Authority in Ancient Times

  • Kings in Ancient Times:
    • Many claimed to be gods.
    • Called themselves the "image of god" to assert authority.
    • Had the power to define good and evil.
    • Created statues of themselves, known in Hebrew as "tselem" (translated as "idol" or "image").

Israel's Unique Belief

  • Israelites did not view their kings as gods.
  • Prohibition Against Images:
    • Rooted in belief that God cannot be reduced to a creation.
    • God had already made images of Himself in humans.

Humans as the Image of God

How Humans Rule

  • Genesis Imagery:
    • Ruling is symbolized by gardening.
    • Humans cultivate the Earth, harness its potential, and create new things.
    • Includes growing families, creating communities, businesses, and cities.

The Human Condition

  • Choice of Rule:
    • Humans can use authority for the benefit of others (God's definition of good).
    • Alternatively, they can define good and evil for themselves, leading to selfishness and evil.
  • Biblical Narratives:
    • Humans often act selfishly and create injustice.
    • Yet, God provided resolution through Jesus.

Jesus as the New Human

  • Role of Jesus:
    • Ruled by serving others and seeking their best interest.
    • Confronted evil and took on its consequences through his death.
  • Resurrection:
    • Opened a new future for humanity.
    • Jesus is seen as the new way to be human.

Transformation through Jesus

  • Apostle Paul's Vision:
    • People can be filled with Jesus' presence and Spirit.
    • Manifestation includes love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, integrity, gentleness, and self-control.
  • Restoration of God's Image:
    • Goal is to restore God's image in humanity.
    • Leads to a renewed world with God on His throne and humans ruling with Jesus' guidance.
