Lecture Notes: Packing Toiletries for Carry-On Travel

Introduction

  • Tips for packing toiletries in carry-on without or with minimal liquids
  • Five different toiletry bags and packing system demonstrated

TSA Regulations

  • Allowed: one quart-sized bag of liquids, aerosols, gels, creams, pastes
  • Travel size containers: 3.4 oz / 100 ml or less

Minimizing Liquids

1. Toothpaste Tablets

  • Chew until foamy, brush as normal
  • Travel-sized tin lasts ~2 weeks

2. Facial Wipes (Water-Activated)

  • No need for liquid face wash/makeup remover
  • Won’t dry out, reusable as washcloth
  • Recommended: Olay daily facials

3. Soap

  • Travel with personal soap bars; cut into pieces for short trips
  • Hotel-provided soap as an alternative

4. Deodorant

  • Use solid deodorant (recommendation: travel-sized crystal deodorant)

5. Shampoo & Conditioner

  • Use shampoo bars (especially for color-treated hair)
  • Hotel shampoo might not be sufficient (combined shampoo & conditioner trend)
  • Liquid conditioner or conditioner bar recommended
  • Use liquid pouches instead of bottles for space-saving

6. Lotion

  • Use lotion sticks (frequently approved at airport security)

7. Face Moisturizer & More

  • Use travel silicone containers
  • Other uses: creams, hair products, coconut oil, vitamins/supplements

8. Sunscreen

  • Use sunscreen sticks

Packing System

  • Quart-sized bag for liquids (e.g., micellar water, contact lens solution, makeup items, face cream, moisturizer, hair products, liquid sunscreen)
  • Declare medically necessary liquids at security
  • Use toiletry skins for leak-proofing

Toiletry Bags

1. Slim Toiletry Bag

  • Fits underseat or top of carry-on
  • Separate kits for liquids and solids
  • Extra features: toothbrush & razor slots, mesh pockets

2. Convertible Bag

  • Two compartments: main and bottom for dry products
  • Can double for cords/chargers

3. Upright Compact Bag

  • Keeps items upright, multiple mesh pockets, can hang

4. Large Organized Bag

  • Four compartments, accessible zippers, good for family trips
  • Some travelers keep it face-up during security for easy visibility

5. Basic Toiletry Bag

  • Classic design, good for ultra-light travel
