[Music] our inspiration today is yayoi kusama she is a japanese artist she's a contemporary artist she works mostly with sculpture and installations so these rooms are installations that she's made for people to walk through she has pop art inspirations and she does work all over the world for our project today we're going to look at her pumpkins she does installations of pumpkins and they're really really interesting so we're gonna make our own yayoi kusama pumpkin today okay guys today we're making our plaster yayoi kusama pumpkins i'm really excited about these these are going to be really really cool so we have lots and lots and lots of plastic bags what you're going to do is you're going to start with one this one already has a few in there and you're going to fill it full of plastic bags and it kind of helps some of these are already in little balls it kind of helps if you let them be kind of puffy and kind of just you want them to be kind of puffy and big rather than in these little twists okay so we're filling one bag full of a bunch of bags [Music] okay and you kind of before you tie it closed you kind of want to see how full is it and how squishy is it when it's full you don't want it to be packed so fully you can't squish it in but you also don't want it to be too squishy or if you kind of push on it it dents in too much so i think maybe i need a little bit more before i tie my enclosed and you'll see why it's important how squishy it is in just a minute [Music] okay that feels pretty good let's try this so we'll set these ones off to the side tie it pretty tight so you don't want it to be loose up top and you can just tie it in a knot because we're never going to open this back up again okay and you can see it still still squishes down a little bit it's not like super rock solid okay then you're gonna use masking tape to make those indentions those like lines of your pumpkin okay so start with your masking tape we can start it right at the top and as you're pulling it around you kind of want to keep it tight because if you're not keeping it tight it's not going to make that indention that like pushed in line on your bags okay so you kind of have to be pulling it tight as you're pulling and then once you get back around to the top i kind of like to overlap that first piece of tape a little bit so it doesn't come undone overlap it okay so there's my first one don't squeeze it so tight that it's so pushed in right now we need to add two more tape lines so you're gonna have three total so i can't put it directly perpendicular to the first one because then it wouldn't really make sense so we're gonna kind of turn it this way here's my first line and then we'll put our last line about there okay so let me start that next one i'm going to start it right in the middle again and again i'm pulling tight as i'm pulling it around so we want it to make that indention there we go so you can see it made an indention here and there's an indention here okay and last but not least the one spot that doesn't have its lines across it is right here so we'll add our third line about there make sure you're pulling it tight again i like to overlap that first piece of tape a little bit so it sticks down really well the tape sticks to itself better than it sticks to the bag so that's why i like to do that okay so now i have my little pumpkin shape and if it's kind of like wonky that's okay because pumpkins are wonky but if you kind of want to like push it around a little bit until it's a little bit more how you want it that's totally fine okay there's my pumpkin now before we do our plaster we need to give him a stem okay so i'm just gonna pull off a piece of foil and i'm going to try to make this into a stem shape okay a stem should be kind of skinnier on the top a little bit wider on the bottom where it touches the pumpkin and you don't have to squeeze it real tight it doesn't have to be like a really compact ball of foil okay so that's kind of the shape i'm working with again it doesn't have to be perfect because real pumpkins aren't perfect they're kind of wonky so i kind of just flattened the bottom a little bit where it's going to attach to the pumpkin and then i'm going to get a piece of tape i'm going to kind of roll it in a messy little tape ball the messier the tape ball the better okay because if it's just a perfect little loop those don't tend to stick very well so i'm gonna put that on there okay and it doesn't have to be super perfectly adhered right it's just to hold it on there long enough for you to get your plaster strips around it okay so this is our first part so far i'm gonna flip it over grab a sharpie and on those tape lines you're gonna write your name and class code okay [Music] and try not to cover that up when you're doing your plaster all right we're not going to put plaster on the bottom anyway so just try to keep that so you can still read it all right let me set this stuff aside then what you're going to do is you're going to have plaster strips they look like this okay you can see it's kind of the plaster is on this netting and that's really great because what you're going to do is you're going to get your plaster strip wet and that netting holds that plaster together so then you can you know wrap it around your pumpkin okay so that's what that's for the netting and the plaster so i'll set this kind of off to the side you guys won't be able to see it very well but that's okay because i want you to be able to see what i'm doing you're gonna have buckets of water to get your plaster wet and your pumpkin okay so i'm gonna show you my first plaster strip we're going to get it wet don't get it too wet because then it'll be super super sloppy but you also can't have any dry pieces because then they won't be able to mold around your pumpkin so i've just laid my first piece on and i like to kind of it's a little bit wonky so you kind of have to push it into those creases and i like to kind of rub it down and you can see you can still see those little um holes that it's kind of in that netting you can kind of wait to do this part but i like to kind of smooth out those holes as the best as i can okay and this is kind of pushing up a little bit so i need to make sure it's laying flat as flat as possible so there's my first piece i can get my second piece you can see you kind of have to go quickly and this is definitely messy okay so just kind of prepare for that this is a messy part of this project okay you don't want to pull it too tight across my skin you don't want to pull it too tight across your pumpkin because then you won't be able to push it down in these lines okay make sure your edges are laying flat my stem that's kind of starting to fold up on me make sure you're laying it as flat as you can now it really is important that you're not overlapping other plaster strips that you've already put on there too much because we don't have very many of these plaster strips so you do have to be careful about how many of them you are using okay so going around the stem is a little bit tricky i'll probably have to put another plaster strip right there so maybe i'll just move this one over a little bit there we go if you need your fingers to be a little bit more wet to help lay down some pieces that's fine and it's okay if you feel like this is a little bit wobbly once your plaster dries it'll harden and that will not move around like that okay so so there we go i still have a little bit of open space right here so i'm gonna get another plaster strip for that [Music] okay that's looking pretty good and i did overlap a little bit on my plaster strips but not too much you kind of do have to overlap a little bit just so you're making sure that you're not um leaving any of that bag poking through okay so this is where i'm at right now the whole top of my pumpkin is laid down i wish this was a little flatter hold on you have a little bit of time before it fully dries i can get my fingers a little wet and kind of help it lay down flat there we go okay but you can see the sides still need plaster so here's what i want you to keep in mind when you set your pumpkin flat on the table we don't want to be able to see any of the bags showing through when you're all done with your plaster so i need to take my plaster down to about here right we're so any any bag that could possibly be showing if it's sitting flat if somebody's walking around it or when it's out on display we don't want any of the bag showing okay so basically where the flat part is of the bottom of your bag we're not putting any there but just about where it starts to roll up to the side that's where we're adding plaster the sides should be super easy a lot easier than the you know the stem okay so you can see right now there's like a hole because i stretched it a little too tight so make sure you're pushing it down in there and let's see if i can show you this see how this looks super textured because that um that netting is showing still so get your plaster strip where you want it lay down the edges and then i like to kind of go over that and smooth those little holes out as much as you can it's never going to be perfect but the paint can also fill some of those we just want to try to get as much as we can with our plaster okay let's do our next one try not to overlap the last one as best as you can all right and it looks like i need just about one last piece of one last strip of plaster make sure i'm covering absolutely everything oof that was a perfect size piece for the what i had left okay making sure it fits in those little dents okay now i'm just smoothing it out and you can see it comes down right about here but that bottom part of my pumpkin is flat we don't need to do the bottom because no one will ever see the bottom then if you see any spots that are kind of sticking up lay them flat get your fingers a little damp if you rub on pieces too much you can end up taking off too much of the plaster and then you'll just be left with that netting so you kind of have to know when to say when this is looking really good all right i think my plaster pumpkin is done so now we're going to let these dry until our next art class and we'll paint them next art class now
