Lecture on Using Scale Number 14

Purpose

  • Demonstrate how to use Scale Number 14.
  • Measure and record the weight of an ambulatory client.

Scale Setup and Operation

Zeroing the Scale

  • Ensure both weights are set to zero.
    • Bottom Bar: increments of 50 pounds.
    • Top Bar: increments of 1 pound.
  • Scale should center between the square on the side when zeroed.

Measuring Weight

  • Start from 0 and increment by 50 pounds using the bottom bar.
  • Adjust using top bar by increments of 1 pound until the scale is even again.
  • Example calculation: Bottom at 50 pounds and top at 15 pounds equals 65 pounds total.

Procedure for Weight Measurement

Step 1: Explain the Procedure

  • Speak clearly, slowly, and directly.
  • Maintain face-to-face contact when possible.

Step 2: Prepare the Client

  • Ensure the client is wearing non-skid footwear before walking to the scale.

Step 3: Zero the Scale

  • Confirm the scale is set to zero before the client steps on it.

Step 4: Assist the Client

  • Help the client step onto the center of the scale.
  • Obtain the client’s weight using the described method.

Step 5: Client Steps Off

  • Guide the client off the scale safely.

Step 6: Hygiene Protocol

  • Wash hands before recording the weight.

Step 7: Record Weight

  • Record the weight based on the indicator.
  • Ensure the recorded weight is within plus or minus one pound of the instructor’s reading.
  • Include "LBS" (pounds) as a unit of measure.

Additional Notes

  • Ensure the bed is in the low and locked position.
  • The client’s call bell should be within reach.
  • Maintain privacy by pulling the curtain.
  • Always confirm the client's comfort and safety during the procedure.
