Managing Your Email: Tips and Techniques

(upbeat hip-hop music) I find that most of us have this love-hate relationship with our email, right? We, in some ways, are kind of addicted to looking to see if we got new emails, but we hate it, because we feel like we can never get on top of it. It's overwhelming. One of the tips that I'm going to suggest you start with right now is understanding this idea. You know, categorizing your email into different folders is not necessarily the same thing as clarifying and processing your email. Let me explain. Most people read an email, maybe only partially, and then they drop that email in some folder. Maybe it's topic-based or by client. And then what ends up happening is, they either end up having to go back and reread that email again, waste of time, or they end up having so many of those subcategories and folders, they lose it, and then that action that needed to be done, because the email, shows up when things blow up, when things go wrong. So instead, when you read an email, read it through and ask yourself, what does this mean to me? And what do I need to do about it? Rather than just moving emails around that make you feel semi-good about getting to zero, actually read and make decisions, and then getting to zero will actually feel the way it should feel.
