Crash Course Philosophy: Mind-Body Problem

Introduction

  • Lecture sponsored by Squarespace.
  • Story of Phineas Gage who survived an iron rod passing through his skull.
  • Incident led to significant personality changes, linking physical brain changes to personality shifts.

Main Philosophical Question

  • Where does our mind reside?

Reductive Physicalism

  • Definition: The view that the world is only made of physical stuff.
    • Bodies, brains, hormones, neurotransmitters explain all human features.
  • Incident with Phineas Gage supports this view.
  • Similar to psychiatric treatment: Change in brain chemistry affects mood.

Substance Dualism

  • Origin: Rene Descartes - Cogito ergo sum (I think, therefore, I am).
  • Belief in two types of substances: physical (matter) and mental (mind).
  • Interactionism: Mind and body interact within us.
    • Mental states can affect physical states and vice versa.
  • Challenge: Known as the Mind-Body Problem.
    • How can mind and body interact if they are different substances?

The Mind-Body Problem

  • Question of interaction between mental and physical substances.
  • Descartes’ solution was the pineal gland as a portal.
  • Modern philosophers struggle to solve this problem.

Epiphenomenalism

  • View: Physical states give rise to mental states; mental states don't affect physical states.

Mysterianism

  • Proponent: Colin McGinn.
  • Claim: Consciousness is unsolvable by human minds.
    • Brains are compartmentalized, unable to integrate subjective and objective knowledge.

Flash Philosophy: The Mary Thought Experiment

  • Proponent: Frank Jackson.
  • Scenario: Mary, a scientist, learns everything about color in a black and white room.
  • Question: Does she learn something new upon seeing color?
  • Argument Against Physicalism: Qualitative experience or qualia cannot be fully explained physically.
  • Physicalists counter that if physicalism is true, she learns nothing new.

Conclusion

  • The mind-body problem remains unsolved.
  • Physicalism hasn’t been definitively proven.
  • Open questions to consider:
    • Is the mind a separate substance?
    • Can human complexity be purely physical?
