Chiller Plant Overview

Function of a Chiller Plant

  • Primary role: Remove heat from a closed room in a building.

Key Equipment in a Chiller Plant

  1. Chiller
  2. Cooling Tower
  3. Air Handling Unit (AHU)
  4. Condenser Water Pump
  5. Chilled Water Pump

Working Process of a Chiller Plant

  • Chilled Water Flow:

    • Chilled water from the evaporator of the chiller travels through the supply line to the AHU.
  • Heat Collection by AHU:

    • AHU collects heat from the room via the return duct.
    • The heat is transferred to the chilled water, which cools the air before it is released back into the room through the supply duct.
    • This process is continuous, with the AHU managing the system.
  • Heat Transport:

    • The heat collected by AHU is sent back to the evaporator through the chilled water return line.
    • Refrigerant in the evaporator absorbs heat from the chilled water, cooling it further.
  • Refrigerant Cycle:

    • The chilled water, now cooled, returns to the AHU to repeat the process.
    • The refrigerant carrying the collected heat moves to the condenser.
    • In the condenser, refrigerant releases heat to the condenser water.
    • The cooled refrigerant then returns to the evaporator via an expansion valve.
  • Role of the Expansion Valve:

    • The expansion valve enhances the cooling of the refrigerant before it re-enters the evaporator.
  • Cooling Tower Function:

    • The condenser water carries the heat from the refrigerant to the cooling tower.
    • Heat is expelled into the atmosphere through a fan in the cooling tower.
    • The cooled condenser water returns to the condenser to complete the cycle.

Conclusion

  • The chiller plant continuously cycles to remove heat from closed rooms and release it into the atmosphere.
