Key Concepts

Subject, Object, and Verb

  • Example: "Rubina is eating a pizza."
    • Subject: Rubina (the doer of the action)
    • Verb: eating (the action performed)
    • Object: pizza (the receiver of the action)
  • To identify an object, ask what or whom questions.

Transitive Verbs

  • Definition: Action verbs that have a direct object receiving the action.
  • Characteristics: Action verb + Direct Object.

Examples of Transitive Verbs:

  1. Sentence: "The man loves his children."
    • Action: loves (verb)
    • Direct Object: children
  2. Sentence: "The doctor cured him."
    • Action: cured
    • Direct Object: him
  3. Sentence: "She crossed the street."
    • Action: crossed
    • Direct Object: street
  4. Sentence: "Rohan kicked the ball."
    • Action: kicked
    • Direct Object: ball

Intransitive Verbs

  • Definition: Action verbs that do not have a direct object receiving the action.
  • Characteristics: Action verb without a direct object.

Examples of Intransitive Verbs:

  1. Sentence: "Snow fell yesterday."
    • Action: fell
    • No Direct Object: Cannot specify what the snow fell on.
  2. Sentence: "We failed."
    • Action: failed
    • No Direct Object: No object present.
  3. Sentence: "She is sleeping."
    • Action: is sleeping
    • No Direct Object: No object present.
  4. Sentence: "She works hard."
    • Action: works
    • No Direct Object: No object present.
