How to Conduct a Platoon Attack for Army CST

Preparation

  • 360 Degree Security: Platoon sets up 360-degree security at an Objective Rally Point (ORP) or patrol base before the mission.
  • Reception of Mission: Once the mission is received from the company, the platoon leader (PL) issues a warning order (WARNO).
  • Terrain Model: PL, HQ members, and squad leaders build a terrain model.

Leader's Recon

  • Recon Team: PL conducts a recon bringing squad leaders, point man, and radio telephone operator.
  • Order of March: PL decides the order of movement.
  • Release Point: Set a checkpoint between the ORP and the objective.
  • 5-Point Contingency Plan (GOTWA): Details who’s going, the return plan, actions if attacked.

Execution

  • Recon Return: After the recon, squad leaders know their positioning.
  • Assembly at RP: Leadership radios PSG to bring everyone from the ORP to the release point (RP).
  • Movement Formation: Typically a platoon column fire team wedge, but varies by terrain and PL commands.

Pre-Attack Setup

  • RP Arrival: PL sets up assault elements and observes the team.
  • Security & Observation Team: Optional, but recommended for real-time updates.

Attack Execution

  • Element Placement: PL organizes the assault, weapon squads, and security squad.
  • Initiating Attack: Conducts attack by initiating fires or blowing a whistle.
  • Bounding Through Objective: Assault elements bound through, neutralize threats.
  • Support by Fire Team: Turns around and provides rear security post attack.
  • Security Element: Pulls security on the objective.

Post-Attack Operations

  • 360 Degree Security: Once attack is complete, spread out and maintain 360-degree security.
  • Special Teams: Handle Enemy Prisoner of War (EPW) and aid/litter tasks.
  • Situational Report: PL radios HQ with status update.
  • End of Mission: Cadre indicates change of mission or end.
