I have two S24 Ultras. This one on the official 1 UI7 update that just landed today and this one running 1 UI 6.1. It's time to see if the cameras have finally been improved. Let's go. 1 UI7 is officially here. After months of beta testing, the final version has just been released. But how have the cameras improved? What features have been added? All of that is going to be answered right now. Starting first with the UI of the camera, Samsung have gone back to their One UI roots and made the camera much easier to use one-handed. Menus and settings and toggles have all been put down the bottom with everything kind of becoming much easier to reach one-handed, including the the modes that now sit underneath the shutter button and also the more tab, which has brought everything down into the bottom third of the screen. They've also added to every camera mode this four dot menu. When you press that, all the stuff that used to be up the top is now down the bottom within a really easy reach using just one hand. Resolution toggles, motion photo, exposure sliders, which I'll get to in a moment, all now much easier to reach with one hand cuz they are down the bottom in that four dot menu. That new exposure slider that I mentioned is also there across every single camera mode. What's really neat about it, too, is not only does it change the exposure of the entire image, it saves it. So when you leave the camera mode and then come back, you can actually keep that exposure that you've set permanent. And then even if you tap on the screen to adjust the exposure slider, it doesn't change the overall exposure that you've set. It also puts it up in the top right corner to let you know that you've adjusted it. The other thing that sort of changed regarding the UI is how it looks on the screen. So before with 1 UI 6.1 in other camera modes that weren't photo mode, you just had this line. Whereas with 1 UI7, it's kind of giving you this line with other little lines above it and then a circle. It's really helping guide the best most level version of the image or video that you can get. But then the main shot suggestions guide has also changed. Whereas before you had a big circle that you used to have to then line up with a little circle, you now have an X with a big circle around it that you need to kind of line up to get the composed photo that you want or that they're suggesting. It's not like it's better. That's just different. Alongside those UI changes is the functionality of the cameras. The S24 Ultra being near as powerful as the S25 Ultra from a hardware standpoint can adopt some of the S25 series's camera features. The main one, and well, I would say pretty much the only one is log video recording. In advanced video options, when you have HEVC toggled on, you can now add log video as one of your recording options. I've already waxed lyrical about this on the S25 series and how much I love using it. It's such a powerful tool in terms of how it strips back color, but it retains dynamic range. When you've enabled it in advanced video options, you see it become a toggle in the top right corner of your video mode. Like I said, it retains the dynamic range but preserves it in a flat color profile. So then you have the option to go in later and correct the color yourself. You can either do that in programs like Premiere Pro or Samsung give you a handy color correction toggle inside the gallery when you swipe up on the video. You can see the difference here. You've got S24 Ultra and 1 UI 6.1 recording normal 4K 30 versus log. You can see how much flatter the profile is, but then when you correct the color, it kind of brings it back to life. and I just prefer that style, especially how you can control it a bit more yourself. What I didn't see that's new on the S25 series is the updated single take. Samsung haven't brought that pre-record option to the S24 series when the final version of 1 UI7. But functionally, that biggest change is absolutely log video. Now, it's time to test the output. This was an important thing for me because I think last year with the S24 Ultra, people weren't quite happy with the processing. So, a lot of people are expecting Samsung to make improvements here. Let's take a look. Straight away, the first thing I noticed with the first photo I took side by side is that Samsung have cooled down the tones where on the S24 Ultra from the 1 UI 6.1 had warmer tones, especially in that building. And this is the ultra wide camera. You can see 1 UI7 has cooled it down and probably reflected it more true to life like what it was. This is pretty much as you go through the zoom 0.6 one times and sort of as you keep going. You can kind of see that the whole way through, but it's especially prevalent in the 1x camera with the photos that I took. It also seems as if Samsung has gained some better control of highlights with 1 UI 72. There's this photo here that I took with the rocks in the foreground and in the bottom left corner of the rocks, you can see 1 UI 6.1 has kind of overexposed it and blown it out a little bit. Whereas 1 UI7 has kind of retained the detail and the color to make it look a lot more natural. It's the same as this photo of the tree where you can see the grass in the foreground. It has a bit of a different sort of overexposed tone on 1 UI 6.1 whereas 1 UI7 again controls the grass a lot better particularly in that foreground area. As far as zoom goes, I'm not a big fan of comparing 30 time zoom versus 30 time zoom. I'm doubt people are really using this the same way they would at onetime zoom. So comparing that detail, not really important to me. But the only thing I did notice was that color balance with it being slightly cooler versus warmer from the previous version of the software. I took a photo of myself with the rear camera not on portrait mode using the one times camera and the facial tone difference is actually quite staggering. When you look at the two photos, the photo from the 1 UI 6.1 is so different and I much prefer the processing that Samsung have implemented here on 1 UI7. Also, my shirt and excuse the cinnamon crumbs from my donut that I had earlier in the day. You can see the blackness of my shirt versus it being almost gray on 1 UI 6.1. When I shifted to portrait mode, you can see a difference as well. My face is less red on 1 UI 7.0 compared to 6.1. and it there was no need for it to be red. It almost like it was picking up the red from whatever was in the background and sort of melding it onto my face. Whereas when you 7 didn't do that. When I move on to video, those exact same changes that I noticed from before are here as well. Even more so in video. If you're looking at the buildings behind the bridge, again, you can see that it's slightly cooler, less warm on 1 UI 7 versus 1 UI 6.1. If you didn't have the newer software to compare, you might not notice it. But seeing as how I do have it, it's very obvious. But I want to draw your attention to the grass. I think this is where I've noticed the biggest change from video is on 1 UI 6.1. Again, it's kind of clipped the highlights a little bit and made it a bit overblown with the grass. Whereas on 1 UI 7, it's really preserved that grass's green nature. Especially as we've had a lot of rain here on the Gold Coast, the grasses are green now. And you can absolutely see that green in 1 UI 7 where it doesn't really come through or translate properly with 1 UI 6.1. I also checked expert raw but I did not notice any difference. In fact, there wasn't any. Expert RAW has not picked up any new features with 1UI 7 as of now. So bottom line, has it improved? Yes. Not only do you get the refreshed user interface, not only do you add log video, but you also get much better processing, much more refined processing, which we've seen from Samsung before. Seems to be something that they do to refine their software and their processing of their camera as time goes on and as updates roll out. It's obviously been a while for 1 UI7, so it's nice to see that you'll be getting a better experience from the camera on the whole. It almost makes it feel like a brand new phone. And maybe that's my next video. So, hit subscribe for that. Make sure you go find me on all my socials. And I'll see you guys in the next one. You
