throughout your reading of chapter one you will learn about the interest in the discipline of kinesiology and how much the interest of students majoring in kinesiology has grown in 2003 to 2008 the number of undergraduates majoring in kinesiology has increased by 50% it's one of the fastest growing majors in higher education in many four-year institutions across the nation kinesiology is often one of the largest departments within the college this growth or this quick growth in the field is due to the term and the change of the term as mentioned previously in the first video this field used to be called physical education this was very limiting really only offering curriculum and education courses that were to help others learn or to prepare students for the field of pedagogy to become a physical educator with the change of the term to kinesiology it has offered a much more broad perspective on the field allowing for so many more career options for students who study human movement or human physical activity kinesiology majors range from students who want to become physical therapists athletic trainers strength and conditioning coaches athletic Coaches sports management physical educators occupational therapists etc so you can see there's a wide variety now of career options all that use the study of human movement and the study of human physical activity for their specific area of concentration because there are so many different areas of concentration kinesiology has many options this has helped to grow the field within the last two decades
