Hand Washing Procedure

Importance of Hand Washing

  • Crucial for good hygiene
  • Prevents cross-contamination
  • Essential in cleaning roles, especially in kitchens

Surfaces and Germs

  • Daily contact with pots, pans, surfaces, plates, clothes, and handles
  • Surfaces likely covered with bacteria or invisible germs
  • Germs can transfer from your hands to other objects

Steps for Perfectly Clean Hands

  1. Wet Hands

    • Use clean running water (above 45°C)
    • Wet hands, wrists, and forearms
    • Apply soap
  2. Create Lather

    • Rub hands together to create a lather
  3. Rub Hands Thoroughly

    • Continue rubbing for at least 20 seconds
    • Focus on creases in wrists, palms, fingers, and between fingers
  4. Clean Nails and Cuticles

    • Use a nail brush if available
    • Avoid hurting fingers to prevent open wounds
    • Keep nails short
  5. Rinse Hands

    • Use warm running water
    • Avoid touching taps (prefer sensor-operated taps)
  6. Dry Hands

    • Use a clean disposable paper towel
    • Dispose of the towel in a pedal-operated bin
  7. Sanitize Hands

    • Use antibacterial food-safe hand sanitizer
    • Allow to air dry
    • Throw away paper towel before sanitizing

  • Only use for washing hands
  • Do not wash/rinse other items to avoid contamination

When to Wash Hands

  • Between Different Tasks: Frequently and as needed
  • After Certain Activities:
    • Using the toilet
    • Putting on/changing a dressing
