Overview
This lecture covers the structure, expectations, safety policies, and key concepts related to joining fraternities and sororities at San Diego State University (SDSU).
Greek Life Process & Requirements
- Three required modules: Greek 101 (overview/registration), Greek 102 (detailed info), and Greek 103 (new member education).
- Only enrolled SDSU students in good academic and disciplinary standing are eligible to join.
- A minimum 2.0 SDSU GPA is required for continuing students; new students are exempt their first semester.
- Students must not have previously joined a social fraternity or sorority.
Core Values & Membership Expectations
- Five core values: Integrity, Social Responsibility, Leadership, Scholarship, and Unity.
- Members must act responsibly, follow university/organization policies, and respect others’ dignity and diversity.
- Hazing, discrimination, and substance abuse are strictly prohibited.
- Members are expected to participate in chapter functions, pay dues, and support community welfare.
Structure & Councils
- All fraternities/sororities must affiliate with one of four Councils: USFC (multicultural), NPHC (historically Black), IFC (men’s social), and CPA (women’s Panhellenic).
- Councils have executive boards, set community standards, and govern chapter activities.
- Dual membership in non-social Greek organizations is allowed; membership in more than one social fraternity is not.
Alcohol, Drugs, & Safety
- Fraternities/sororities must comply with dry periods, dry joining processes, and no alcohol at philanthropy/new member events.
- Kegs, open bars, drinking games, and providing alcohol to minors are not allowed at any event.
- Combining alcohol with drugs—especially opioids or stimulants—can be fatal.
- Members must know signs of alcohol poisoning and seek emergency help; Medical Amnesty protects those who do so.
Hazing & Sexual Violence Prevention
- Hazing is any activity causing harm, discomfort, stress, or humiliation, and is banned regardless of consent.
- All incidents of hazing must be reported; bystanders can be held responsible.
- Programs like FratMANers and SISSTER provide peer education on sexual violence prevention.
- Affirmative consent is required for all sexual activity; incapacitated individuals cannot consent.
Reporting & Conduct
- Violations can lead to organizational or individual sanctions, including suspension or expulsion.
- Multiple reporting mechanisms exist for incidents or concerns (university, police, Title IX, etc.).
