Conjugation of Spanish IR and ER Verbs

Welcome back, guys. Right now, we're going to be reviewing verbs that end in IR and ER. Remember that in Spanish, we have three classes of verbs. The first class that we learned a couple weeks ago were verbs ending in AR. So it's going to be a verb like hablar. Hablar means to talk. So when you want to say I talk, you take off the AR and you put in the right personal ending. So for yo, yo hablo. I talk. Tú hablas. You talk. Él habla. He talks. Ella habla. She talks. Nosotros hablamos. Ellos hablan. So for AR verbs, our endings were O, AS, A, AMOS, AN. For IR and ER verbs, however, our ending is going to be a little bit different. So here we have a few examples of verbs ending in ER. Aprender, to learn. Comer, to eat. So this is a big one. Make sure you know comer. Beber, to drink. to understand, correr, to run, and leer, to read. Let's learn how to conjugate these verbs. So first, we have a verb like deber, which means to should, to must, to ought to. So to conjugate deber, the first thing we do, we always take off that er ending, and then we add on the personal endings. So the personal endings for er verbs are yo debo, tú debes, él debe. Nosotros debemos. Ellos deben. Ellas deben. Ustedes deben. So, o, es, e, hemos, en. Here we have some IR verbs. Abrir, escribir. Abrir, open. Abrir. Escribir, to write. Decidir, to decide. Compartir, to share. Vivir, to live. Recibir, to receive. How do we conjugate IR verbs? Same way. Take off the IR. Most of the things are going to be the same. Yo asisto, tú asistes, él asiste. It's different in the nosotros. Asistimos. Ellos asisten. O, es, e, imos, and. So, looking at the two side by side, almost the same. O, es, e. It's different in nosotros. For ER, hemos, comemos, we eat, comemos. And for IR, imos, like we live, vivimos. And then N for both. Okay, I want you guys to pause the video and in your notes, just conjugate out these two verbs looking at the subject pronouns that they're giving you. Or nouns, because not all these are pronouns. But pause the video, write those out, and we'll be right back together. All right, let's go through these. Tú corres, yo corro, Sarayana corren. So anytime you're talking to a group or about a group, the ending's always an N and N. So that's true of AR, ER, IR. It'll always have that N when you're talking to a group or about a group. Usted corre, ustedes corren. So talking to a group, corren. La gente corre, la gente. Spanish for the people. The people, la gente. Just like in English, we treat it singular. So the people, I guess in English we treat it plural. In Spanish we treat it singular. La gente va. La gente corre. Marcos y yo corremos. We run. Carolina abre. Yo abro. Nosotras abrimos los libros. Usted abre el cuaderno. Tú abres la ventana. Ustedes abren. las maletas los muchachos abren los cuadernos a little bit of review on what these words mean puerta door maleta suitcase uh ventanas windows open the windows nosotras abrimos los libros the books el cuaderno the notebook uh sweet all right so here i want you guys to do the same thing just read through the sense and try to determine what form The verb in parentheses should take based on the subject pronoun you see right before it or from context. Sometimes they don't state the subject pronoun. Because I have enough time. All right, let's go through these. José, mi compañero de cuarto, y yo. So that's José y yo. That's nosotros. uh vivimos man i thought i had these written in uh b b mos in un apartamento as an ass kind of uh nosotros asistimos a la una una giant university in mexico city uh they have so what it's called is they have the university city in a portion of mexico city remember mexico city largest city in North America. The UNAM, largest university in North America. And it's one of the largest universities in the world. Hundreds of thousands of people go to this university. Todos los días, él recibe mensajes de su familia. Él escribe sus tareas por la noche. A veces yo leo. I read. Yo Leo los mensajes de ellos. Mensajes, messages. Their messages. Sus abuelos creen. So there's two E's, we pronounce both E's. Creen. Creen. Que el teléfono es para hablar. Ellos no mandan mensajes de texto. Okay. And the last activity. Here, we're on page 71 in your textbook. Here are some more IR verbs off to the side. What you need to do is decide which IR verb to place in each one of these blanks. If you want to pause the video, read through it, try your best. This is a hard skill to acquire, but try to make the most sense possible. All right, let's go through this. Hola, soy estudiante de la UNAM, donde estudio para ser intérprete. Mucho de la cultura y la lengua. So if I'm starting to be an interpreter, I'm probably learning a bunch about the culture. So aprendo. And it's yo because they're still talking about themselves. So here where it said soy, that's yo. Yo soy. So there's no need to change that. Spanish doesn't need to keep saying yo. It actually never needs to say yo. It's clear from context they're talking about themselves. So yo aprendo mucho de la cultura y la lengua de los estudiantes en mis clases. Yo asisto, I attend classes. Yo asisto a clases con mi amigo Juan. Él es mi compañero en la clase de inglés. Juan y yo estudiamos, nice AR verb, en la cafetería. Donde tambien bebo. Is it bebo? So if he's just talking about himself, I don't know if he just switched to himself. It didn't. It's not clear. Probably should be bebemos where we drink coffee. Bebemos cafe y comemos sandwiches. And I'm using the nosotros just because he used it here. And so I'm assuming that he and Juan do this together. Donde también bebemos café y comemos sándwiches. Sándwiches just means sandwiches. Here, I want you guys in your notes, just to write out sentences. You can combine any element from this column with any element in this column with any element in this column to create your own sentences. Take a few moments to do that. All right. Hopefully you guys did that. Hopefully you wrote out a few sentences. Remember, all you're doing is conjugating the verb to the subject pronoun. So tú y tus amigos, that would be ustedes. So tú y tus amigos lean una novela en la residencia. If I was just going straight across, you guys didn't have to go straight across. All right. What do you guys absolutely need to learn from this? You got to start learning some of these verbs. This is how we communicate. We conjugate verbs. So yo abro la ventana. I open the window. Yo bebo café. Yo creo en Dios. Yo escribo novelas. Yo leo libros. Yo recibo mensajes. This is how you form an idea. We normally call ideas sentences. So you form a sentence with a subject and a conjugated verb. So I would take a screenshot of these verbs at the bare minimum. You must know these verbs just to be able to begin saying stuff about different locations. All right. All right. So remember to go back through, study the verb endings. If you're not clear on your AR verbs, go back, look back at your AR verbs. And now we've added present tense of ER verbs and IR verbs. You guys have any questions? Please don't hesitate to send me an email.
