Exploring the Concept of Identity

This is you. You are not him nor her. You are different from him and her and them. You have your own name, date of birth, and parents which are all different from other people. It is an identity. You have just arrived to the campus, and are meeting people with different identities. Sometimes, you are curious, comparing the people you meet to each other, and then grouping them. Why do you do that? You see a small group, always going everywhere together. they have actually been friends since high school. So you group them based on their previous school. But, some people have no school mates, they hang out with people who are from the same hometown with them. so you treat them based on their homelands or ethnicity. Later on, all the new university students gather based on their choice of faculty. you start to group with your faculty mates and now you all have another identity, that of a student in your faculty. We are born with some identities, such as ethnicity, religions, skin color, and those that are added through our own or other people’s choices, so that we have various identities. Which ones matter most will differ from person to person. Some people are so proud of their identities, that they think they can pass judgement on others. There are also those who are too insecure and they feel the need to overprotect their identities, sometimes in an extreme way. Different identities are natural, but we need to have the right perspective about it. Look at this carefully, we may have some identities which are different, but we may also have some which are the same. When we group people, we actually look for those with similar identities. Finally, we should understand that being different is a human right, but we will also find that everyone has one shared identity : God’s humans.
