this is a continuation for test two I want to talk a little bit about social deviance so deviance is a term that most of us are familiar with devious can mean lots of different things lots in folks but generally it's deviating from the norms of society so we have all these norms rules laws mores and when we deviate from those we could be viewed as sort of socially deviant talk about deviance that sort of has a couple of sort of ideas about deviance one is individual deviance so a person makes an individual sort of responsible decision to do something that violates the norms of society and we view that as individual blame in other words you have to take responsibility for your choice of behavior then we have systemic blame systemic blame is where we blame the system for an outcome of a larger group of people for example of social gangs maybe they're that way because society didn't offer them enough with education or resources and outcomes the third is differential association that would be deviance this is a term by edwin sutherland sutherland believed that we're sort of have different parts of our personality and those parts of our personalities are influenced by others and so these differential people that we run with sometimes they're good sometimes they're bad and so the same person could make bad decisions and good decisions based upon the peer group that they're running with and then of course we have culture of poverty so the idea of cultural poverty means usually deviance is more likely to happen in terms of things that we see more more like blue-collar deviance with crime and drugs and gun violence and street crime and burglary and robbery it's not to say that other kinds of things happen with wealthier groups of people such as money laundering and embezzlement and those sorts of things but cultural poverty basically says nothing good really happens with really poor places better worse health outcomes shorter life expectancy more risk of high blood pressure and heart disease those sorts of things labeling Theory basically says once a person has been sort of labeled as deviant that sort of - shake that label so if you've been arrested charged with a felony if you've been acting out in school and that sort of follows you through your school career it's harder to shape or change a negative label and we know what primary deviance is primary deviance is sort of the initial act of deviance it's sort of that first time you do something when you're looking at primary deviance you tend to maybe escalate it or not secondary deviance is where we in fact do escalate it so secondary Davids someone who gets away with something during primary deviance and rather than saying oh my god I'm so lucky I didn't get pulled over after that event is callate it my burglar rides more houses or I speed more often or I drink and drive more often and the tertiary deviance is deviance where someone sort of identifies themselves as deviant all their peer groups knows that their deviant their families know that their deviant they know that their deviant sometimes they even define themselves as deviant I'm a bad MF for whatever right we see that sometimes on with people talking about themselves with their incarceration rate so the number of times they've been arrested and so we sort of know who not to invite to our to our house for a party there are different other types of deviance we mentioned white-collar crime you know we call it white-collar crime because it's usually people that have higher social standing but we see you long money laundering embezzlement bank fraud we see insider trading those sorts of things we see juvenile crimes juvenile crimes happen with individuals under the age of 18 the most common juvenile crimes are status offense the status offenses are we don't know where you are what you're doing so skipping school or sneaking out of your house would be a status finn's and then law enforcement gets involved and everybody sort of in a turmoil other juvenile offense that's very common is shoplifting petty theft stealing cigarettes stealing jewelry cologne things like that we have a whole bucket of adult crimes which is usually part of Criminology adult crimes could be misdemeanors or some misdemeanors are sort of minor infractions of law they're usually you know they're often referred to as 1129 offenses which means the harshest punishment you can receive for a misdemeanor violation is sort of 11 months 29 days incarceration in the county or she's in jail but it can be a whole period of things under misdemeanor violations it could be house arrest community service restitution those kinds of things fine felonies are serious infractions and so serious infractions usually are served in a federal or state penitentiary usually they're sort of much harsher punishments for felony convictions usually they're interesting as a murder rape assault robbery burglary those sorts of things but not always you know related to that most people that do have a felony conviction have a very high recidivism rate chances of reoffending drug crimes are often controversial you know prisons are full of people that twenty five years ago had a very small amount of let's say marijuana but there were sentenced harshly and now with decriminalization those issues have come up we have crimes against the government you know people that you know falsify data falsify affidavits steal money from the government you know take a check for somebody that's been dead for ten years Social Security check other categories of deviance we have a whole bucket a big old bucket of sexual crimes or sexual deviance anything from a fetish or a behavior or something that's exciting to you or an activity that would be that would be sexually titillating and and if you look at the diagnostic Statistical Manual mental health the sectional and sexual perversions and deviance is pretty large so you can sort of make up your own minds about that and then we have a lot of things about technology now cyberbullying identity theft those kinds of things have become part of a deviant culture in our world and then we also have a body image deviance where we perceive tattooing body art piercings you know things such as that may be perceived by a certain population as being deviants
