hi I'm Juan with the Home Depot here today to show you how to read a micrometer micrometers take small precise measurements that will be too difficult to read by sight this is an outside micrometer which measures the external surface of an object you take a measurement by placing an object between the Anvil and the ratchet and then adding together the numbers on the sleeve and the thimble to demonstrate the tool I'll measure this simple gauge block press the object against the Anvil and tighten the device to hold the object in place read the sleeve first the whole numbers represent 1/10 of an inch or 0.10 the shorter quarter marks between those represent 125,000 of an inch or 0.025 Our Sleeve is showing the hole number three and two of the quarter marks which give us 0.35 or 3 and 1/2 t0 of an inch then re the thimble the longer marks on the thimble represent 1,000 of an inch or 0.001 and the shorter marks represent half on 1,000 of an inch or 0.005 Our Sleeve is landing at the first shorter Mark after zero so that gives us 0.00005 if the reading line lands between two numbers and the symol always use the smaller number then you'll combine the numbers from the sleeve and the thimble to calculate the complete measurement so we'll add together 0.3 plus 0.05 Plus 0.00005 for a total measurement of 0.355 thanks for joining me on the Home Depot for more how to content specifically created for pros like us go to Hom depot.com slpro dges
