Base Shape of the Gun in Maya

Introduction

  • Focus: Creating the base shape of a gun in Maya software.
  • Using reference images for accuracy.
  • Reference model: G Lock G 5
  • All process steps and resources (references) available in the course's first video.

Setting Up

Import Reference Image

  • Start in a fresh scene in Maya.
  • Use a 4-view layout.
  • Go to side view and import the reference image using the image plane icon.
  • Adjust the image in the Z axis behind the grid.
  • Turn on x-ray option from settings menu to see through the model.

Basic Shape Analysis

  • Identify the basic shapes (rectangles) in the gun model.
  • The main body of the gun is predominantly rectangular.

Modeling the Base Shape

Creating the Base Rectangle

  • Use a cube (cube tool) for the main body.
  • Adjust dimensions (width, depth, height) to fit the reference image.
  • Ensure alignment with the reference image.

Adding Edge Loops

  • Add edge loops for detail work and subdivision.
  • Place necessary edge loops to later extrude areas and add details.

Vertex Adjustment

  • Adjust vertices to follow the lines in the reference image.
  • Adjust for rounded corners and any non-rectangular shapes:
    • Select and move vertices to match the roundness.
    • Use the x-ray view to see reference details through the model.

Extruding Detailed Parts

  • Select faces and extrude to start defining complex parts.
  • Adjust the depth and width to match reference images.
  • Add edge loops where necessary for additional geometry.
  • Keep adjusting vertices for accurate alignment.

Creating Uniform Edges and Faces

  • Scale vertices to straighten lines.
  • Create continuous edge loops for smooth transitions in curvature.

Bridging Faces

  • Delete selected faces that interfere with detailing.
  • Use the Bridge tool to connect border edges cleanly.

Conclusion

  • Basic shape and foundational edges of the gun model created.
  • Further detail will be added in the next lesson.
  • Stop the lesson here due to length considerations and continue later with more detailing.
