Introduction to Adobe InDesign
Welcome to our session on getting started with Adobe InDesign, focusing on the newest version. By the end of the session, you should be able to create a project similar to the one displayed on screen.
Starting a New Project
- Opening InDesign:
- Initial view shows recently opened files.
- Navigate to the top left to create a new file.
- File Setup:
- Default unit is picas, change to inches for familiarity.
- Standard letter size: 8.5 x 11 inches.
- Options available: portrait/landscape orientation, facing pages, starting page number, columns, gutters, and margins.
Navigating the Interface
- Moving the Page: Use space bar + mouse drag or alt/command + scroll wheel.
- Interface Layout:
- Left: Tools (Select, Direct Select, Zoom, Pan, Stroke, Fill).
- Top: Action bar (standard across Adobe products).
- Right: Quick access to tools (Page properties, Stroke, and Color).
Pages and Master Pages
- Creating/Managing Pages:
- Create a new page via the 'create a new page' icon.
- Facing pages create spreads.
- Options to duplicate, move, or delete pages.
- Master Pages:
- Allow consistent elements (e.g., logos) across multiple pages.
- Adjustments on master pages reflect on corresponding pages.
Using Layers
- Accessing Layers:
- Use Window > Layer to display layers.
- Dock layers in the quick access bar.
- Managing Layers:
- Create, delete, rename, and change color of layers.
- Organize elements (images, text) on separate layers.
- Lock layers to prevent changes.
Importing Images
- Using the Rectangle Frame Tool:
- Drag to allocate space for images.
- Drag and drop images into the frame.
- Image Fitting Options:
- Fit frame proportionally or fit content proportionally.
- Adjust image position by double-clicking to move within the frame.
- Direct Import: Drag images directly onto the page and adjust frame size.
Adding Text
- Creating Text Elements:
- Use the Typography tool for titles and body text.
- Adjust font type, size, spacing, and justification.
- Text Color and Stroke:
- Change text color to contrast with backgrounds.
- Optional stroke for text outlines.
Finalizing and Exporting
- Previewing: Use 'W' to toggle guide visibility.
- Exporting: File > Export to save your project.
