10 Tricks for Answering RC Questions

Trick 1: Cause and Effect

  • Incorrect cause and effect relations should be avoided.
  • Example: Thinking the Declaration of Independence exists because Jefferson signed it.

Trick 2: Comparison

  • Avoid comparisons not supported by the text.
  • Example: Saying John Adams isn’t as persuasive as Jefferson when only Jefferson’s persuasiveness is mentioned.

Trick 3: Extreme Words

  • Look out for extreme words like "most" which may make an option incorrect.
  • Example: "Most defiant document" when only "defiant document" is mentioned.

Trick 4: Unknown

  • Avoid options containing information not mentioned in the passage.
  • Example: Assuming all signatories were present in one place when signing.

Trick 5: Traps

  • Watch out for options that mostly are correct but have one incorrect word.
  • Example: Adding "weak" to "13 colonies...".

Trick 6: Doesn’t Answer

  • Correct information doesn’t always answer the question.
  • Example: Saying who signed the Declaration without explaining why it was declared.

Trick 7: Numbers

  • Be cautious with numerical data and percentages.
  • Example: Misleading percentages of signatories.

Trick 8: Tone

  • Correct meaning but incorrect tone can render an answer wrong.
  • Example: Tone change in describing colonial rule.

Trick 9: Irrelevant Information

  • Avoid correct but irrelevant information as an answer.
  • Example: Mentioning the weather on the day of signing.

Trick 10: Replica

  • Options that almost match the passage but change one small word.
  • Example: Changing "but" to "and".
