[Music] in book 3 chapter 5 of 1984 Winston is taken underground to room 101 he's strapped into a chair we learned that room 101 is different for each person what happens in there is the worst thing that person can imagine for Winston that means rats O'Brien shows Winston a mask with two compartments Winston's face fits in one compartment and then there are two hungry sewer rats in the other the mask is coming closer to Winston terrified he calls out do it did Julia not me Julia Winston loses consciousness but he hears a sound a clinking of the cage door shutting not opening now to die with hatred and his heart meant freedom to Winston it meant holding onto his humanity and his love for Julia at the end of chapter 3 Winston was happy that he had not portrayed Julia O'Brien had agreed or so it appeared O'Brien must fully destroy any shred of humanity left in Winston and once that's complete and Winston betrays his lover it no longer matters if he lives or dies the party has triumphed [Music] you
