Sep 1, 2025

Overview

This lecture discusses the factors leading to the fall of the Tang dynasty in China, focusing on political missteps, major rebellions, and the rise of regional warlords, which set the stage for subsequent periods of chaos.

Tang Dynasty's Golden Age and Decline

  • The Tang dynasty began as a golden age marked by economic prosperity, cultural growth, and military strength.
  • Its decline was triggered by the An Lushan Rebellion in 755, which devastated the empire.
  • The rebellion resulted in millions dead and a significant population decline.

The An Lushan Rebellion and Its Aftermath

  • Main cause: excessive power given to military governors (jiedushi) and court political infighting.
  • To end the rebellion, the emperor granted regional autonomy to rebel leaders, weakening central control.
  • Autonomous regions became de facto kingdoms under the empire’s nominal authority.

Rise of Eunuch Power and Internal Strife

  • Later emperors, especially Xianzong, tried to curb military governors' power by empowering palace eunuchs.
  • Eunuchs became kingmakers, selecting emperors based on their own interests, not merit.
  • Efforts to counter eunuch influence, like the Sweet Dew Incident in 835, failed and further empowered them.

Subsequent Rebellions and Final Collapse

  • Peasant unrest due to natural disasters and corrupt officials led to Wang Xianzhi and then Huang Chao’s rebellion (874–884).
  • Rebel leaders were sometimes offered official posts if they surrendered, reflecting imperial weakness.
  • Huang Chao's forces captured the capital and massacred many, further destabilizing the region.
  • Military governors refused to cooperate, each seeking to protect or expand their own territories.

Emergence of Warlords and Division

  • Key figures like Zhu Wen and Li Keyong rose during the suppression of Huang Chao’s rebellion.
  • Zhu Wen eventually controlled the emperor, leading to the emperor's assassination and forced abdication in 907.
  • The Tang dynasty ended, initiating the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period.
