This will be starting the series on many videos of irregular verbs and the preterite. In this video, we'll learn how to change the verb ir and ser in the preterite. Let's start with ir. If you remember the verb ir means 'to go'. In the present tense... yo voy tú vas él va ella va usted va nosotros vamos nosotras vamos ellos van ellas van ustedes van In the past tense, the preterite, we have yo fui tú fuiste él fue ella fue usted fue nosotros fuimos nosotras fuimos ellos fueron ellas fueron ustedes fueron You can remember remember that "I went" on a roller coaster. FUIIII That's the yo form. Fui. I went. Now for ser 'to be'. The present tense is: yo soy tú eres él es ella es usted es nosotros somos nosotras somos ellos son ellas son ustedes son In the preterite, we have: yo fui tú fuiste él fue ella fue usted fue nosotros fuimos nosotras fuimos ellos fueron ellas fueron ustedes fueron Wait a second. Does that seem familiar? It's because it's the same as ir. So fui we could mean I went and also I was. Hmm... Fuiste could mean you went and also you were. Fue could mean he went, he was, she went, she was you formally went, you (formal) were. Fuimos could mean we went, we were. Fueron could mean they went, they were, you all went, you all were. Huh? So if you're concerned by this, the way we'll know the difference in the meaning is in the context or other words in the sentence. I'll give you some examples. Yo fui a la piscina el verano pasado. I went to the pool last summer. Nosotros fuimos a Guadalajara. We went to Guadalajara. El almuerzo fue delicioso. Lunch was delicious. La escuela fue aburrida. School was boring. OK, so for one, we notice that we have an a after the verb and so we know it is a form of went because we 'went to'. The following sentences are in the present tense, change them to the preterite. El baile es un desastre. El baile fue desastre. That would mean the dance was a disaster. Ser. Nosotros vamos al restaurante. Nosotros fuimos al restaurante. We went to the restaurant. Ellos van al campo. Ellos fueron al campo. They went to the countryside. Las pizzas son muy asquerosas. Las pizzas fueron muy asquerosas. The pizzas were disgusting. Elena es doctora. Elena fue doctora. Elena was a doctor. Pablo va al hospital. Pablo fue al hospital. Pablo went to the hospital. Yo soy profesor. Yo fui profesor. I was a teacher. OK. Now translate it from English to Spanish. Pause the video and check the word bank as needed. If you're not sure how to change the verbs to the preterite tense, you can look below this video. I went to the store. Yo fui a la tienda. Did you go to the gym? ¿Fuiste al gimnasio? The movie was a comedy. La película fue una comedia. Paco was a Spanish teacher. Paco fue profesor de español. We went home. Nosotros fuimos a casa. The girls went to the party. Las chicas fueron a la fiesta. It was difficult to dance. OK? Now if you haven't learned this in another video or previous video, whenever I say it is the subject OK, that's gonna be the he or she form of your verb. So it was difficult to dance would be, fue. That means it was, Fue difícil bailar. I hope this makes sense. Let me know if you have any questions, comments or suggestions about this video. Thanks for watching. ¡Gracias y fuiiii!
