Big fish! Geez! What's going on guys? Welcome back to the channel. In the last episode I had such a good time surf fishing and I'm still pretty new to it I decided to go out and do it again.
But this time I grabbed the kayak and I wanted to find a spot where there was less people, less tourists. And so I just got in the kayak, floated out, found a little private spot where there was a lot less people. Well, this looks like as good a spot as any, I guess. Hi guys, this is the plan today.
We're going to do fish gum versus fish bites. So I'm down here in Tampa and a lot of the YouTubers I watch up in Pensacola and the Panhandle have been having really good luck with this. and I'm more familiar with this I know a lot of people are but this is kind of the newer player on the scene so what the what we're gonna do is we're gonna set out two poles one with fish gum and one with fish bites this is the yellow ochre color fish gum this is the sand flea flavor fish bites I was trying to get the orange to kind of match this, but they were sold out. So that might be a good sign. But we're just going to use the fish bites and the fish gum.
If we don't get any bites for a while, then I might tip it with some shrimp. Either way, one rod's going to have fish bites and one rod's going to have fish gum. I'm not really going for a number of species.
I'm just going to go for the number of fish. So whoever catches the most fish is going to win this challenge today. It's definitely a different texture than fish bites and it's got a stronger smell. It's not it's not a bad smell. It's not like it's not like stink bait or something like that.
Alright so I got that double hooked so it should stay on the hook a little bit better. Alright guys, the weather's terrible and the wind's terrible. We haven't got any bites yet, so I'm going to tip it with a piece of shrimp. I'm going to tip both of them and see if it'll get more scent or something in the water just to catch the fish's attention because the water's so crazy right now. Yeah, fish on.
I think. There we go. A catfish. So first fish of the day is a catfish, but that is one fish for the fish gums.
So, fish comes in the lead starting out. See you later dude. Fish on, fish on. Hi Matt, I came off.
No, he's still on. We got a Jack Crevel and this is perfect because I'm trying to get some shark bait right now. So that's one for fish bites and one for fish gut. Oh that's fish. I thought it was a fish.
Whoa! What the heck was that? Oh we do have a fish on! Oh nice whiting.
Alright I had something crazy hit this thing I don't know what happened. So there's a nice healthy stud whiting right there. So that's two for the fish bites and one for the fish gum so far.
I'm keeping this one. This is going to be really good. Big fish. Jeez. God, he almost fooled me.
Something big just took the fish gum. But it was on my smaller rod and reel so it just almost spooled me so I tried to hold it to not let it take all the line and it just broke right off. So I'm gonna take my shark rod and rig it up with the the fish gum that way if whatever is big out there takes it again we'll have a better chance.
All right guys I'll give you an update of what's going on. So the fish bites by themselves aren't getting any bites, but I've had two huge bites on the fish gum. And one of them was on my smaller pole, and it's just not meant for the surf, and it almost pulled it.
And I tried to stop it, and you saw that it just broke. So right now I just have my two heaviest setups just with fish gum. Because at the moment, that's what's getting bites by itself, and I'm out of shrimp.
I just had a little bit of leftover frozen shrimp from earlier. There we go. Fish on. There we go.
Oh no! Ah! That was a pompano.
God, I got too excited. That was on the fish gum and fish bites mixed together. Oh man.
I got too excited and tried jerking it in. Oh, that was stupid. Fish on.
That went slack. This might be a pompano too. And he's running down the beach like a pompano.
Whoa! That's definitely not a pompano. That's a remora. And that's, yeah, that's my first remora.
God, that one was a pompano though that came up, I saw it. Alright, we lost the fish that I wanted and caught a fish that I didn't want but this is a remora It's got the weird suction cup head. This is the fish that like sticks itself onto sharks and stuff like that Oh, man, that feels weird It won't stick to me right now.
It's too sandy. But yeah, let's get it back Hi guys, I'm heading back. I've got four fat whiting I'm going to fillet up and fry, so that'll be good.
So, I was trying to do more of a versus and count each fish, but it got to the point where we weren't getting any bites for a while, so I started adding shrimp, and then we started catching some fish. And then I realized... The fish bite by itself wasn't going to eat bites. Now I've got bites and I've caught fish on fish bites without any other bait.
But that's just how the way goes sometimes. And for some reason today they were wanting the fish to come bite. And then I put together a piece of fish gum and a piece of sand and flea fish bite together and we hooked up to that pompano and I lost it and that just drove me crazy. But we still got some whiting to eat. If I had to pick one or the other, I think I would just do both because with surf fishing, sometimes they want the sand flea fish bite, sometimes they want the shrimp fish bite, the clam fish bite, and sometimes they might just want fish gum.
The cool thing with the fish gum is there's different colors, but it's all the same flavor. It's like sand fleas and shrimp and crab and clams all mixed together. So you don't have to worry about the color.
about you just pick out a different color and try that and then with fish bites you know you might only have one of those that day you don't know which one's working and so fish gum you got a little bit of everything i think i like them both fish bites last longer on the hook and fish gum dissolves faster but it's like also thicker and gooier, so I think it puts a bunch of scent out in the water. for whatever reason today the fish gun was working the best i caught i actually caught five good whiting and i kid you not i put it in the cooler it jumped out of the cooler right as the wave was coming up it just jumped perfectly into the wave and then sped off it was ridiculous but uh well yeah guys let me know in the comments if you've used fish gun before or fish bites or which one's your favorite uh like i said i think it's just another tool to kind of add to the arsenal And just kind of use both and see what's working that day. I'm not sure I'm going to pick one or both for the other.
I'm in Tampa, so I haven't found a bait shop that carries it yet, so I had to order it online. But I'll definitely order some more. I'll try some different colors.
